Sandra comes to us from the great state of Alabama! She is the Program Coordinator for Physical
Education Teacher Certification at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Sandra has been a
National Convention Presenter and was named Southern District Teacher of the Year in 2003. Sandra
returns to Montana this year to present on Elementary PE Activities and bringing Movement to the
classroom. She is also one of our key presenters for our “150 Track” and our Advocacy Day July 31.
Sunday, July 31—10:00-10:45--Advocacy Session “Developing Advocacy Talent in Your State”-Sunnyside Elementary.
Session #1: Monday, Aug. 1—1:30-2:30—“Stop Stealing the JOY in Physical Education: Use
Appropriate Practices in Elementary Physical Education Classes”--Main Gym
This session includes the opportunity to participate and discuss practices that occur in elementary
physical education classes. The discussion will lead to a demonstration of more appropriate practices
that address skill and fitness development of students.
Session #2: Monday, Aug. 1—2:40-3:40--”Integrating Academic Subjects Into Physical
Education”--Classroom 505.
This session will provide an overview of the physical education portion of a textbook for elementary
teachers. The book discusses how to integrate academic subjects with physical education.
Session #3: Tuesday, Aug. 2—8:30-9:30--”Elementary Physical Education: The Cornerstone of
Academic Learning—Main Gym
This session includes activity ideas that integrate Mathematics, Science, History and English Language
Arts standards with physical education standards.
CARLY WRIGHT
Carly is the Senior Manager of Advocacy for SHAPE America. Carly works on federal, state and local
initiatives related to improving, implementing and assessing school health and physical education
programs and policies in schools. Carly is an Advocacy guru and will be presenting at our Advocacy
Day on July 31 as well as presenting a session on the new Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and
how Health & Physical Education are affected by this new law.

The new federal education legislation, Every Student Succeeds Act, includes Health & Physical
Education as part of a student's well-rounded education. Learn what this means for your program and
your students and what you can do to make an impact in your state and school district.
SHELLY ELLIS
Shelly Ellis, from the great state of Washington, has been a teacher for 20 years and has taught at every
level. She is currently teaching 6-7 grade P.E. & Health at University Prep in Seattle. Shelly was
named Washington State TOY in 2012 and Northwest District TOY in 2013. In 2015 Shelly was
chosen as the National Middle School PE Teacher of the Year! Shelly wants her students to see the
value of becoming lifelong movers and positive impacts in their communities.
Session #1: Monday, Aug. 1—8:30-9:30—Untraditional Lead Up Games to Traditional Sport—
Main Gym
In this session participants will walk away with some lead up games using the skills needed for some
traditional sports. Sports including: Ultimate Frisbee, Socer, Lacrosse, Softball, Cricket and Volleyball.
Meeting National Standards 1, 2, and 4; Games such as: Sepak Takraw, KanJam, Grab Ball, Bound
Ball, Goala, and Wamba ball.
Session #2: Monday, Aug. 1—2:40-3:40—HPE: Fitness Warm Ups & The Amazing Race—
Outside
In this session participants will experience another way to add cross-curricular material in a physical
education setting. It is a great formative assessment, as well as another way to practice skill and health
related components of fitness. Meeting National Standards 1, 2, and 4.
Session #3: Tuesday, Aug. 2—8:30-9:30—Kicked Out of the Gym? No Problem!--Classroom 505
In this session, you will learn activities you can do in a classroom when you don't have a gym to use.
Activities such as Nutrition T/F, Fish Bowl, Memory, Kahoot and more. Meeting National Standards 3,
4, and 5.
Session #4: Tuesday, Aug. 2—1:10-2:15—Cooperative Warm Ups and Quick Hits—Main Gym
This session will give you a ton of ideas on how to incorporate some fun, cooperative warms ups tht
work on skills, team work, health and skill related components of fitness and communication. Meeting
National Standards 2, 3, 4, 5.
AMANDA FERDERER
Amanda Ferderer is a Health & Physical Education teacher here at CMR High School. She is an
innovative, motivated professional. She was awarded the Montana High School Health & PE Teacher
of the year in 2015. Amanda has been a member of our SHAPE Montana board “Great Falls Edition”
for the last two years and has been instrumental in the success of our conventions.
