ž  Compliment
– the other 6 notes NOT being
used as part of the chosen hexachord.
ž  ‘Klangfarbenmelodie’ – the German word for
‘tone colour melody’. This refers to the
importance of timbre in Expressionist music
and is the word used to describe melodic
fragments passed around different
instruments.
ž  Structure – free rondo form.
ž  In
pairs, make up a short piece using the
basic hexachord from ‘Peripetie’:
C-Bb-E-F-C#-A
and the compliment of this hexachord (what
is this made up of?):
D-D#-F#-G-G#-B
ž  Extension: try to use Klangfarbenmelodie, by
making up melodic fragments and focusing
on timbre/different sounds.
ž  Work
in groups of 3 or 4. Together, come up with
a paragraph on the heading (from those below)
that your teacher gives you. You can use the
textbook for help.
