Beauty and the Beast Character Descriptions Belle She is a vibrant, intelligent, young beauty who wants more out of life than an ordinary existence. She is a lovely freethinker who likes to read and go on adventures within her own imagination. She is not shy and is not afraid to speak her mind, especially in tight situations. She is very compassionate and takes care of those in need. She can be stubborn and always tries to protect people she truly loves. She's also very patient towards others. She is a true dreamer and a lover of fantasy and adventure. The most pronounced is her love of books, excitement, and knowledge. Belle also does not care about appearances, whether they pertain to herself or anyone else. This is highly ironic, considering she is seen as the most beautiful woman in her village. Belle grows to see the Beast for who he is on the inside, learns to love him, and her love turns him back into a prince. Belle is the original fairy tale heroine–kind, gentle and beautiful–but with an important 21st Century twist. She is a strong, intelligent, spirited, and independent young woman. Belle is the moral conscience of the story, elevated by her thoughts and deeds. The maturity and depth of her character allow her to see the true beauty and spirit within The Beast and to love him for it. This role requires a very strong singer and actress who portrays both innocence and passion with her singing and speaking voice. She should be full of warmth and have excellent stage presence. Beast A Prince transformed into a terrifying beast for his lack of compassion. He is hot-tempered and commanding, but with a warm, loving heart buried far beneath his gruff exterior. He is paying the ultimate price for a moment of mean-spiritedness and wishes that he could rectify his mistake. He is a very angry, irrational, and spoiled character that treats everyone as if they are below his status. As he is in the form of the Beast, he feels he has enough power and intensity to frighten people with his looks. There is anger and menace in The Beast’s appearance and behavior, but increasingly we see his endearing side as he interacts with Belle. It becomes clear that he is a loving, feeling human being trapped within a hideous creature’s body. Eventually this character does learn to love so he must have a soft side- but of course he’s embarrassed and too frightened to show it because he’s NEVER felt that way for ANYONE in his life. Must be a strong actor, must have a very strong speaking voice, must have great stage presence. Gaston He is the story's antagonist — the vain, egotistical, ultra-masculine villain determined to marry Belle. Gaston is the absolute opposite of the Beast. Although he is physically handsome, he is shallow, completely self- centered, not very bright, and thrives on attention. However, when his ego is bruised he becomes a very dangerous foe for the Beast, Belle, and Maurice. This role requires a strong singer and character actor. Lefou He is Gaston’s bumbling dim-witted sidekick. He goes to extraordinary lengths and suffers repeated humiliation in his efforts to please his master. The actor must be comfortable with physical comedy and the role requires strong singing and character acting. Lumiere Lumiere is the suave, French, debonair maître d’ who was turned into an enchanted candelabra. Lumiere tries to help Beast become more civil for Belle and sometimes rebels against the Beast if it suits the other characters' needs (like allowing Belle to have dinner despite Beast's refusal to let them feed her). He is light-hearted, romantic, smooth talking, and charming; and he has a romantic involvement with Babette. Lumiere MUST speak with a French accent. This role requires a strong singer, strong character acting, and he should move well. Mrs. Potts She is a warm-hearted, maternal, enchanted teapot and the cook of the castle. She sings the title song Beauty and the Beast. Mrs. Potts is very motherly in nature, since she is mother to the teacup Chip. As the castle's head housekeeper, she has a very strict sense of responsibility. Often she is kind and consoling, but can be stern when the situation calls for her to be. Out of all of the Beast's servants, she is the one who will most likely confront him about his behavior when he is in a temper. This character also speaks with a British accent. Must be a very strong singer and actress. Cogsworth A tightly wound, enchanted mantle clock and the head of the Beast’s household. He is a stuffy English man who loves perfection. Cogsworth naturally has a serious demeanor, which is evident in his strict loyalty to the Beast and his ordering the other servants around constantly. However, Cogsworth does mean well and is as good-natured as Lumiere is. He is Lumiere's best friend and also a rival of sorts. Cogsworth's preference to abide by the Beast's rules often puts a severe strain on his friendship with Lumiere. He speaks with a British accent. This role requires strong character acting and he should be able to sing. Maurice He is Belle’s loving, eccentric father who is an inventor. Despite being a bit scatter-brained, there is no mistaking Maurice’s steadfast love for his daughter Belle. He is considered by the village to be insane. Kindly, gentle, enthusiastic and inventive, he is determined when Belle faces danger. Must be a strong actor. Babette A saucy, enchanted feather duster and