From the Pastor’s Desk...
It Worked Out Well . . . for
me that Mother’s Day always
falls during the Easter Season
as I would always tease my
mother that I was just going to
grab one of the flower pots
from the altar and it give it to
her for her Mother’s Day gift
and did she have a favorite
flower or color as that’s the
one I would snatch from the
altar. I always threatened to bring a half dead
Easter lily home since I knew Easter lilies were not
amongst her favorite flowers. She would, as she
did so very, very often, just look at me and sigh as
if to say, “Where did I go wrong with him?”, a question she asked herself on many occasions, both before and after my ordination. Teasing her about
not getting her a “real” Mother’s day gift was part
of our annual Mother’s Day experience, which also
included me offering to take her out to dinner, but
her refusing, saying she would prefer to stay home
because it was always so crowded if you went out
and then she would proceed to cook on Mother’s
Day as if it were any other Sunday. She was a
much more stubborn person than I am. (My sister
Regina takes after our mother!) I remember all of
that, and so many other ways that I tormented my
mother on this Mother’s Day weekend. Those of us
who no longer have our mothers with us remember
all of those good times which we shared, as well as
perhaps some of those more difficult moments
which they had to endure. To all of those mothers,
we pray a Happy Mother’s Day around God’s heavenly banquet table. To those mothers, grandmothers, step-mothers, godmothers, great-grandmothers
who are still present with us, we wish you the happiest of Mother’s Day. For all that you do, there
should be a Mother’s Day at least once a month,
but it is set-up once a year and so we take this day
above all others to show our love and our gratitude.
Speaking for sons and grandsons everywhere, there
are days when we do not show the mothers and

grandmothers out there all of the respect and love
that we should but this day gives us the opportunity
to remind you that even though we do not show it
every day as we should, our respect is real, our
gratitude is great, and our love for you is overwhelming! So, remember, even if you get a threequarters deceased Eater Lily, it carries great meaning with it. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
Our Catechetical Year for our CCD kindergarten
through eight grade students drew to a close this
past Sunday and Monday. It concluded immediately after the celebration of First Eucharist with our
second grade students – a great bang to end the
year on! Thank you to all those who worked so
hard to make our CCD program strong, especially to
our catechists, to our office aides, to our helpers
and all others whose efforts contribute to a great
endeavor, the religious formation of our young people. We will still have another week of Jesus And
Me (Children’s Liturgy of the Word) during the 9:00
a.m. and 10:45 a.m. masses. That will conclude
next Sunday, May 21. Those catechists deserve our
thanks as well, as sometime it seems that the adult
is swallowed up in a sea of young people. We are
grateful for your efforts as well. Certainly, our
thanks go out to the parents for their cooperation in
all of our religious education undertakings. You are
the first teachers of your children in the ways of the
faith and without your understanding nothing we do
would be possible. One of the things that you can
be sure of is that even though we have just now
concluded the catechetical year for CCD, planning is
underway for next year. As I always say of myself,
no rest for the wicked!
This weekend, if you are contributing to the
Trinity Dome for the Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, don’t forget to
clearly mark the envelope “Trinity Dome.” Also,
those participating in the Baby Bottle Campaign,
please return them the weekend of May 20 and 21.
Congratulations to Daniel Joseph D’Amato, to
Jayden Vincent Dillon, to Patrick Robert Floran II, to
their parents and their godparents on the occasion
of their baptisms here at Saint Charles Borromeo
this past weekend. Best wishes to all involved!!!

Can you touch a prayer?
Can you pull it close and feel its comfort?
You can if it comes as a gift in the form of a Prayer
Shawl. Prayer Shawls are simple gifts of grace from God that
are prayerfully and lovingly stitched by volunteers of St. Charles
Graceful Hands and prayed over as a reminder that God’s
promise is always with us. Shawls can be useful for: those undergoing medical procedures; as a comfort after a loss or in times of
stress; during bereavement; or for prayer or meditation. Prayer
Shawls are available to anyone free of charge. Please call the
parish office to reserve one or stop in to pick one up.

