COURSE DESCRIPTION AND POLICIES
(You are not allowed to use your cell phone during class or any other electronic device that may distract you
or your classmates)
Spanish 1AB is an introductory course to Spanish language and culture that encourages the
development of all four-language skills – listening, reading, speaking and writing – within a
communicative approach. The final goal of the course is to provide the foundation for oral
comprehension and proficiency in using the Spanish language at the introductory level.
Learning Outcomes. Upon the successful completion of Spanish 1AB, the student is expected
to be able to:
•
Recognize and distinguish the conjugation patterns of both regular and irregular verbs in
the present and present progressive tense, and demonstrate ability to manipulate them.
•
Understand written and spoken numbers and express and write them in contexts including
the expression of dates, prices, basic counting, and mathematical operations.
•
Identify and understand basic vocabulary that will allow for basic communication in
Spanish (introducing oneself, describing one’s family, and exchanging pleasantries).
•
Identify mayor cultural and socio-historical aspects of the Hispanic world (countries,
capitals and geographical location, costumes, food, art and music).
•
Read with understanding shorts texts and cultural overviews of the Hispanic world.
Exams and Quizzes. No make-up exams or quizzes! Your grade for a missed quiz or exam is
zero. You will be allowed to drop ONE missed quiz or drop the lowest score if you have taken
all your quizzes. Quizzes can be given at any time with or without previous notice. You cannot
miss or drop ANY of your exams. If you miss an exam because of an emergency or sickness, you
need to communicate immediately with the instructor and bring a medical certificate. Under very
exceptional circumstances, prior arrangements may be made with the instructor. In any of these
cases, the missed exam must be taken before the next class (I bring exams back, and discuss
them, immediately the next class).
Student Material and Study Method. You should always bring to class both the ¡Arriba! and
Destinos textbooks. The ¡Arriba! book is divided in two parts: “Textbook” and “Student
Activities Manual” (SAM). The SAM will be used for your homework for both written and oral
practice. In order to do the oral exercises, you need to go online and follow the directions
indicated below (1) or as shown on page one of the SAM section of the Arriba book. All pages
with written and oral exercises from the SAM must be placed in a folder, along with pages from
Destinos, and any other additional handout that may be given in class. The folder will be
collected prior to each exam and graded. A late folder will be accepted only once and will result
in the loss of points. Destinos, a program based on the telenovela or soap-opera format, has been
very successful in introducing students to the Spanish language and culture. It includes the
Destinos book and videos for each episode. In the Destinos book you will do the Preparación
section before watching the episodes and the Tienes buena memoria section after the episode.
The videos will be viewed in class. If you miss a video episode, you must view it on your own at
the Library or at the website indicated below (2), do the corresponding homework, and be ready
to answer questions by the next class meeting. Regarding study method, the use of flashcards,
especially for vocabulary and verbs, has been proven valuable for remembering meaning and
practicing conjugation. Study groups are helpful as well as exchanging phones with one or more
classmates so that, in the event of absence, you can get the information about any missed
material or homework. You can also request help from the Tutoring Center (Student Services
395-4430) as well as from your instructor during office hours.
Oral Communication and Participation Cards. In order to keep a record and evaluate your
actual participation in class, the instructor will have a card for each student. At random, students
will be called on to respond to questions and graded on a scale from 1 to 5. If a student who is
called on to respond is absent, she or he will automatically receive a grade of zero for that
occasion.
Attendance. Regular attendance is essential. According to the College rules, any student who
misses the equivalent of two weeks of classes (10 hours) may be dropped by the instructor. You
are expected to be present every day of class, be on time and never leave before the class is over.
If you have an exceptional circumstance or emergency, please contact me immediately,
preferably by e-mail or by leaving a clear message. Remember, if you are absent, contact one of
your classmates in order to find out what was done in class and the assigned homework for the
next class. If you stop coming to the class, please remember that it is your responsibility to
officially drop the class with Admission and Records. If you fail to drop the course you will
receive an F.
Classroom Conduct. Food is not allowed in the classroom. Please refrain from non-relevant
talking during class as it may be distracting to your fellow classmates. Bakersfield College has a
no-tolerance policy with regards to cheating and plagiarism. Students caught cheating will be
penalized. Finally, we are first and foremost a community of learners for whom respect for
others, courtesy and good manners should be the standard at all times.
Grading System: The final grade will be determined according to the following distribution and
