On Monday the Savage and Whitten sponsored 4-person team competition was won by Bernard O’Hare. Christopher Carroll, Paul Carroll and Shane McMahon with a fine score of 95 points, just one ahead of Vincent Toner, Shea O’Brien, John Dunne and Patrick McKenna who pushed them all the way. With 91 points, 3rd place went to Kevin Rooney, Jim Somerville, Peter Rooney and Ivan McMichael. ROCK SOLID KEENAN POWERS TO VICTORY EB Gas Services sponsored the Wednesday competition which was won with a magnificent score of 45 points by Michael Keenan, playing off 12. Michael played very steady golf on the front nine to score 20 points with 4 over. Birdies at 11 and the tricky 13th saw him 1 under for the back 9 with 25 points and a well-deserved win. Young Michael McCann[4] is never far away and finished 2nd with 43 points John Dunne and Larry Powell, both playing off 14 finished 3rd and 4th respectively, and Brian McKee[3] had the best gross score with 36 gross points. Ex Irish hockey international Robert Taylor and his partner Andrew O’Brien returned 44 points, after playing some very tasty, golf to take 1st place from the more senior stalwarts, Larry Powell and Dessie Sloan with 43. In 3rd place, also with 43 points, were Ciaran and Paul Reavey. MICHAEL FITZPATRICK SCRAPES HOME ON SATURDAY The popular and reliable star of the so-far successful Pierce Purcell team, Michael Fitzpatrick[16] edged out his nephew Darren McGivern[9] and Anton McArdle[12] on count-back to win the prestigious Newcel sponsored Saturday competition and book his place in the end-of-season Champion of Champions contest. Michael scored 22 on the front with a birdie 2 at the 6th, but must have thought he’d thrown it all away after not scoring at 15. Fortunately for him, Darren doublebogied the same hole for no score also, his only blip on a fine round with 4 birdies at 1,4,10 and 11. Colm Campbell[4] also played some great golf to finish 1 under par with 41 points, with Gerry Quinn[27] in 5th place on 40 points after count-back from David McGurk[17], who won the visitor prize, Richard Convery, Ray McCarthy and Liam Gawley. All these players will be cut a shot for their next competition. Shane McMahon[5] won the gross prize and the promising young David McGurk, playing off 4, was the best juvenile. Golfers are reminded that the Thursday open competitions will continue to run throughout the summer and all visitors are very welcome.