the object of Lumiere's affections. She is a VERY flirtatious and bubbly character that tries hard to get everyone’s attention. She is Lumiere’s girlfriend but often will try and attract others to make him jealous. Should be played with a very cute high-pitched French accent. This role requires good character acting, singing ability, and she should be able to dance very well. Chip He is an enchanted teacup and Mrs. Potts' little boy. Chip is shown to be adventurous and constantly curious about the world around him. Chip is a cheerful and active young boy. Should be a strong actor and able to sing. Madame de la Grande Bouche A former opera diva turned into an enchanted wardrobe. She is described as a “grand and larger than life” wardrobe. A very loud and boisterous character that is, just like the rest of the castle, very concerned with becoming human again. Her name means “Big Mouth” and she used to be a famous performer on the stage. She is determined to help Belle find the good in the Beast. Must be a very strong comedic actress and she should be able to sing. Silly Girls They are VERY giggly, silly, and over the top dramatic girls. They hang on Gaston’s every last word and admire him greatly. They think he is foolish for trying to win over Belle and will often put themselves out on the line to win his affection. They often provide the comic relief and could be played with French accents. They should have a lot of stage presence plus be able to dance and sing. Monsieur D’Arque He is the creepy, scheming proprietor of the local insane asylum, the Maison des Lunes. Should be a strong actor. Narrator The storyteller of the entire show. Should have a very strong and clear voice. Old Woman/Enchantress She appears only in the prologue, and is the one who turns the prince into a beast. She must be able to be visually dramatic. Napkins The napkins perform in “Be Our Guest” and “Human Again”. They should be very strong dancers. Rug Performs flips and tricks during “Be Our Guest” and “Human Again”. Should be acrobatic. Named Villagers: Bookseller, Aristocratic Lady, Fish Man, Egg Man, Sausage Curl Girl, Baker, Marie, Lady with Cane, Lady with Baby, Candle Man, Hat Seller, Milkmaid, Shepherd Boy All named villagers have lines and singing parts in the song “Belle.” And they should be strong dancers. Wolves Should be strong dancers. Servants: Forks, Knives, Spoons, Plates, Statue, Salt and Pepper, Cups, Candlesticks, Feather Dusters, Footstool, Coat Rack… etc All sing and dance in “Be Our Guest” and “Human Again”. Villagers Perform in “Belle,” “Gaston” and “Mob Song.” AUDITION MONOLOGUES You may choose only one. Pick one of the following monologues and be prepared to perform it with character and expression at auditions. It does not have to be memorized, but it is suggested that you do memorize it! NARRATOR: Once upon a time, in a faraway land, a young prince lived in a shining castle. Although he had everything his heart desired, the prince was spoiled, selfish, and unkind. But then, one winter’s night, an old beggar woman came to the castle and offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold. Repulsed by her haggard appearance, the prince sneered at the gift and turned the old woman away. But she warned him not to be deceived by appearances, for beauty is found within. And when he dismissed her again, the old woman’s ugliness melted away to reveal a beautiful enchantress. The prince tried to apologize, but it was too late, for she had seen that there was no love in his heart. And as punishment, she transformed him into a hideous beast and placed a powerful spell on the castle and all who lived there. Ashamed of his monstrous form, the beast concealed himself inside his castle, with a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world. The rose she had offered was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his 21st year. If he could learn to love another, and earn her love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time. As the years passed, he fell into despair and lost all hope. For who could ever learn to love a beast? BELLE: Papa, who has done this to you? I won’t leave you here! (senses the BEAST) Who’s there? I know someone’s there. Who are you? Are you the one who’s responsible for this! Release my father at once!...no...Wait! Forgive me. Please, let him out. Can’t you see he’s not well? He’s an old man. He could die! Wait, please, take me instead! If I stay, will you let him go? ...Come into the light. (She sees the BEAST.)oh!!!! I will stay. You have my word. Wait! No, don’t take him away, not yet! Papa! ....I’ll never see him again... I didn’t even get to say good-bye.! MRS. POTTS: Well, what would you have us do? Give up? I like this girl. I like her spunk. I think that may be the first time I’ve ever heard him use that word. (BELLE pokes her head out of her room.) Hello, dearie. I hope the Master didn’t frighten you too much. He can be a little temperamental...If there is anything we can do to make your stay more comfortable, let me know! Cogsworth, the lady needs some nourishment!...