The Rising Tide of Dementia - Alzheimer Society of Canada

The Rising Tide of Dementia
2010 - 2011
Annual Report
Help for today
Hope for tomorrow...
President and CEO message
The baby boomers are aging. Today,
over half a million Canadians have
Alzheimer’s disease or another form
of dementia. In just one generation –
by the time our children or
grandchildren become adults - there
will be over one million Canadians
with dementia. The numbers are
scary. This is not about our parent’s
generation – this is about ours. We
need to act now. We can’t just sit back
and wait. Hope lies in making changes
today that will lessen dementia’s
crippling effect on our families, health
care system and economy. So what
can we do to help stem this
rising tide?
FIRST – Each of us needs to learn
about prevention and caring for our
brain health… the benefits of physical
activity, changes we can make in our
diet and other parts of our lives, to
reduce our risk of developing dementia.
And we need to learn about the
importance of early diagnosis.
NEXT – We need to significantly
increase the amount of money spent
on research, to learn more about
prevention, and discover a treatment
that will delay the onset of dementia
and reduce its impact substantially.
THEN – Each of us needs to ensure the
people who we elect to represent us
locally, provincially and nationally are
committed to a Dementia Strategy
that can be adopted by all levels of
government to affect changes in
health care.
LAST – but certainly not least, we
need to support family caregivers who
are struggling with the overwhelming
emotional and financial hardships of
providing care.
to corporate budgets. In 30 years, if
nothing changes, this number will
increase to over 30 million hours. But
change is possible, and within our
reach. The work we do today is an
investment in helping our children and
grandchildren cope with dementia and
Alzheimer’s disease.
Our 2010-11 Annual Report will give
you more details of the work that the
Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan
does every day. We hope that you will
continue to support our cause and our
organization.

us that in Saskatchewan alone, family
caregivers provide nine million hours
of care each year. Think about what

Honouring our Volunteers
The Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan was established by a small committed group of volunteers, and volunteers still
play a key role in the organization’s ability to provide help and hope to people affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
We thank:
● Volunteer Support and Information Group Facilitators who provide community-based support to family caregivers
● Board and Committee members who provide leadership and direction
● Volunteer Educators who deliver a variety of presentations throughout the province
● Fundraising event volunteers who plan and carry out fundraising events
● Walkers, Door-to-Door Canvassers and Coffee Break® Hosts who raise funds to support the Society
● Office volunteers who help stuff envelopes, organize mailings and send out information packages
In 2010 - 2011, the Society honoured the exceptional volunteers pictured on this page.

Support and Education
Since 1982, The Alzheimer Society of
Saskatchewan has provided
information and support to
individuals living with Alzheimer’s
disease and other dementias,
family members, friends and other
caregivers. We accomplish this in
many ways, including:
● Support and Information Groups
for Caregivers
● Support Groups for People with
Early Memory Loss
● Information, referral and support
on an individual basis through our
offices in Regina and Saskatoon,
and our toll free number
● Education programs
● Community presentations
● Printed material on a wide
variety of issues and concerns
● The Society’s website –
www.alzheimer.sk.ca
Link® Coordinators travelled to these
communities on a regular basis to
meet with community partners,
pharmacists, volunteers and
physicians to promote the benefits of
referring the the Alzheimer Society
using First Link® and to share
information about the Society’s
programs and services.
Prince Albert in October 2010. Two
hundred people attended the two
forums. The Society thanks presenting
sponsor Fries Tallman Lumber, as well
as the Government of Saskatchewan
Community Initiatives Fund and
media sponsors Yorkton This Week,
GX94 radio in Yorkton, and the Prince
Albert Daily Herald.
An evaluation of the initial two years
of the First Link® program found that
clients who were connected to the
Alzheimer Society via First Link® were
referred, on average, 11 months
earlier than those who self-referred.
First Link® was also found to have a
positive impact on increasing
understanding and awareness of the
Society and other community
resources among health professionals,
including physicians.
The success of the forums led the
Society to develop a Heads Up for
Healthier Brains presentation that our
Public Education Coordinators deliver
throughout the province. These
presentations are also supported by
Fries Tallman Lumber and the
Community Initiatives Fund.
First Link®
Public Forums
First Link® is an innovative health care
initiative that improves the quality of
life for people living with Alzheimer’s
disease and related dementias and
their families by identifying and
reaching out to them as early as
possible in the disease process to
provide comprehensive and
coordinated services. First Link®
enables physicians, specialists and
other health care and community
service providers to directly refer
individuals and their families to the
Alzheimer Society for services that
meet their immediate and ongoing
needs.
Following the success of the Heads Up
for Healthier Brains forums held in
Regina and Saskatoon in 2009, the
Society brought brain fitness
consultant Guy Pilch back to
Saskatchewan to deliver healthy brain
messages at forums in Yorkton and
With funding received through the
Alzheimer Society of Canada and the
Saskatchewan Ministry of Health, the
Society targeted the cities and
surrounding communities of Swift
Current (Cypress Health Region),
Estevan (Sun Country Health Region),
and North Battleford (Prairie North

