Pharmacy team wins title in national business plan competition
I Am Pharmacy... I Am ISU!
On the cover...
A huge congratulations goes out to our students who recently won the National Good Neighbor Pharmacy
NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition.
About 16 years ago, the William M. Eames Business Scholars Program was established with the help of
a generous alum from the class of 1957. Since then, with the help of Dr. Kerry Casperson, we have been
working to establish a joint PharmD/MBA program. Part of this program has involved competing in the
National NCPA competition. This year, our students were chosen out of 35 teams that submitted business plans to compete in Nashville for the national title. Four P3’s, Wesston Faux, Nick Beebe, Tyler
Hemsley and Alan Pannier, presented their plan and were awarded the national title.
We celebrate their hard work and how well they have represented ISU College of Pharmacy.
Dean’s Message
I AM PHARMACY... I AM ISU
I am so proud to be a part of this college. Our current students continue to compete and be recognized
at the national level, and you, our alumni, continue to represent us with your outstanding success and
accomplishments.
We have a continued legacy of excellence that spans generations. In this year’s group of P1s, we have three third generation College of
Pharmacy students. We also have a recent graduate whose great grandfather was an alumnus. It is exciting to think that over 93 years
the College of Pharmacy has become a multi-generational family. As I meet with alumni, I am continually reminded of how the family
of ISU College of Pharmacy is a community of professionals that have caring in common.
In this Bulletin, enjoy reading about our Associate Dean, Cathy Cashmore, and how her efforts to create opportunities for our students
in nuclear pharmacy resulted in a business venture. Explore the stories of two of our Alumni: Brookie Swallow, a retired pharmacist
and author, and Bill Wolfe, a “not so traditional” pharmacist. Take a look through the photos of our students and their activities, including the White Coat Ceremony welcoming the class of 2015 and graduation of the class of 2011 with students receiving their doctoral
hoods.
The time you spent here at ISU is important to us. You have made us who we are and we are proud to be associated with you. There are
many ways to describe the pharmacists who have graduated from our College. Whether you are retired, a researcher, a retail pharmacist
or a business owner, all of you are pharmacists and all of you are ISU. As the profession of pharmacy changes and you continue in your
career, I hope you will stay connected to ISU College of Pharmacy.
You will always be a part of our family.

Some Like It “Hot”
Cathy Cashmore
and Her Nuclear Pharmacy
Graduating from the ISU College of
Pharmacy in 1993, Cathy Cashmore never
expected to be running a nuclear pharmacy.
However, standing in the lab at Advanced
Isotopes of Idaho surrounded by syringe
pigs, lead lined shielding, and Geiger counters, “Here I am,” she says.
After graduation, Cathy stayed in Pocatello, eventually becoming Associate
Dean of the College. After a six-month
sabbatical to pursue a long-time interest in
nuclear pharmacy, she came back to provide students with an opportunity to learn
nuclear pharmacy, and it became a business.
She is now pharmacist-in-charge and
part owner with Dr. Nicole Chopski at Advanced Isotopes of Idaho
in Chubbuck. It is one of the few
independent nuclear pharmacies in
the country. Opening in February,
2006, “it provides all of the radiopharmaceuticals for nuclear medicine facilities from Logan, Utah
in the south, Pocatello and Idaho
Falls locally,
as far north as
Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and as far west
as Minidoka and Cassia” says Cathy.
The vast majority of
all the doses that the
pharmacy provides are
for medical diagnostic
testing, although the
pharmacy does provide I-131 and Y-90
doses for treatment
of non-Hodgkin
lymphoma, thyroid cancer and
hyperthyroidism.
Recently, the pharmacy also began treating felines with hyperthyroidism. Veterinarian Dr. Walter Rowntree was riding his
bike in the area and noticed the Advanced
Isotopes of Idaho sign. He stopped in and
asked if they could supply I-131 and Y-90.
Ever since, Dr. Rowntree has offered it as
a treatment option for cats with hyperthyroidism. According to Cathy, the cats are

