Read the passage. Then answer the questions.
Who do you know who has sideburns? Sideburns are
patches of facial hair grown on the side of the face near the
ears. They are as common as beards and mustaches. Although
men may have been wearing these side-whiskers on and off for
centuries, the name is a relatively recent one.
Side whiskers went in and out of fashion for centuries. They
were popularized anew by European soldiers during Napoleon’s
time. The style spread to the young nation of America. Look at
paintings of President Andrew Jackson or of others of his time
and you will see the style. But the facial hair was not yet called
sideburns. We can thank a Civil War general for the change.
Union General Ambrose P. Burnside’s appearance was distinguished
by long, thick side whiskers from his ears to his cheeks and linked by
a mustache. He was beardless. His style launched a trend. The term
“burnsides” was used to describe facial hair like his. About 50 years
after the war, the word got transposed. Burnsides became sideburns.
