HAVE TRUNK, WILL TRAVEL
When Nathan Wood traveled, he had no
trouble identifying his luggage. This striking
trunk made by James R. Giles of Sterling,
Connecticut, is covered in hand-painted oilcloth
and has Wood’s initials and the date 1829 brightly
painted on the lid. Time and travel had taken its
toll on the trunk and required the combined efforts
of textile, painting, object, and furniture
conservators to devise a treatment plan for the
deteriorated leather, flaking paint, and soiled
exterior. Conservators cleaned the trunk,
consolidated the flaking paint and fragile leather, and then
inpainted losses. The polyester film lip they created now
protects the fragile leather on the edge of the lid.

VISION AND LEGACY:
ESTATE GIFTS TO SUPPORT
WINTERTHUR
Planned gifts come in many
shapes and sizes and represent
a notable method of helping
Winterthur remain a vibrant
center for education, recreation,
preservation, and conservation.
If you have supported
Winterthur over many years,
whether as a Member or
volunteer, perhaps you will
consider a planned gift that
will ensure your dedication to
this remarkable site continues
in perpetuity.
Estate gifts offer the opportunity
to help Winterthur in a broad
sense or can be directed toward
a specific goal. For instance, a
bequest or trust could be
oriented toward endowing a
special lecture or program or to
the ongoing restoration of the
tree canopy. In thinking about
estate gifts, consider the features
of Winterthur you cherish most
and would like to see preserved
for future generations.
In addition to the benefit for
Winterthur, an estate gift
provides genuine advantages to
your financial planning. Certain
annuities can provide dividends
for you or your family, and
planned gifts can also offer
significant tax benefits.
Following your commitment
to a planned gift, you receive
membership in Winterthur’s
Port Royal Society, which was
established to recognize those
donors who have furthered the
generous bequest of Henry
Francis du Pont. This group
is named for the Port Royal
Entrance Hall and Parlor,
signature rooms at Winterthur
that encapsulate how vision
and planning can become a
tangible legacy.

giving opportunities at

THE WINTERTHUR FUND
The Winterthur Fund is an annual
giving program. Through the fund,
gifts provide critically needed
support to further Winterthur’s
mission to preserve and enhance the
museum, garden, and library
collections and to delight and
enlighten all who come here—from
schoolchildren to sophisticated
collectors.
Winterthur’s magnificent
collection of antiques, assembled
by Henry Francis du Pont,
celebrates the very best in
American craftsmanship and style.
The glorious 60-acre garden, with
its surrounding meadows,
woodlands, and waterways, is an
oasis of beauty and tranquility.
The library, which houses books,
periodicals, manuscripts, and
photographs, is a research center
that serves staff, students, and
the public.
The Winterthur Fund has made
many programs possible, including:
• The annual Yuletide tour, which
showcases beloved favorites and
presents dazzling new displays.
• The exhibition Paint, Pattern &
People: Furniture of Southeastern
Pennsylvania, 1725–1850, which
provided the theme for the 2012
Sewell C. Biggs Winterthur
Furniture Forum—our most
successful conference to date.
• A Lasting Legacy: Sixty Years of
Winterthur Graduate Programs
exhibition, which examines the
development of preeminent
conservators and curators trained
at Winterthur.
• Winterthur’s garden programs,
including a new estate tour that
offers Members an insider’s view
of the farm operations.
Without the generous support of
the Winterthur Fund, those
programs and many more would
not be possible. We are grateful to
the trustees, donors, Members, staff,
and volunteers who, in addition to
their annual membership and other
contributions, give generously to the
Winterthur Fund. Thank you for
your support.

For more than 20 years, the F. M.
Kirby Foundation, established in
1931 by one of the founders of the
F. W. Woolworth Company, has
helped fund important initiatives at
Winterthur. The foundation’s
philosophy hinges on the principle
that grantmakers and non-profits
collaboratively aim to ennoble and
enrich our society.
Winterthur provides an array of
educational opportunities for
children and adults in keeping with
the foundation’s philosophy, such as
exhibitions, programs, and events
that appeal to a diverse and
intergenerational audience.
Museum tours introduce visitors to
American decorative arts and their
cultural context as well as
Winterthur’s history and life on a
large, self-sufficient estate.
Special focus tour participants spend
their visit with a curator or specialist
concentrating on collections such as
Federal-era furniture, tall case
clocks, pewter, quilts, or hooked rugs
to understand the history,
fabrication, and contexts in which
the objects were created and used.

THE PORT ROYAL SOCIETY
The Port Royal Society honors those who
have made a provision in their estate plans to
benefit Winterthur. The society includes those
individuals favoring Winterthur through a
bequest intention, beneficiary designation of
a retirement plan or life insurance policy, or
an irrevocable life-income arrangement such
as a charitable remainder trust, charitable gift
annuity, or the pooled income fund or a
promised gift to the collection. We encourage
others who have an interest in including
Winterthur in their estate plans, or who have
already done so anonymously, to contact the
Development Office.

GIFT IN TRIBUTE
The towering trees of Winterthur
have provided the structure and
shelter for our unique garden
since its beginning more than 100
years ago. During that time, the
du Pont family has had a special
appreciation for these sentinels of
the garden, and the institution
has made every effort to care for
and preserve them.
These trees, some of them now
more than 200 years old, require
on-going care to keep them in
the best possible health. To carry
on the tradition of care that the
du Pont family started, we created
a special Tree Endowment Fund.
This endowment is supported
through the Gift in Tribute
program, which offers guests and
Members the opportunity to
support the care of trees and to
become connected to the garden
by planting a tree to
commemorate an occasion or
loved one.
With the help of a garden staff
member, prospective donors
choose from an approved list of
selected sites and trees and
choose how they want the label
attached to the tree to read.
Winterthur will keep you
informed as we prepare the tree
and planting location and will
notify you when the process is
complete. Each year, dozens of
our supporters and their families
return to Winterthur to see their
trees grow and mature. If you
would like to find out how you
can support this important
program, please contact Greg
Mackenzie, 302.888.4874.

VOLUNTEERS
Hundreds of volunteers regularly dedicate their time and expertise in every division of Winterthur. This year, volunteers assisted with large-scale events and programs such as Point-to-Point,
the Delaware Antiques Show, Historic Automobiles at Winterthur, and Enchanted Summer Day. Others assisted with the daily operations of the garden, development, collections management,
library, and public programs divisions. Volunteers lead within the organization as well as through service on the Board of Trustees and various committees. Winterthur appreciates all volunteers
who share their time in support of our mission.