brought in on a Friday, receive their
injection and are isolated for three
days because they are “hot” with radiation.
“Radioactive iodine has always
been the gold standard treatment for
this disease,” says Rowntree. “In the
past, a cat owner would have to travel
to Utah, Washington or Colorado for
the treatment.” According to Rowntree, I-131 treatment is also safe for
the cat, and the prognosis is excellent. The two other treatment options are surgery or 2 to 3 doses of
medication every day. So far, three
6
cats have been treated with I-131
through the partnership, and “so far,
all worked beautifully as expected,”
says Rowntree. “We are grateful to
Cathy for being willing to help.”
Advanced Isotopes of Idaho has
also been a great opportunity for
students to learn radiopharmacy.
The COP not only offers an elective
in nuclear pharmacy but a rotation
opportunity for P4’s through the lab.
“After a single rotation, students earn
approximately half of their hours to
become an ANP (Authorized Nuclear
Pharmacist),” says Cathy.
In fact, Micah Rydman, one of
Cathy’s first students at Advanced
Isotopes, opted to complete his certification in nuclear pharmacy and began work after graduation at Cardinal
Nuclear in Boise, Idaho. He quickly
rose to manager and is currently a
preceptor offering IPPE and APPE
opportunities for pharmacy students.
Congratulations to the class of
2011
Following a tradition of excellence in Pharmacy education, on May 6, 2011,
the Idaho State University College of Pharmacy awarded 67 degrees,
including 59 PharmDs, 8 nontraditional PharmD degrees and 7 Masters degrees.

Looking to the Past; Inspiring Our Future
Brookie Condie Swallow, alumna 1950
Raised during the Great Depression, the
daughter of a World War I veteran and a
teenager during World War II – the life,
perspective and trajectory of the young
Brookie Condie Swallow were greatly influenced by the political, economic and social
conditions of her youth. In the forward of
her upcoming historical novel, Standing
Firm, Ms. Swallow describes:
‘I was required in the first grade of school
to memorize the 23rd Psalm and the short
version of the Ten Commandments … We
were taught to be polite and respectful
of our parents, teachers, neighbors, and
elderly people, and to show reverence for
God and Country …’
Brookie and
Grover Swallow
22
22
It all began in a meeting
with her high school counselor at Twin Falls High
School in the mid-1940s, a
time when young girls did
not often pursue education beyond a high school
diploma. The advice from
her high school counselor
was to consider a career in
pharmacy - the rest is history. A young woman ahead
of her time, Brookie Condie
thoughtfully planned for
college and a career that
would align with her family
values. She aspired to be a
professional and sought an
occupation that would afford
her the flexibility to devote
quality time and attention to
a future husband and family,
yet still allow her to realize
her personal, intellectual and
professional capacity.
With a love for chemistry
and math, Brookie set out for
ISU’s COP in 1946. Though
she was often the only female in class, and only 1 of 4 women in
her graduating class, Brookie graduated
with high honors in 1950. During her time
at school, she met and married schoolmate Grover Swallow (Class of ’49). After
graduation, Brookie and Grover acquired,
co-owned and operated multiple drug
stores, Swallow Drugs. Not only did
Brookie work as a pharmacist in one of
the family stores, but she served as the
bookkeeper for the family operations
while raising 10 (yes, TEN!) children.
When asked what significant
changes in the pharmacy profession
she experienced during her career, she
pointedly answered, “The explosion of
antibiotics on the market.”
An experienced business woman,
having owned and operated four phar-
macies during her career,
she offered this advice to
young pharmacists aspiring to own their own
pharmacies, “Looking
at today’s economy you
better have your books
in order. To have your
own independent store
anymore – it just doesn’t
seem practical. If you are
going to do it – go where
there isn’t any competition.” Words of wisdom
from a woman of the
“Greatest Generation.”
Pioneer female pharmacist and proprietor
and author, Brookie Condie Swallow is not
only an extremely successful Idaho State
University College of Pharmacy alum, but
a wife, mother and savvy business woman,
just as she had planned!

