PAWTUCKET (9-12)
1:35 pm
Gwinnett Braves LHP Sean Newcomb (1-1, 4.19) vs. Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Hector Velazquez (1-0, 2.79)
The End to April – The Pawtucket Red Sox and the Gwinnett Braves close out their 4-game series, this 6-game homestand, and the
month of April this afternoon at 1:35 pm at McCoy Stadium. The PawSox are 9-12 thus far with the finale for the month on tap for
today. So no matter the outcome, the Sox will suffer their first losing April since 2010 when they went 9-13. Last April they also
played 22 games and finished 11-11. They were in 4th-place and -1½ GB after a 5-0 loss to Syracuse last April 30th. They enter today
in 5th-place and -4 GB. Until now, April had been a terrific month for the PawSox as they finished .500 or better during each of the
prior six Aprils. Their last losing April before 2017 came in 2010 when they went 9-13. Since then they have gone 13-10 in April of
2011, 16-9 in 2012, 15-11 in 2013, 16-11 in 2014, 14-8 in 2015, and 11-11 last April.
The End of the Braves – Unless these teams face each other in the Governors’ Cup Finals beginning on September 12 in Gwinnett,
the PawSox and Braves will not meet again this season. The Braves currently lead the season-series by a 4-1 margin with one game to
go despite the fact Pawtucket has out-scored Gwinnett, 16-14 in the first five games combined. Pawtucket’s lone win was a 10-1
victory (on Friday). Gwinnett has 3-2, 5-2, 2-1, and 3-1 wins to their credit. Yesterday/last night the Braves swept a make-up
doubleheader (necessitated by a rainout in Gwinnett last Sunday) by 2-1 and 3-1 (in 9-innings) scores. These clubs are meeting for the
second straight weekend. The PawSox won the opener of this 4-game set at McCoy with a 10-1 rout of the Braves Friday night
(Pawtucket’s largest margin of victory this season). The Braves swept their abbreviated 2-game series vs. the PawSox a week ago
Friday, 3-2 and Saturday, 5-2 in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Six Pack – After four consecutive days off (a rainout, a scheduled offday, and two straight rainouts from Sunday – Wednesday), the
PawSox will play their 6th game in four days this afternoon. The six games will have been played in about a 76-hour span by the time
today’s game is over (started Thursday at 12:05 pm and should end today by 4:30 pm). Pawtucket split a make-up doubleheader
against Indianapolis Thursday afternoon at McCoy…dropping the first game in 8-innings, 5-3 before winning game two, 4-2 to snap
their 4-game losing skid. This homestand was slated for 6 (single) games from Tuesday through Sunday, but the PawSox are instead
cramming 6-games into 4-days (Thursday – Sunday) with two make-up doubleheaders added to the mix (they are 2-3 thus far).
Double Dipping – Pawtucket has already played four doubleheaders this season – they have been swept three times and split the other.
The PawSox are 1-7 when they play games during doubleheaders. They are 8-5 when they play single games. Thankfully, unless any
other rainouts occur, their next doubleheader is not slated until late-July when the Sox go to Indianapolis.
No Run on Runs – Pawtucket scored just one run during each of their losses last night. Other than their 10-run uprising on Friday,
the PawSox have scored 4 runs or less in each of their other 9 games since April 18 (22 runs total in those 9 games and 10 runs in one
game on Friday).
Getting the Best of Gwinnett – Even with the 1-4 start vs. the Braves this year, Pawtucket has still won 24 of their last 36 games vs.
Gwinnett overall dating back to the 2012 season. The PawSox won the final five games vs. the Braves during the 2012 season
(finishing 6-2) and the first five meetings of the 2013 season (also finishing 6-2) to compile a 10-game winning streak against
Gwinnett. The Sox were 5-3 vs. the Braves in 2014, 4-2 vs. Gwinnett in 2015, and 3-2 vs. the G-Braves in 2016 (2-1 here at McCoy
and 1-1 in Lawrenceville, GA). They are 1-4 thus far in 2017.
