C2 – My daily routine

C2 – My daily routine
This unit, which is to be used in April, sensitizes young learners to the use of
vocabulary and expressions related to a child’s daily routine. Pupils are introduced
to various greetings for the different parts of a day (in the morning with their family
or at school, in the afternoon and in the evening with their family) and describe their
everyday activities with the teacher’s help. They are also exposed to the written form
of greetings (good morning/ goodbye/ good night) and trace the relevant words.
Based on the daily routine of a small bear called Mary, pupils are introduced to new
vocabulary and expressions describing everyday activities and become familiar with
the narration of a story through the use of pictures. They are trained to listen to the
narration carefully and are encouraged to use recurrent patterns in the story so as to
follow its plot. They have already been exposed to the days of the week, as well as to
expressions referring to various daily activities they share with their family. Using
prior knowledge from the Maths lesson, they are introduced to telling the time in
certain communicative contexts in English. Also, they become sensitized to the letter
Oo and its sound and they sing a relevant song. They can easily follow this
sensitization process as they have already become familiar with that in previous units,
where other letters of the alphabet have been presented. This is the second unit of
Cycle C and the following units are also related to the concept of time, as months and
seasons are presented, while familiar vocabulary related to everyday activities is
recycled.

Suggested time: 2 teaching hours
Suggested procedure
Step 1: The teacher begins the lesson holding the mascot and telling pupils that Mary
wants to talk to them about her daily routine. The teacher sets a clock to 7.00 and
says: ‘I wake up at 7 o’clock in the morning’. Then, s/he sticks the relevant picture on
the board using blu tack (B_Γ02_C01). S/he sets the clock to 8.00 and says: ‘I go to
school at 8 o’clock in the morning’. Then, s/he sticks the relevant picture next to the
previous one (B_Γ02_C02). S/he continues the procedure changing the time on the
clock, sticking the pictures on the board and saying: ‘I do Μaths at school at 10
o’clock in the morning’ (B_Γ02_C03), ‘I go back home at 2 o’clock in the afternoon’
(B_Γ02_C04), ‘I have lunch at 3 o’ clock in the afternoon’ (B_Γ02_C05), ‘I do my
homework at 4 o’clock in the afternoon’ (B_Γ02_C06), ‘I play with my friends in the
garden at 6 o’clock in the afternoon’ (B_Γ02_C07), ‘I have a shower at 8 o’clock in
the evening’ (B_Γ02_C08), ‘I go to bed at 9 o’clock at night’ (B_Γ02_C09).

Step 2: Now the mascot wants to see if pupils can remember her daily routine and
asks them questions pointing at the relevant card: ‘I do Μaths at school. What’s the
time?’ ‘I have lunch. What’s the time?’, etc.
Step 3: The teacher takes the pictures off the board and gives learners this worksheet
(Β_Γ02_W01). S/he asks them to remember the mascot’s daily routine, put the
pictures given in the correct order and number them. When they have finished, s/he
asks them to swap their worksheets with the pupil sitting next to them and check each
other’s answers. The teacher repeats the mascot’s activities to facilitate the checking
process and finally encourages learners to colour the pictures on their worksheet, if
they wish.
Step 4: Then, the teacher gives pupils another worksheet (Β_Γ02_W02) and
encourages them to read (with his/her help) what is written in the circles (i.e. In the
morning, In the afternoon, In the evening, At night). S/he explains that they will have
to match the mascot’s activities with the correct time of the day. Then, s/he checks
pupils’ answers with the class as a whole.
Step 5: The teacher invites pupils to play the game ‘What’s the time, Mr Wolf?” in
the school yard (pupils are familiar with this game from last year). S/he asks a pupil to
be the seeker and pretend to be the wolf, while the rest of the pupils stand in a row
(next to one another, 10-15 metres away). Pupils ask the wolf/seeker: ‘What’s the
time, Mr Wolf?’ and the wolf may answer: ‘It’s three o’clock’. Then, learners make
as many steps forward as the hours the wolf has told them. The game continues until
the wolf has understood that children are very close to him and answers: ‘It’s
lunch/dinner time!’. Then, he starts chasing the children who try to run away.
Whoever gets caught will be the wolf/seeker in the next round.