Bill came to ISU College of Pharmacy
almost on a whim. Originally from Turlock, wind chill of 5 below zero.
John Bergen served as Dean from 1963California, he had been attending school

at Modesto Junior College studying “whatlife at the COP. “Dean Bergen was an ab-
solute prince and a genius,” says Bill. “He
was a gifted instructor and just a nice guy.
He would work to talk to you on a level you
could understand; he would try hard to get
along with students.”
As members of Phi Delta Chi, Bill and his
friends would end the week at Buddy’s restaurant with a pitcher of beer. “Fortunately
we were all in the same boat; Buddy’s was
just a short walk down the street, so we
spent a lot of time there,” said Stan.
Stan remembers Bill as being like “The
Fonz” who always had a date and a nice
car. Bill is known for the 1941 Merc that
he restored and was featured in the car
magazine, Car Kulture Deluxe, but being a
pharmacist has been good to Bill. Over the
years he enjoyed playing the market, being
a business man and owning a pharmacy.
Still the restless spirit, Bill has trouble staying in one spot for too long.
Bill didn’t marry until he was 50 years
old. And even then, he and his wife Jennifer didn’t want a traditional wedding.
Instead, they got married in Las Vegas on
the set of the Starship Enterprise from the
Star Trek TV series. Two Klingons and 2
Ferengies, attended the wedding.

Department of Pharmacy Practice and
Administrative Sciences
The Department of
Pharmacy
Practice and
Administrative Sciences
continues
its work in
support of
Dr. Christopher Owens
the mission
of the College of Pharmacy in the areas of
teaching, scholarship, and clinical and professional service. In addition to our usual
duties, many of the department’s faculty
also played key roles in the successful reaccreditation of the Doctor of Pharmacy
program in spring 2011. Of special note was
Dr. Vaughn Culbertson, who chaired the self
study committee and was instrumental in
preparing the College’s self-study document
for the accreditation site team visit, which
described the curriculum, assessment tools,
outcome measures, physical facilities, and
cataloged faculty research and accomplishments. Many other faculty members in the
department devoted hundreds of hours to
the preparation of the self-study and participated in the site team visit, providing
important information for the accreditation
team.
The spring of 2011 saw a change in both
content and delivery of the Biological Basis
of Drug Actions course for first-year pharmacy students. By providing an overview
of the basic clinical pharmacology of major
drug classes by Pharmacy Practice faculty,
this course now provides a more clinicallyfocused overview that will better prepare
students for later modular coursework. In
addition, many of the lectures were videorecorded for use by other health profession students in nursing, dental hygiene,
and physical therapy. This represented an
important step in inter-professional educational collaboration in the Division of Health
Sciences.
In the area of clinical service, our faculty
members were responsible for thousands
of patient contact hours this year, providing
drug therapy consultations and recommendations to providers to improve the care
of patients throughout Idaho. Dr. Michelle
Steed was especially busy in this regard,
providing services for the Dirne Clinic and
the Coeur d’Alene VA Clinic as well. She was
praised by the VA Medical Director for providing outstanding patient care and starting
a pharmacist-run metabolic clinic for some
of the VA’s most challenging patients. Also of
note, Glenda Carr was named a Healthcare
Hero for 2010 for her work at Terry Reilly
Health Services and as a coordinator of several Meridian-based community outreach
programs.
Scholarly activity is always a high priority
and in 2010-2011 the department presented dozens of posters highlighting their
clinical, research, and teaching activities at
state and national meetings, including the
Western Institute of Nursing, Idaho Association of Physician Assistants, Idaho Society
of Health-System Pharmacists, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and the
Infectious Diseases Society of America. Our
faculty also contributed several publications
to the medical and pharmacy literature
including the Journal of Hospital Medicine,
Annals of Clinical Psychiatry, Annals of Pharmacotherapy, and American Health and Drug
Benefits. Several of our faculty were also
awarded Division of Health Sciences grants
of up to $10,000. Dr. Cara Liday received
$60,000 from the PacificSource Community
Healthcare Excellence Program to promote
a cardiometabolic risk reduction clinic, and
Dr. Tracy Pettinger was co-principal investigator in SAVOR-TIMI clinical trial to assess
vascular outcomes in diabetic patients taking the drug saxtigliptin.

