Nova is an award winning quilter and quilt historian. She has been on the teaching faculty at IOF Houston for three years and served as guest lecturer at Texas A&M. We are delighted to have her share her knowledge about the 1933 World’s fair in Chicago and the 25,000 people who entered quilts in that fair. Join us for a interesting and enjoyable program! There will not be a workshop this month, but in May and June well, get ready and sign up! Donna Robertson is teaching The Magic Triangle and in June Sue Nickels is offering 2 workshops Basic Machine Quilting and Raw Edge Stitch. See you at Guild! President’s Piece WOW!!!! What a great Quilt Show. Congratulations to Iliece Baker for a job well done, and also to all of our members for their tireless hours of help. Without all of you, this could have never been done. If you were not able to attend, you missed a great display of quilts. The talent in our Guild and from all over East Texas is just unbelievable. Now, on to 2015. Thank you, Kathy Woodson, for a great presentation of antique quilts. Your passion for these quilts and the knowledge of the different eras is super. Don’t forget about the Reach to Recovery Pillow Stuffing after Guild meeting in April. Sandy McClenny Karol’s Refreshment Crew C Library CornertheAfter seeing all those beautiful quits at our show are you ready to start one for our 2015 Show? If so we have some help for you. First is “The Quilter’s Catalog”, which is a comprehensive resource guide. Among the many things in this book are the best Web Sites, Hints and Tips, 12 projects, all the right tools and much more. Great book, which was donated in February and it would take a half page to even touch 40% of the information it covers. Are you feeling adventurous? “The Landscape Quilt” by Sheryl Robinson might be the book you need. Then there is the tried and true = “120 Patterns for Traditional Patchwork Quilts”, by Maggie Malone. The next offering is “The Classic American Quilt Collection – AMISH”, a Rodale Quilt Book. Last we have the “Dahlia Quilts and Projects”, by Cheryl Benner and Rachel T. Pellman. All the books in this paragraph were Sheryl Dorman’s, donated by Marletta Herndon. If these don’t spark your interest, come by the library and see more than 800 books waiting for you. Karol Rank 2 Quilters’ Guild of East Texas meets the second Thursday of each month at First Baptist Church of Tyler South Campus 1001 FM 2813 Flint, TX. The Stitchin’ Times is published monthly by Quilters’ Guild of East Texas PO Box 130773 Tyler, TX 75713-0773 Quilters Guild of East Texas Minutes of Meeting March 13, 2014 The meeting of the Quilters' Guild of East Texas was held at First Baptist Church--South Campus on Thursday, March 13, 2014. Sandra McClenny, President, called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as printed. The financial report for February has been posted at the entrance to today’s general meeting. Contact Cyndy Adrian if you have any questions. (See attached report.) The Hive: Sue Hogan filled in for Susan Buntz today. The meeting for today will be postponed until April when it will cover paper piecing, curved piecing and circles. A pattern will be furnished for $3.00. Supplies in the current newsletter still apply. Sunshine and Shadows: Sue Hogan presented news on members. Deal or Dud: Venus Thomas showed a soap holder with suction cups designed to stick on a wall. It will also work on the end of your sewing machine to hold glasses, feet for the machine, seam ripper or anything you need to be handy and not lost. She got hers in the bathroom items section of Walmart. Programs: Susan Nelson commented on the good Dallas Quilt Show and the good trip our guild had. A workshop list for 2014 is posted in the foyer with the opportunity to sign up through the June workshops. April’s program features Nova Montgomery with an emphasis on feather weights and quilting. Please bring any quilt or wall hanging you have that was quilted on a featherweight. Our program today features Cathy Woodson. Quilt Show: Ileice Baker said, “WE ARE READY!” She thanked the guild members for the opportunity to work on this show. She asked for kitchen help early Saturday morning (9 am to 11 am), frame transportation on Wednesday and Saturday, white glove helpers, purchasers for ferns and out of town advertising distributers for this week end. Preview party is Thursday evening at 5:45. You may bring one (non-voting) guest. The guild members, only, will choose a favorite quilt. Ruth Barber thanked the guild members for the small quilts they have brought for the silent auction. Ileice Baker asked for a volunteer to collect door prizes from the vendors. Quilt turn-in is Tuesday, March 18, 2014, from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. A list of vendors is on the registration table today. Reception: Rose Wilson welcomed 4 guests. Then she awarded door prizes from A Nimble Thimble, Sharman’s, A Needle Niche, Marleta Herndon, Susan Nelson and All Those Quilts. Winners were encouraged to thank the donors. Miscellaneous Announcements: Sue Hogan asked especially for white glove volunteers for both days of the quilt show. Cheryl Fillion was selling raffle tickets for a Relay for Life Quilt. Guild members are invited to a Fiber Arts Exhibit downtown at the Gallery Main Street on the downtown square. Several guild members have items on exhibit. It will run from March 15 until May 5. Our quilt show is next week! At our meeting on April 10, 2014, we will