Pawtucket vs. Gwinnett This Season – The PawSox have out-scored Gwinnett, 16-14 in the 5 games this season. The Sox are hitting
.242 (39-for-161) with 2 HR (by Court & Swihart) while Sox pitchers are 1-4 with a 3.12 ERA vs. the Braves (14 ER in 40.1 IP).

It’s a Marathon Not a Sprint – Pawtucket comes into play today with a 9-12 record which has them alone in 5th-place in the IL North
(-4 GB of front-running Buffalo). Pawtucket’s road record is 3-6 while they are 6-6 at home The PawSox are 11th in Team Batting at
.236 and 10th in Team ERA at 3.83.
Streaks Were Made to be Broken – The PawSox have been a streaky team thus far. They began the season with back-to-back wins
then lost three straight. They immediately bounced back to win four consecutive games (April 11-14), but followed that with a 3game losing skid. The Sox blanked Charlotte on April 19, 4-0, but that was their last victory until G2 on Thursday as they dropped 4
in a row (with two rainouts to boot) from April 20-27 (G1). They won back-to-back games on Thursday (G2) and Friday but currently
have lost two in a row (last night’s twin bill).
Series Business – The PawSox are 1-3-2 in their first five series thus far…splitting a 4-game set at Lehigh Valley to begin the season,
taking 3 of 4 from Syracuse at McCoy to open their home schedule, dropping 2 of 3 to the IronPigs from April 14-15, losing 2 of 3 in
Charlotte over a week ago, getting swept in a rain-shortened 2-game set at Gwinnett last weekend, and splitting an abbreviated 2-game
series vs. Indianapolis on Thursday at McCoy. Last year the PawSox went 20-17-7 in their 44 series played (20 series wins, 17 losses,
and 7 series splits).
A Look Back Before We Go Forth – The PawSox, despite a 74-68 record last season, finished in 4th-place in the IL North last year
thanks in large part to playing in easily the most difficult division in the International League (4 of the 6 teams in the North were
above .500 – Scranton/WB, Lehigh Valley, Rochester, and Pawtucket while only one team total in the other two divisions wound up
over .500 - Columbus). However, the Sox finished 16 games better than a year before (2015) when they went 59-85 and wound up in
last-place overall in the entire league. Last year they ended up 5th overall in the 14-team IL and with the 9th-best record in all of
Triple-A.
2016 is a Winner – The PawSox registered a winning season in 2016 and finished above .500 for the 5th time in the last 6 years with
their 74-68 mark. They went 81-61 in 2011, 79-65 in 2012 winning the Governors’ Cup, 80-63 in 2013, and 79-65 in 2014 winning
another Governors’ Cup, but 59-85 in 2015.
Pitchers Shine and Batters Average – Pawtucket pitchers posted their best ERA in 35 years with a 3.36 ERA in 2016 - their best
since a franchise-record 3.30 ERA in 1981. PawSox batters had a .254 average last season which was a few points below their norm
in recent years but much-improved from their .238 average in 2015.
Home Bodies –Pawtucket finished 41-31 at home last year – matching their season-high of 10-games over the .500 mark at McCoy.
Road Tested - The Sox dropped 18 of their last 28 away games from July 8 through the remainder of last season and wound up
equaling their season-low of 4-games under .500 on the road at 33-37.
The End of the Road - The PawSox hit much better on the road than at home last season. They hit .265 in their 70 road games with
45 HR compared to .241 in their 72 home games with 49 HR. Sox pitchers posted excellent ERAs both on the road and at home.
They were 33-37 with a 3.45 ERA on the road and 41-31 with a 3.27 ERA at McCoy.
BOSTON RED SOX DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM –
Portland (9-8) – The Portland Sea Dogs (AA) were edged at Reading, 6-5 last night. Teddy Stankiewicz started – 6 IP, 6 H, 5 R.
