Literacy
Read the Katie Morag series of stories by Mairi
Hedderwick. Discuss the writer and her style and her
original stimulus for writing the stories. Write own
structured stories, letters, holiday postcards and
character sketches related to Katie Morag.
Introduce children to the use of synonyms in order to
improve the quality of their writing. Use non-fiction
books to research different islands, seaside holidays
and sea creatures—link to Science and geography work.
Organise writing using appropriate structures such as
headings, sub-headings, captions and labels. Make an
information leaflet about the Island of Struay.
Continue to develop comprehension skills using
appropriate stories and non-fiction texts.
Science
Discuss the sea as an environment and the variety of
plants and animals that live there. Name, identify and
sort sea creatures by their physical characteristics.
Group the different animals and represent their
findings using a graph, Carroll Diagram or Venn diagram.
Discuss and research the rock pools of St Mary’s Island
and the creatures that live there in preparation for the
class visit .

Numeracy
Use the context of The Isle of Struay’s Post
Office/shop to develop ability to answer money
problems , finding totals over £1 and giving change.
Solve topic related word problems using all four
number operations and develop understanding of
appropriate vocabulary.
Collect data on seaside holidays and animals and use to
produce graphs, Carroll Diagrams and Venn Diagrams.