have a sew day following the meeting to make Reach to Recovery pillows for cancer patients. Amy Sandidge received a first place ribbon in the Dallas Quilt Show. Dottie Mae Groves received a third place and 2 honorable mention ribbons in the Dallas Quilt Show, and a first place and a second place ribbon at La Grange. Harold Groves received an honorable mention ribbon in the Dallas Quilt Show and a third place ribbon at La Grange. The meeting adjourned at 10:20 am for Show and Share followed by a program from Cathy Woodson entitled “Our Quilting Roots: Quilts from 1790 to 1860.” Cathy presented beautiful samples from her private collection. Respectfully submitted, Sharon Moses Secretary THE STITCHIN’ TIMES APRIL 2014 3 Quilt Show Reflection Wow! Quilt Show time is upon us! You incredible quilters have supplied this year’s show with well over 200 Wow!!! What a fantastic quilt show. You ladies all out did yourselves to bring East Texas one of the best quilt shows ever. Our total in tickets was approximately 2275. I would say that is a successful show. Your quilt entries were fabulous. I heard so many compliments on the show. I was honored to accept the compliments on your behalf. Thank you to everyone who entered a quilt in the show. Thank you for each hour put in on the show. A special thanks to each of my committee chairs. Such an outstanding job from all of you. Another special thanks to The Nine Patch and Karen Denney for creating such a beautiful donation quilt. You made it easy to sell tickets. It was incredible. Unfortunately, it was not won by me but Angela Harrison did win it. She is a quilter though she can’t attend guild due to work. But it is nice to know a quilter received it and will really appreciate it Hopefully by guild meeting we will have the final counts on raffle tickets sales and Country Store sales. I know they were good. Now we can rest and begin the fun part of next year - creating that work of art to “Color Your World With Quilts”. Thanks again! You are a wonderful group of ladies and I did enjoy working with you and getting to know so many of you. Quilt On!!!u Ileice Baker HOW IS A SHOW JUDGED Our guild has excellent workmanship skills and design abilities. We are well educated quilters. Therefore, I think it is time to share with you how a Show Judge and the Show Judging Coordinator work together in judging a show. First and foremost, the Judge is hired to award ribbons. In addition, each show might decide to request that the Judge critique all quilts. The Judge may be asked to provide a critique sheet or the Show Judging Coordinator will select the critique sheet that is to be used. The Judge might have a provision in her contract, “All ribbon decisions by the Judge are final.” Yet, the Show Judging Coordinator can request that in categories with very few quilts, all ribbons must be given (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and HM). In my experience I choose to give all ribbons as I want to encourage, not discourage quilters. I know that my critique will reflect the issues I noted with all the areas of workmanship and design. The ribbons indicate how each quilt fared given the competition within that category. Each category is (and should be) judged on its own merits or accomplishments, not by the existing show’s overall entries. For example, if there are 66 quilts in Pieced, Track Mounted Machine Quilting, and only one or two in Applique, Hand Quilted, why should the smaller category not receive a 1st and 2nd? Remember they did not ask for a limited number of competitors. Consider careful category selection as an opportunity for next year if your goal is a ribbon. I’ve done this! I want to tell you that there is no way to insure your quilt will win a ribbon, other than to become proficient in workmanship and to trust your design skills. So many times I have seen the same quilt win a 1st in one show and not take a ribbon in another. The competition changes from show to show. I think you should be proud of your quilt, enjoy seeing it hang, and know that others are appreciating your beautiful work. I also want you all to know that a Judge did not give you a ribbon, YOU earned it. And, if there were enough ribbons in every show I would honor every quilt with a ribbon! Each quilt is a work of beauty, made with love! This one is a little more modern and will give you an opportunity to use some of those wonderful bright fabrics. You, of course, can use any fabrics you wish. You just need to have lights and darks, to have a contrast so the “spokes” of the circles show. We’ll meet at the church at the same time of 12:30 after the guild meeting. Your sewing machine needs to have a variable stitch length. It’s important so that you can tear the paper off of the back of your work more easily. So, what to bring?.. Your sewing machine, fabric that has already been cut (please see the March newsletter), seam ripper, rotary cutter & small cutting board and basic sewing supplies (thread, fabric & paper scissors, etc.) Also, an iron and small ironing pad or tabletop board is very handy. A tabletop light is also nice (but not necessary) for helping you to place fabric on the paper piece. Patterns will be available for $3 to cover the cost of printing and will be offered to participants first that will be sewing in April. This pattern was first published in American Patchwork & Quilting, February 2004. EMAIL CHANGE UPCOMING PROGRAMS Karol Rank [email protected] Coming in June: Sue Nickels!