(to Cogsworth) Oh, pish tosh! I’m not about to let the poor child go hungry!! LUMIERE: (kisses BELLE’s hand) Enchanté, Mademoiselle! Nonsense Cogsworth, she’s not a prisoner, she’s our guest! We must make her feel welcome here!... Of course... of course! But what is dinner without a little music? Ma chere mademoiselle, it is with deepest pride and greatest pleasure that we welcome you tonight. And now we invite you to relax. Let us pull up a chair as the Dining Room proudly presents... your dinner!! BELLE: (Speaking to the Bookseller) Good Morning! I’ve come to return the book I borrowed. I couldn’t put it down. I wondered if you have got anything new? If not, I will just borrow one I have already read. It’s my favorite. Far-off places, daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise…Mine? You are giving it to me? Well, thank you! Thank you very much! BELLE: (To the Beast) who’s there! Oh, then you’re the one responsible for locking up my poor father! Release my father at once! No! Wait! Forgive me! Please let him out. Can’t you see he’s not well? He’s an old man. He could die! Wait, please…take me instead! If I take his place, will you let him go? Come into the light and let me see you. (Belle sees him and reacts.) You have my word. I will stay here forever. (Belle falls down in tears.) I’ll never see him again…and I didn’t even get to say good bye. LEFOU: (To Gaston) You didn’t miss a shot, Gaston. You’re the greatest hunter in the whole world. (Gaston: I know) No beast alive stands a chance against you! And no girl for that matter. (Gaston: It’s true, Lefou. And I’ve got my sights set on that one) The inventor’s daughter? (Gaston: She’s the lucky girl I’m going to marry) But, she’s – (Gaston: The most beautiful girl in town) I know, but – (Gaston: And don’t I deserve the best?) Well, of course you do! GASTON: (To Belle, Handing her flowers) for you…Mademoiselle. I know I shouldn’t have, so don’t mention it. Belle, this is the day your dreams come true! I know all about them. Picture this. A rustic hunting lodge. My little wife massaging my feet while the strapping boys play on the floor with the dogs. We’ll have six or seven. Boys, not dogs. So Belle, what’ll it be? (Belle leaves.) That Belle, always playing hard to get. She turned me down for now, but I’ll have Belle for my wife. Make no mistake about that! GASTON: (To Belle & Villagers) if I didn’t know better, I’d think you had feelings for this monster. She’s as crazy as the old man! She says this creature is her friend. Well, I’ve hunted wild beasts and I’ve seen what they can do! The Beast will make off with your children. He’ll come after them in the night! Forget the old man! I say…we kill the Beast! Try and stop us! We’ll rid the village of this Beast. Who’s with me? BEAST: There’s a stranger here! Who let him in? You have all betrayed me! Who are you? What are you doing in my castle? You’re not welcome here! I am hideous aren’t I? You’ve come to see the Beast, haven’t you? I’ll give you a place to stay! ((Grabs Maurice) (Pause, change mood.) (To Belle) Belle, are you happy here? With me? Is something wrong? You miss your father? There is a way to see him again. This mirror will show you anything …anything you wish to see. He is lost? You should go to him. You’re not my prisoner, Belle. You haven’t been for a long time. Take the mirror with you. So you’ll always have a way to look back…and remember me. Go…Go. (She exits) I’ll never see her again. LUMIERE: (CANDLE): (Try a French Accent) (Kissing Belle’s hand) Enchante’ Mademoiselle. Remember, Cogsworth, she is not a prisoner. She’s our guest! We must make her feel welcome here! Oh, and what is a dinner without a little music? Ma Chere mademoiselle, it is with deepest pride and greatest pleasure that we welcome you tonight. And now we invite you to relax. Let us pull up a chair as the Dining Room proudly presents…your dinner? COGSWORTH (CLOCK): (Try a British Accent) (To Belle) Hello, I am Cogsworth, head of the household. And this is Lumiere…If there is anything we can do to make your stay more comfortable, anything…anything at all! Except feeding you! Can’t do that. You heard what the Master said! Oh fine. A glass of water, crust of bread and then… Oh all right, dinner. But keep it down! It the Master finds out, it’ll be our necks! What?? You want music too?? MRS POTTS (TEAPOT) (Try a British Accent) (To Beast) try to be patient. The poor girl has lost her father. We won’t be human again that soon. These things take time. Master, you must help her see past how you look. You could start by trying to make yourself more presentable. Be gentle. And above all….you must control your temper! Deep breaths, Master. Deep breaths. (After Belle refuses to come out) Well, what did you expect? Would you have us give up? I like the girl. I like her spunk. (To Belle) Hello, Dearie. I hope the Master didn’t frighten you too much. He can be a little temperamental. GASTON: (strikes a pose.) Helloooo... Belle! (pointing at her book) How can you read that? There’s no pictures! Belle, it’s about time you got your head out of these books and paid attention to more important things. Hint... hint...You have to go inside to help your father? That crazy old fool. He needs all the help he can get! (laugh)! CHIP: (will be read as a scene with one of our directors) CHIP: Momma. There's a girl in the castle! MRS. POTTS: Now, Chip, I won't have you making up such wild stories. CHIP: But really, momma, I saw her. MRS. POTTS: (Disgusted) Not another word. Into the tub. (She lifts CHIP into the tub. FEATHERDUSTER enters) FEATHERDUSTER: A girl! I saw a girl in the castle! CHIP: (poking his head out from the water) See, I told ya!