The loss went to Luis Ysla (0-1) in relief – 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R. Rafael Devers drilled a solo HR (#2) and Tzu-Wei Lin smacked a 2-run
HR (#3). Heiker Meneses added 2 RBI.
Salem (13-9) – The Salem Red Sox (A) were 10-3 losers vs. Potomac last night. Matt Kent (1-2) took the loss – 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R. 2B
Josh Tobias, acquired from the Phillies in the Clay Buchholz deal, had his second straight 3-hit game.
Greenville (15-8) – The Greenville Drive (A) won at Augusta, 4-1 last night. Michael Shawaryn (2-1) was outstanding to earn the
victory - 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 SO. Stephen Nogosek notched SV #7 – 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R. Santiago Espinal led the offense with 3 hits.

PAWSOX PLAYER MOVES – The PawSox today placed INF Ryan Court on the 7-day disabled list with a right foot fracture
suffered when he fouled a ball of his foot in Game 2 last night. Pawtucket reinstated catcher Tim Roberson from the DL (right calf
strain) to take Court’s roster spot. The PawSox are at the roster limit with 25 active players. OF Brian Bogusevic (fractured right
foot), INF Mike Miller (hand/wrist), and INF Ryan Court (fractured right foot) are on the disabled list. Rehabbing Brock Holt does
not count against the active roster.
Boston Red Sox INF/OF Brock Holt joined the PawSox on a 20-day injury rehab assignment on Friday night going 1-for-3 with a
walk, RBI and run scored as the DH. He was the DH in Game 1 last night and also went 1-for-3. Holt has been on Boston’s disabled
list since April 21 with Vertigo. He played in just 6 games for the Red Sox this season (3 in the OF, 2 as DH and 1 at 3B) and was 2for-15 with 1 RBI. Brock missed 6 games from April 14-19, returned to play on April 20 in Toronto, but then went on the DL the next
day. Holt has been a versatile player for the Red Sox since 2013. He came into this season with a Red Sox career average of .271 in
355 games while playing every position except for pitcher and catcher. Last season he hit .255 in 94 games for Boston with a careerbest 7 HR. Brock was an American League All-Star in 2015 and finished with a career-high 129 games played while batting .280 with
27 2B, 6 3B, 2 HR and 45 RBI. Holt has played for the PawSox in 2013 (.258 in 83 games), 2014 (.315 in 27 games), and 2016 on
rehab (.320 in 8 games).
Pawtucket had three players recalled to Boston before the PawSox even played a game. The lucky list so far…RHP Noe Ramirez
(back with the PawSox), INF Marco Hernandez, INF Deven Marrero (back with the PawSox), RHP Ben Taylor (returned to
Pawtucket but now back with Boston), and LHP Brian Johnson (back with the PawSox). That does not include rehabbing reliever
Robbie Ross Jr. who was recalled from his injury rehab assignment on April 13 and rehabbing OF Jackie Bradley, Jr. (recalled on
April 21). Rehabbing INF Josh Rutledge was transferred from Pawtucket to Portland on April 24 before being recalled to Boston on
April 25.
It was another busy player movement year in 2016. Pawtucket used 57 different players last season (30 position players and 27
pitchers). Pawtucket added 33 new players to their roster after Opening Night last year. Only three players remained on the PawSox
active roster for the entire 2016 season – relievers Kyle Martin & Roman Mendez and INF/OF Chris Marrero. Pawtucket sent 20
players to Boston during the course of last season and Pawtucket made 197 player transactions.
In 2015 they made 220 player moves and in 2014 they ended up with a total of 209 player transactions. As mentioned, the Sox used
57 players last season. They used 62 different players in 2015 (29 position players & 33 pitchers) and the year before the Sox
employed 61 different players during the regular-season (34 position players & 27 pitchers). That number rose to 66 players including
the post-season. The club-record is 70 different players set in in both 1995 and 2006. Pawtucket promoted 20 players to Boston last
season, 23 different players in 2015, and 25 players in 2014.