Session #1: Monday, Aug. 1—1:30-2:30—Innovative Strategies for Teaching Health Education-Classroom 504
Teachers will walk away with project-based ideas they can utilize in their classrooms as well as
assessment tools. Teachers will also learn about online tools/websites they can use to actively engage
students in the classroom. There will also be exposure to Apps that can be used to enhance a Health &
Physical Education program.
MICHAEL CUMMINGS
Michael is a Middle School teacher from Idaho. He was named the Idaho Middle School Teacher of
the Year for 2015. Michael will teach us how to bring Parkour to our classes. Michael has presented at
the national convention which is where we saw him and knew he had to come to Montana!
Session #1: Monday, Aug. 1—11:00-12:00—Parkour, Innovative Curriculum--Main Gym
In this session you will learn an educational understanding of Parkour. Safety will be discussed and
demonstration of Parkour techniques with participation will be included.
Session #2: Monday, Aug. 1—4:00-5:00—Parkour Breakout Session—Outside
Come practice what you've learned out in the real world!
Session #3: Tuesday, Aug. 2—7:30-8:30—Educational Gymnastics/Parkour--Main Gym
Add to your knowledge of Gymnastics/Parkour. Learn how to integrate these activities into your
classes. All of Michael's sessions tie together from educational goals to assessment ideas.
MICHELLE PETERSON
Michelle is an Elementary Physical Education teacher in Great Falls at Sunnyside Elementary.
She is Past President of Shape Montana. She also serves as President of Cruise 4 Kids, an organization
that raises money to purchase bikes for 3 rd graders in Great Falls. Michelle was named Montana
Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 2014. In her spare time, she is most comfortable
outdoors and enjoys spending time in her kayak.
Session: Monday, Aug. 1—4:00-5:00--Kayaking Break Out Session--Staybridge Suites, Dock
Area.
During this session Michelle will discuss safety, different kinds of kayaks and how to get the most out
of your kayaking experience. She will also discuss how to make kayaking a great cross training
activity. Participants should know how to swim!!
TARA MEASURE
Tara is an HPE Teacher in Kalispell at the K-8 West Valley School. She is a member of the Shape
Montana Board and is a fitness instructor in Kalispell teaching Zumba, Cardio Boxing and Cross
Training.
Session #1: Monday, Aug. 1—2:40-3:40—Foam Rolling, Total Body Benefits—Main Gym
Learn how to use foam rollers as a training tool in your middle and high school physical education
classes.
Session #2: Tuesday, Aug. 2—10:30-11:30—Exciting, Fun & Engaging Dances—Dance Room
Learn some fun, exciting dances to teach this year in school! Tara will break down the dances so that
you can easily implement them with your classes. She will also address those shy, reluctant kids (and
teachers!) to help them open up and enjoy dance.
CATHY FISCHER
Cathy Fischer is a Middle School Teacher at Meadow Hill Middle School in Missoula. Cathy was
named Montana Middle School PE Teacher of the Year in 2003 and Northwest District TOY in 2004.
She has served as President of SHAPE Montana (twice!) and also the Northwest District and currently
serves as the Northwest District Awards Chair. Cathy was Co-Convention Manager for the National
Convention in Seattle in 2015. She won't go away (Cathy's words!!) so SHAPE Montana is gracious
enough each year to let her ramble on about something; the last two years on assessment topics.
Session: Tuesday, Aug. 2—9:30-10:30—Assess This—Take 2--Classroom 504
In this session teachers will reconsider advantages of standards-based grading in part through
examination of SHAPE America standards. Teachers will be learn how to write learning targets and get
assessment ideas.
SUSAN COURT
Susan comes to us from the Montana Office of Public Instruction. She has been our liaison for Health
& Physical Education and we couldn't find a better champion at the state level. Susan has been an
HIV/STD Instructor for many years and will share the latest information with session attendees.