Department of Biomedical
and Pharmaceutical Sciences
A few years
ago the Department of
Pharmaceutical Sciences
was renamed
the Department of
Dr. Dana Deitrich
Biomedical
and Pharmaceutical Sciences (BPSCI).
This was done to follow the national
trend of expanding the name to reflect
that the department’s research activities were broader than the traditional
pharmaceutical sciences.
This change was a timely move since
the College of Pharmacy has become
part of the Division of Health Sciences
(DHS). BPSCI now represents the
only department tin the DHS that has
traditional research laboratory facilities. The accreditations of some of the
19 health professional programs in
the DHS requires a graduate research
30
program for maintaining accreditation.
This offers BPSCI a unique opportunity
to become a home to research endeavors not historically found in a pharmaceutical sciences department. For
example, we have an evolving relationship with the Medical Laboratory Sciences Program (MLS, formerly Clinical
Laboratory Sciences) through which
we are providing instructional space
and potentially collaborative research
space.
The MLS program interfaces nicely
with the professional pharmacy program since the pharmacy students
are responsible for understanding
and interpreting clinical data. All this
does not mean that we will neglect our
roots of pharmaceutical research. For
example, some of the most exciting
research in drug development is being
performed by individuals trained as
chemists who choose to work in biological systems.
To meet these changes we are hiring new faculty members with primary
training in chemistry and medicinal
chemistry to bring us into the world of
proteomics and reverse drug design.
We anticipate strengthening our relationship with the Department of Chemistry at ISU in these endeavors.
The future of BPSCI is to become a
home to a diverse and collaborative
cohort of faculty members who provide instructional expertise across the
College of Pharmacy and the DHS and
who possess the scientific credentials
to aggressively seek and be awarded
competitive extramural funding from
traditional and non-traditional research funding agencies.
Our reinvention of who we are as a
department will occur in both Pocatello
and Meridian, where we expect to have
at least two research faculty members
by mid-year 2012.

Student Outreach Programs at ISU College of Pharmacy
Our students deliver patient care to 4,000 people every year through health screenings and immunizations. Through all community
education efforts over 120,000 people are reached annually. Your donations help keep these student programs alive. Please send your
donation to the College of Pharmacy, 921 So. 8th Ave. Stop 8288, Pocatello, ID 83209-8288. Thank You!
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the cause of death in 1 out of every 3
Americans. Through public awareness, community outreach, and patientspecific education on cardiovascular risk factors, student pharmacists
empower patients to take control of their health and prevent cardiovascular
disease before it starts.
Pharmacists and student pharmacists have a major role to play in ensuring
higher immunization rates, and in decreasing vaccine-preventable disease.
Through participation in this project, student pharmacists are providing
the pharmacy profession with an excellent resource in the fight against
the growing incidence, morbidity, and mortality associated with vaccine
preventable diseases.
Prescription medication abuse is the second leading cause of accidental
death in the United States. More Americans abuse prescription medications than cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, and inhalants combined, and
an astounding one in five teens abuses a prescription drug at least once
in their lifetime. Generation Rx is an educational program that increases
public awareness of prescription medication abuse and encourages health
care providers, community leaders, parents, teens, and college students to
actively work to prevent abuse.
Currently, 1 in 4 people in the United States has diabetes, has a family member with the disease, or will develop the disease. By directly
involving pharmacists and student pharmacists in diabetes management and screening, we hope to help identify those who may not have
been identified in the past, help patients manage their diabetes, and
ultimately prevent long-term complications of the disease.
During Poison Prevention week every March, pharmacy students go to
local elementary schools and teach the younger students about pharmacists and what we do, what poisons are, where they can be found,
and what to do in case a poisoning occurs. This organization educates
the children in our community and shows they can make a difference.
Ultimately the goal of the Meth Awareness project is aimed at improving the understanding about the dangers of methamphetamine. Students involved in Operation Meth Awareness visit local high schools
and middle schools giving presentations to further knowledge of the
myriad physiological, psychological, and social dangers this drug can
have for its users.
