Welcome to the Summer edition of our newsletter!
This promises to be a busy period for the Trust not only in terms of caring
for patients and delivering services but also with putting into place across
the organisation the elements of our Keogh improvement plan which we
have started to implement.
I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome the Governors you have
elected to represent your interests in the organisation. We have renewed
our commitment to improving communication with our members and all
stakeholders as part of our improvement plan. In order to do so we need
to know how we are doing and what actions we can take to be increasingly
inclusive, reflecting your views in the way we do business and care for people.
Your views are always very welcome on our services and should be addressed
to our PALS team but we also want to know how we can better engage with
you as members and would very much appreciate you getting in touch with
our membership team to share your thoughts.
I also want to thank our outgoing Chair, Hazel Harding, for her dedication to
the people of East Lancashire and her ongoing support of the organisation as
she steps out of the public eye to focus on her health and her family. We will
keep you updated on progress in our search for an outstanding individual to
lead the organisation into the future.
You may also be aware that Lynn Wissett, our Deputy Chief Executive and
Director of Clinical Care and Governance, has retired after many years of
service to this organisation and to the NHS. Her hard work and commitment
over the term of her career has had a significant influence not only on patient
care but on many colleagues across the NHS. We are now well into the
process of selecting her successor and hope to appoint in the near future.
As we go to print we are commencing a by election process to complete
the shadow Council of Governors. Please take the opportunity to either put
yourself forward for election as a Governor or cast your vote for a candidate
in your area.

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust Named
as Specialist Centre for Vascular Services
Rineke Schram, Medical Director at East Lancashire Hospitals
NHS Trust, said: “We welcome the Secretary of State for Health’s
announcement that the Trust has been named as one of three
‘centres of excellence’ for vascular services.
“We are extremely proud of the vascular services we currently offer
and the surgeons and staff who work in this department. Becoming
a specialist centre will ensure that the local population and beyond
have access improved care and treatment and the safest and best
clinical outcomes.”
Simon Hardy, Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the Trust and Vascular Clinical Lead for Cumbria and
Lancashire, added: “We are delighted that the Secretary of State has recognised the need for a network
of vascular services which will provide modern, comprehensive care 24/7 across the area.”
The Italian Job:
Martin’s Charity Cycle
Martin Hodgson, Director of Service Development
took on a charity cycle which saw him tackle the
same challenging climbs ridden by the likes of Sir
Bradley Wiggins. Martin joined five friends to ride
along the Italian Dolomite Range from Lake Como
to Treviso in six consecutive days to raise money for
SSAFA.
Commenting on the charity challenge, Martin said:
“A number of my fellow cyclists are already linked
with SSAFA, which provides lifelong support to past
and present members of our forces and their families.
This seemed to be a good opportunity to combine a
hobby with contributing to a very worthy cause.
”The team of friends headed off on 7 July 2013,
covered 750km and climbed 15,000 meters of vertical
ascent, almost twice the height of Mount Everest.
The route covered the major
climbs of the famous Giro d’Italia
professional cycling race,
includingthe Stelvio Pass.
Martin’s role as Director of Service
Development sees him heading
the planning function of the Trust,
particularly working with the local
Commissioning Groups to help
shape the future health services
of East Lancashire.
Prestigious
Accreditation for
our Radiographer
A Radiographer at the
Trust has become one of
only two people in the
country to receive a top
accreditation in her
specialism.
Rita Borgen, Consultant Radiographer within
the East Lancashire Breast Screening Service
was accredited as a Consultant Practitioner
following an extensive assessment by The
Society and College of Radiographers.
Rita said: “It was a lot of hard work but it is
great to be recognised and accepted by my
professional society as a Consultant
Radiographer.”
Dr Richard Dobrashian, Director of Breast
Screening at the Trust, said: “Rita is an asset
to the Trust and the Breast Screening Team
and I am delighted to congratulate her on this
achievement. Rita is now at the pinnacle of her
profession and this accreditation acknowledges
all the hard work and expertise she has gained
through her further training.”

Angela Graves, Heart Failure Specialist
Nurse was a key speaker at a landmark
parliamentary reception in London recently.
Angela accompanied the Pumping
Marvellous Foundation, the UK’s heart
failure charity founded in East Lancashire
by Nick Hartshorne-Evans, who hosted the
reception on Tuesday 18 June 2013 at the
Palace of Westminster.
Heart failure patients
across the UK highlighted
and discussed the clinical
and psychological impact
on patients and their
families as well as the
issue of equality of care
with MPs and members
of the Department of Health.
Angela, who is based at Accrington Victoria
Hospital, said: “I was thrilled to have the
opportunity to speak at this important
parliamentary event. I am passionate about
caring for people with heart failure and
ensuring that patients receive excellent
after-care and clinical support to help them
self-manage their conditions and ensure
their chance of being admitted to hospital
is significantly reduced.
“We’ve made real strides in East Lancashire
with our heart failure patients by working in
partnership with Pumping Marvellous and
this event gave me the opportunity to share
my passion and knowledge with key
decision makers in parliament and at the
Department of Health.”
Heart failure affects approximately 1000
people in every parliamentary constituency,
however, here in East
Lancashire that figure
may be doubled due
to the number of
people who live with
cardiovascular disease
in the area.
Patients and charity
representatives had the opportunity to
speak to more than 90 MPs and senior
members of the Department of Health
about the lack of recognition and support
for heart failure patients.
Heart failure accounts for 2% of all NHS
hospital bed days and 5% of all emergency
hospital admissions and there are up to
750,000 people who have Heart failure
in the UK.