CAN’T WAIT
By this Monday at 4:45 CST, Kathy and I should be
viewing (if not one of us actually holding) the newest
member of the Kocjancic Family, Fiona. She and her
parents, JC and Nicole, are all doing well. Yes, we’ve
seen plenty of pictures, have Facetimed, seen the videos
they have sent but there is nothing like getting to cuddle
her in my arms for the first time, to actually feel her
against me.
Ever since we made the reservations back in midMarch, we’ve been getting little reminders of how much
time we have left before we get there to Austin. The first
question Kathy asked her heart doctor after surgery was
if she can still fly there. I’ve been marking the days off
my calendar until we get there. The airline has been
sending weekly reminders about how much time before
we fly out. Every new picture or video just raises our
anticipation level. And on the other side of the picture,
JC and Nicole are also excited about us getting there to
spend time with the three of them. Kathy and I can’t
wait.
But wait we must. There were and are things that we
needed to do before we made the trip to make sure it was
smooth as possible. I think we got all bases covered and
we are more than ready to make the trip.
However, there is one trip I know we all want to put
off as long as possible, the trip to our eternal home. We
want to wait for that journey, but unlike our trip to
Austin, we really don’t know when that trip is scheduled.
So, I hope we are using the time here and now getting all
those things done we need to do before we make that last
trip to ensure that the journey will be as smooth as
possible.
Clearin’ the table.

OUR TIME, OUR TALENT, & OUR TREASURE
Stewardship Thought of the Week:
“The stone which the builders rejected has become the
cornerstone.” 1 PETER 2:7
Everyone is given unique gifts. Many people are able to
recognize their talents and abilities, but there are many
people who are unsure of their gifts. This may make them
feel worthless. If you know someone who is struggling
for a direction in life, give them a little encouragement.
Help them discern how they might use their skills. No gift
is too small or insignificant.

parish office. Winners will be drawn Saturday, May 27, 2017.
Proceeds benefit our own local council and Ohio K of C charities.
Last year we were able to donate nearly $16,000 to various charities, most locally, from your support of our various campaigns
such as this raffle.
Just a reminder to those who took home
a baby bottle following the Masses two
weeks ago. Bottles will be collected at
all the Masses the weekend of May 20
and 21. Your donation supports the work
of Men and Women United for Life, a prolife ministry which promotes respect for
life at all stages and encourages the virtue of chastity
through prayer, education, and outreach. In addition to
offering retreats, presentations, and evenings of reflection for Catholic high schools and youth ministry groups,
Men and Women United for Life sponsors nationally
known speakers for diocesan-wide events and provides
free resources including pamphlets, books, CDs, DVDs,
and sacramentals to parents, teachers, youth ministers,
and teens alike. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

KRISTA’S STORY
The next two steps in RCIA are the Rite of Sending, followed by the Rite of Election. The Rite of Sending
and the Rite of Election normally take place the first Sunday of Lent. Lent serves as a time of spiritual preparation for the candidates and catechumens.
During the Rite of Sending the candidates and catechumens stand before the parish and acknowledge
their desire to join the Church, and the parish community expresses its approval. Upon approval, the candidates and catechumens sign their name in the parish’s Book of the Elect. After signing, the parish officially
sends them and the Book of the Elect to the Bishop for the Rite of Election.
The Rite of Sending had duel significance for Krista. Along with signing the book herself, her daughter
Ella, signed her name in the school’s book a few weeks prior to signify to the students, their own intentions
of making their First Communion.
“When my daughter went up to sign her name in the book, I was overjoyed. She is just naturally doing it;
she’s being raised in the Catholic faith. I’m happy for her because she is in awe of it all. Then I have to hold
back my own emotions and my feelings, because I’m her. I’m that little girl. I’m experiencing this for the first
time like she is.” Krista wipes tears from her eyes and continues, “for the first time, it’s my choice. It’s my
freedom.”
The Rite of Election is a liturgical rite, which occurs at St. Columba Cathedral. During the Rite of Election,
the candidates and catechumens express their desire to join the Church. The Church ratifies their readiness
to receive the Sacraments of Initiation, and the catechumens and the candidates, now called elect, express
their will to receive these sacraments. Each parish brings up their signed papers to the bishop to be put into
a Diocesan Book of the Elect.
During the Rite of Election, Krista became extremely emotional. “A wave of emotion came over me. To
hear the Bishop Murry say to us, that Christ accepts our judgment and calls us to the Easter Sacraments,
that’s what I’ve waited to hear my entire life. Everything just became real. I can’t wait feel whole.”
(To be continued...)
Top Left: Krista witnesses her daughter, Ella, sign the St. Charles School book signifying her intentions to receive First Communion.
Above: Krista signs her name in the parish’s Book of Elect during the Rite of Sending.
Top Right: Overcome with emotion, Krista wipes away tears as Bishop Murry says a
prayer for all the Catechumens.
Bottom Left: Deacon Paul carries the Catechumen’s Book of Elect down the aisle of
St. Columba Cathedral signifying their commitment to join the Catholic faith.
Bottom Right: Krista gives the Catechumens’ signed paper to Bishop Murry during
the Rite of Election.