Session: Monday, Aug. 1—11:00-12:00—Montana Teens-STD and Pregnancy—Classroom 504
Current statistics from the DPHHS regarding unintended pregnancy rates among teens, STD and HIV
will be presented. Lesson plans for use with 7-12 students on the topics of HIV, STD, and pregnancy
prevention will be demonstrated.
SCOTT FLATLIP
Scott is a student at MSU in Health Enhancement K-12. He is an Apsaalooke' (Crow) who grew up on
the Crow reservation in Pryor, Montana. He is father to three wonderful children. He and his wife
Sloane and the family live in Bozeman. Scott is an avid runner and so far this year has finished the Big
Horn Mountain 50k, the Missoula Marathon and has plans to run The Rut Mountain 28k in Big Sky.
Session: Tuesday, Aug. 2—10:30-11:30—Fitbits, Counting The Steps—Main Gym
In this session Scott will share his undergraduate research on how he used Fitbit Zips to record steps
during several dance units and which promoted the most step usage. He will also explain the step-bystep process he plans to use as a future health enhancement teacher to help students gain more steps per
unit. Scott will share the challenges he faced each day and how he overcame and resolved these issues.
PAULA BAKER
Paula Baker is the Montana Youth Market Director for the American Heart Association. We know her
more affectionately as “The Jump Lady”. Paula is the person responsible for making our Jump Rope
and Hoops for Heart programs successful. Come learn about how to start the program, how to improve
the program and how to enjoy both! Grant opportunities will be discussed as well as sharing of success
stories.
Session #1: Monday, Aug. 1—11:00-12::00—The Heartiest Healthiest Program You've Ever
Seen—Cafeteria
Come learn about how to start your Jump/Hoops for Heart program, how to improve your program and
how to enjoy doing both! Grant opportunities will be discussed as well as sharing of success stories
from experienced coordinators. Ideas on how to encourage administration to support this program will
also be shared.

REG HAGEMAN
Reg is a Health & Physical Education teacher in Helena at Helena Capital High School. Reg has been
a member of the SHAPE Montana board since 2012 serving as Chair of the Political Action/Advocacy
Committee. Reg has worked tirelessly to develop relationships at the state level to make sure that
SHAPE Montana, and consequently all Health & PE Teachers in Montana, have a voice with our state
leaders.
Session #1: Monday, Aug. 1—11:00-12:00—Online Physical Education Network (OPEN)-Classroom 505
OPEN is a free curriculum that offers educators free resources that come in PDF and WORD. The
OPEN Curriculum can be implemented by the classroom teacher to help them deliver high quality
Physical Education.
Session #2: Tuesday, Aug. 2—9:30-10:30—150 Implementation—Classroom 505
As part of our “150 minutes per week for Elementary” Program, Reg will lead a roundtable discussion
concerning the best practices in PE. SHAPE Montana Board members, Teachers of the Year will be
involved. Come share your best ideas!
JULIE SMITH
Julie grew up near Park City, Utah the daughter of a state park ranger. The family spent many happy
years swimming, hiking and fishing out their back door. Growing up with an active family gave her a
deep passion for living an active lifestyle. Julie earned her degree from MSU in K-12 Health
Enhancement and completed her Masters in Curriculum & Instruction from MSU in 2015. She has
been an elementary PE teacher for 7 years at Emily Dickinson Elementary in Bozeman. Her
professional project focused on students with disabilities in Physical Education.
Session #1: Monday, Aug. 1—2:40-3:40—Sport Education: The Julie Smith Version—
Classroom 504
Based on Daryl Siedentop's Sport Education Curriculum model, this session will provide information
about an alternative way to deliver Health Enhancement content. Sport Education is a curriculum
model in which sports and games are taught through seasons instead of units. Students spend a longer
amount of time in each sport which enables them to become proficient at movement skills and gain a
deeper understanding of the rules and culture surrounding the sport. Julie has been using this model in
her 4th and 5th grade classes.