Understanding Alzheimer’s
Disease
An Alzheimer Society of Canada
federation survey conducted in July
2010 revealed that 23 percent of baby
boomers couldn’t name even one
warning sign of Alzheimer’s disease.
With the first boomers turning 65 this
year, it is critical that this cohort learn
the warning signs and what they can
do to reduce their risk of developing
dementia.
Over half of Canadians
know someone
who is living with
Alzheimer’s disease
The Society is working hard to change
that knowledge gap through
Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease
presentations that identify risk factors
and warning signs, and stress the
importance of early diagnosis.
In 2010 - 2011, we delivered Alzheimer’s
disease and healthy brain messages to
2383 people at 95 presentations.
Kaleidoscope of Care Annual
Provincial Conference:
Understanding Diversity in
Dementia Care
The Society’s annual conference for
professional caregivers was held on
September 28 and 29 in Regina.
Keynote speakers were Dr. J.B. Orange,
whose presentation was entitled
“Enhancing Personhood via
Communication Strategies for
Individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease
and Their Caregivers,” and Dr. Jean
Boodhoo who spoke on “The
Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease and
Related Dementias.”
We thank Gold Sponsor Pfizer, and
Bronze Sponsors Bayshore Home

Learning Series
Fifteen Learning Series sessions were
provided to a total of 365 people
during the year. The Society continued
to receive support from Telehealth
with Next Steps for Families being
delivered at 20 sites throughout the
province and Care Essentials at 21
sites. Care Essentials was taught be a
team that included Dr. Jenny Basran
and Social Worker Irma Robson from
Geriatric Evaluation and Management
Services and Continuing Care Consultant
Tracy Danylyshen-Laycock from the
Saskatoon Health Region, as well as
Susan Wood, the Director of Care at
the William Booth Special Care Home.

Research
Research to find the causes and a cure for Alzheimer disease continues to be a high priority for the Society. In 2010 2011, we contributed $209,177 to support several initiatives.
Saskatchewan Research Chair
in Alzheimer’s Disease and
Related Dementia
University of Saskatchewan
researcher Dr. Darrell Mousseau was
awarded the Saskatchewan Research
Chair worth $1 million over the next
five years to study a link between
Alzheimer’s disease and depression.
The Chair is a partnership among the
Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan,
the Saskatchewan Health Research
Foundation, and the University of
Saskatchewan. The two funding
partners each provide $100,000 per
year for five years, while the
University of Saskatchewan provides
the necessary infrastructure and
support for the Chair.
Alzheimer Society Doctoral
and Post-Doctoral Research
Awards
University of Regina clinical psychology
doctoral student Sarah Chan received
an Alzheimer Society of Canada
research award in the “Quality of Life”
stream. Her project focuses on pain
assessment in older adults with
dementia living in long-term care and
will revise and validate the Pain
Assessment Checklist for Seniors with
Limited Ability to Communicate (PACSLAC). PACSLAC has been found to be
one of the most valid and reliable
tools of its kind. When used
regularly by long-term care nurses,
pain management for older adults
with dementia increases, pain
behaviours decrease, and nurse
distress and burnout is reduced.
University of Saskatchewan doctoral
candidate Jocelyn Poock has
Dr. Mousseau is a professor in the College of Medicine’s Department of
Psychiatry at the University of
Saskatchewan, and the former vicepresident of the Alzheimer Society of
Saskatchewan board.
He and his team have found that an
enzyme that plays an important role
in depression can severely weaken
brain cells and perhaps trigger the
neurodegenerative processes that
lead to Alzheimer’s disease. The
team is also looking at the role of
anti-depressants in this process.
Over the next five years, Dr. Mousseau
and his team hope to come closer to
discovering earlier diagnostic
measures and prevent Alzheimer’s
disease in a significant portion of
the population.

