Reading Assignment #1:
Choose ONE of the following NON-FICTION novels:
1. Krakauer, John. Into the Wild

to be one of the faithful in this non-fiction selection about a small town football team in
West Texas.
3. Angelou, Maya. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
Angelou’s memoir recounts a youth filled with disappointment, frustration, tragedy, and
finally hard-won independence.
4. Schlosser, Eric. Fast Food Nation
This expose` on fast food in America leaves its reader cringing, instead of craving that
beloved burger.
5. Friedan, Betty. The Feminine Mystique.
In a time when women were referred to as “the weaker sex,” Friedan’s controversial
book questioned society’s sexist attitudes and sparked the modern feminist movement.
6. Hornbacher, Marya. Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia.
"I fell for the great American dream, female version, hook, line, and sinker," Marya
Hornbacher writes. Her memoir reveals the tragic side of skinny.
7. Wolff, Tobias. This Boy’s Life.
Growing up as a rough and tumble greaser, Wolff seeks to protect his mother from her
violent boyfriend.
8. Capote, Truman. In Cold Blood.
Two conmen living in a lonely house in western Kansas are out to make the heist of their
lives. When things don't go as planned, the robbery turns ugly.
9. Moore, Judith. Fat Girl: A Memoir
A breathtakingly frank memoir about being “the big girl” in a size two world.
10. Kaysen, Susanna. Girl Interrupted
Young girl experience in a mental institution

Summer Assignment 1
Select TEN passages from your chosen book that you feel illustrate
the author’s style and voice. Consider phrasing, theme, symbolism,
mood/tone, and literary devices (simile, metaphor, personification,
irony, foreshadowing, etc.). Explain why each speaks to you and how
it is significant to the book in a 7-10 sentence paragraph. The
passage should be recorded at the top of each entry.

Summer Assignment 2
Choose a slave narrative from the options below. Keep detailed
notes about the events, as you will be tested on your selection in the
first days of school.
