 Review through a slide show (nearpod or power point)
 Review irony
 Read Not Waving But Drowning. Determine speakers and situations, clarify any misunderstood
words.
 Re-read the poem and examine the connotations and denotations of the figures of speech.
 Students complete analysis/evaluation questions and discuss.

 Introduce terms: simile, personification, imagery, symbolism
 Review through slide show
 Read Ex-Basketball player. Determine speaker, situation, clarify misunderstood words.
 Re-read the poem, looking for use of personification, simile. Discuss.
 Determine the use of symbolism in the poem.
 Extension: make a guess: what happened to Flick Webb to cause him to fall off?

 Discuss message: it extends beyond the situation of the poem.