Session #2: Tuesday, Aug. 2—9:30-10:30—Movement is for EVERYbody—Main Gym
Learn how to create a physical education environment where students with varying abilities can be
successful. Discuss strategies for inclusion in regular physical education settings. Discuss ideas to
include paraprofessionals in the learning and developmental process. Explore how to design a lesson
that focuses on practice and progression,, but has the ability to hold the attention span of even the
squirmiest students. Examine ways to adapt a curriculum to meet the varying physical and
developmental needs of special populations in your school.
PAT STEWART
Pat Stewart is a program consultant for The Children's Health Market, publishers of The Great Body
Shop Health Curriculum. Prior to consulting, Pat was a program director for the South Dakota and
Idaho Departments of Education in Coordinated School Health. She began her career as a Health &
Physical Education teacher in South Dakota at the Secondary Level.
Session: Tuesday, Aug. 2—8:30-9:30—Critical Thinking Skills: Practice = Proficiency—
Classroom 504
Critical thinking skills are essential for college and career readiness and life-long achievement. We use
these skills to make comparisons, predictions, decisions and to set goals to stay healthy. This session
will be an interactive session which will showcase critical thinking lessons (K-8 th grade) which you can
start using immediately.
DENISE ZIMMER
Denise Zimmer is a Registered Dietitian and the Montana Consultant for Fuel Up To Play 60. She also
works for Montana Team Nutrition as a Nutrition Education Consultant and helped develop the K-5
Nutrition Curriculum, “Eat Smart Be Smart”. Denise has also served as School Wellness Coordinator.
Session: Tuesday, Aug. 2—10:30-11:30—Fuel Up To Play, Make an Impact on Your School—
Classroom 505
Have you heard about Fuel Up to Play 60 and wondered how to get it started in your school We are the
largest in-school nutrition and physical activity wellness program. We are sponsored by the NFL and
the National Dairy Council. Students team up with adults and are empowered to take charge to create a
healthier school environment. Our FREE program offers resources and funding opportunities to help
schools make healthy eating and physical activity a priority.
BRANDI DAW
Brandi Dawn is Community Outreach Coordinator for the Behavioral Health Center in Idaho Falls, ID.
She is representing The Jason Foundation. Brandi's passion is providing knowledge to communities
regarding Youth Suicide Prevention. Using resources from The Jason Foundation she brings clarity to
this very serious issue. Brandi is also a Board Member of the Suicide Prevention Action Network in
Idaho.
Session: Tuesday, Aug. 2—9:30-10:30—Youth Suicide Prevention, The Jason Foundation—
Dance Room
In this session, participants will learn warning signs to recognize in youth struggling with suicidal
issues. Mobile tools and resources for help, teacher curriculum with teacher manual will be available
for Free.
SUSAN CARNEY
Susan Carney is a Health & Physical Education teacher in Arlee, Montana on the Flathead Indian
Reservation. Susan was the Shape Montana Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year 2015.
Session: Monday, Aug. 1—1:30-2:30—Native American Dances, Traditions & History—
Cafeteria
In this session you will develop an understanding of Pow Wow Dancing and the cultural history of each
dance. You will learn the difference between Traditional Jingle and Contemporary and which dances
you are allowed to participate in. Susan will help you develop basic footwork. You will learn how a
dancer is honored.
RYAN SMITH
Ryan Smith has been the owner of Big Sky CrossFit in Great Falls for the last 5 years. Ryan has his
Level 1 CrossFit certification with specialty courses in CrossFit Kids. Ryan is currently working on a
Youth CrossFit Event to be held in Great Falls in September called “Fitness in the Falls”.
Session: Tuesday, Aug. 2—1:10-2:15--CrossFit Kids—Outside
CrossFit Kids is a method of teaching children ages 3-18. It emphasizes good movement mechanics
throughout childhood and adolescence. Research has indicated thath children who exercise have better
cognitive function which can have a positive impact on academic success. CrossFit Kids is Big fun for
all ages and provides an active alternative to sedentary life styles. CrossFit Kids is designed to be
inexpensive and requires little or no equipment allowing a wide array of socioeconomic groups to have
an opportunity to be physically fit. CrossFit Kids programs can be found in over 1,800 gyms and more
than 1,000 schools worldwide. Come to the session and see what you may be able to implement into
your program!