Research Program Doctoral Award
worth just over $20,000. Jocelyn’s
research will examine the effect of the
dual task of “walking while talking” on
the gait of people with Alzheimer’s
disease and compare it with the gait
of healthy older adults to determine
the role of higher brain functions in
clinical gait assessments.
Sébastien Hébert, who studies at the
Université Laval in Quebec City is the
recipient of a $180,000 Alzheimer
Society of Saskatchewan Young
Investigator grant. His project is
entitled “The Importance of microRNA
target site polymorphisms in
Alzheimer’s disease.”
Another Université Laval researcher,
Carl Julien, is the recipient of a
$90,000 Alzheimer Society of
Saskatchewan Post-Doctoral
Fellowship Award to study the
“Effect of type 2 diabetes on the in

The Alzheimer Society Research
Program is a collaborative initiative of
the Alzheimer Society federation to
help launch the careers of outstanding
young researchers and fund the work
of established researchers.
Spotlight on Research
In September, the Society’s Spotlight
on Research evening in Regina
attracted more than 150 people.
Attendees were able to view two
dozen research posters, mingle and
chat with reseachers and take in two
informative presentations by Dr.
Darrell Mousseau and Dr. Thomas
Hadjistavropoulos, Professor of
Psychology and Director of the Centre
on Aging and Health at the University
of Regina. We thank the Saskatchewan
Health Research Foundation and the
Canadian Institutes for Health
Research for supporting this event.
Special Events / Sponsors
Throughout the year, funds raised at special events support Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan programs and services
for people living with dementia, their families and caregivers, as well as research into causes, treatments and a cure.
Special events also raise awareness about the disease and brain health. The Society thanks our sponsors, volunteers,
event participants and donors.

A Legacy of Help and Hope
Many people choose to further the work of their favourite charities in their financial and estate plans.
Gifts given through wills, life insurance, securities and other vehicles can leave a legacy of help and help to
those who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease while providing tax benefits or income security.
The Circle of Hope is the Alzheimer Society’s special recognition program that honours and recognizes
donors who have made a future gift to the Society. Saskatchewan Circle of Hope Members are:
Michael G. Egnatoff
Gerald Naylen
The following people made a gift to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan through their estate in
2009 - 2010:
Justine Johnson
Bertha Augusta Kohli
Jessie Magee
Roy Kenneth Meston

The Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan is a
participant in Imagine Canada’s Ethical Code Program.
The Ethical Code is a set of standards for charitable
organizations to manage and report their fundraising
and financial affairs responsibly. Participation in the
program demonstrates transparency, accountability
and donor trust.
12
Financial Highlights 2010 - 2011
Once again, the Alzheimer Society of
Saskatchewan raised over $1 million in
revenue in 2010 - 2011.
However, we incurred a deficit this
year due to an increase in program
and services delivery, a substantial
increase in research investment, and
the costs involved in developing a new
major gifts campaign.
Increased revenue from fundraising
projects and sponsorships were offset
by a slight decrease in donations and a
significant drop in bequest revenue.
13
We are confident that the major gifts
campaign developed during the year
and set to launch publicly in 2011 2012 will ensure we reach our goal of
raising an additional $2.5 million in
the next five years, above and beyond
our current fundraising requirements.
