DRAWING WITH MARK!
Get a pencil and use the grid below to draw the Olympic
torch as shown below. The grids will help you to line
everything up. You can always erase or put a new piece of
blank paper over the grid and start again. Don’t forget to
keep practicing and having fun!

A
very special event will take place in
Brazil this summer. People from all over
the world will come together to compete
in a huge athletic event called the Olympics.
The games
The Olympics started several centuries ago in ancient
Greece, where they were held every four years until an
emperor banned them for religious reasons. But in 1892,
a French baron decided to start the games again, and
four years later, the first modern Olympics were held in
Athens, Greece. The early games had just a few events
but grew as time went on and, in 1924, a second set of
games — the Winter Olympics — was started.
Until 1994, both the winter and summer games were
held in the same year. But the International Olympic
Committee (the group that makes decisions about
where and when the games will be held) decided to hold
an event every two years and alternate. So this year will
be the Summer Games, and in two years, the Winter
Games will be held. The next Summer Games will be in
2020.

Leaders of the countries around the world don’t
always get along, but the Olympics is a time for people
to set aside their differences and enjoy the events. In
fact, the colors in the Olympic symbol — blue, yellow,
black, green and red rings connected to each other
— were chosen because the flags of all competing countries included at least one of those colors.
However, there have been a few games that were
affected by countries not getting along. In 1916, 1940
and 1944, the Olympics were cancelled because of wars,
and not everyone participated in 1980 and 1984 because
of tension between countries.
Events
Today, the Summer Olympics includes running races,
swimming races, gymnastic competitions and more.
Depending on popularity and other factors, events are
sometimes added or taken away. This year, for example, the Olympics will include a golf competition for the
first time in 112 years.
So whatever sport you play or event you’d like to
try, practice hard. In a few years, you just might be an
Olympian.
Activity
Host your own Olympic games with
friends. Decorate T-shirts to wear while
you compete, and craft gold, silver and
bronze medals to give out as prizes. If
you have enough people, you can form
teams and nominate people to participate in the different competitions, or you
can simply compete on your own.
Some fun competitions to try:
• See who can hula hoop or jump
rope the longest.
• Set up an obstacle course with
things to jump over, tunnel through
and get around. Then time friends as
they go through it.
• Play ping-pong, tennis or badminton if you have the equipment.
• See who can throw a bean bag the
farthest.
• Come up with your own fun
activities!
