Master Arizona’s 15 most challenging mathematics skills with
SkillBridge. With lesson topics chosen based on actual state test
data, SkillBridge offers help in the skills that truly are the most
troublesome. As students move through each lesson, they are
equipped with guidance and connections that allow them to show
independent skill mastery by the end of the lesson. Arizona
references in each lesson offer a unique and familiar
point of entry into difficult skills.

Place Value
AZ
Place value tells you about the value of each
digit in a number.
You can show a number in many ways.
1) S
tandard form is the way you usually write
a number.
Arizona became a state in
1912. The number 1,912 has
a 1 in the thousands place,
a 9 in the hundreds place, a
1 in the tens place, and a 2 in
the ones place.
3,513
2) E
xpanded form shows the value of each digit
in a number.
3,000 1 500 1 10 1 3
3) Word form shows the number with words.
three thousand five hundred thirteen
one ten

Example 1
How many tens and ones are in the
number 53? Use place-value blocks.
There are 5 tens and 3 ones in the number 53.
Build A Bridge 1
How many ones are the
same as 1 ten?

You can also use blocks to show place value.
You can show that 10 ones make 1 ten, 10 tens make 1 hundred, 10 hundreds
make 1 thousand, and 10 thousands make 1 ten thousand.

The next part is four hundred. This means 400.
The last part is seventy. This means 70.
To show the number in expanded form, write
the values together in an addition sentence.
