Career Profile:
Animal Illustrator Donovan Bixley
Pet: What is your favourite animal and why?
Donovan: I’ve always wanted a wolf, but a
Husky dog would do. It’s easier to think of
the animals I love to draw, like horses, which
are incredibly beautiful. I love all the muscles
in their legs and necks. I’m also fascinated
by squid and octopuses. They have such
interesting shapes and I love the tentacles. I
was really pleased to be able to put a colossal
squid in The Wheels on the Bus, and I have a
squid in a bathtub that makes an appearance
in a new book coming out soon.
Donovan Bixley has illustrated more than
150 stories, book covers and books – and
he especially loves drawing animals! He’s
also written a few books of his own, too.
We asked Donovan about his cool career
and the furry friends he shares his life with.
Pe t : How did you get into a career in
illustration and design? Donovan: I’ve been writing and illustrating
little stories for as long as I can remember.
It’s taken a long time, lots of stubbornness
and hard work to get to the stage where I can
make a career out of doing what I love. But if
I wasn’t getting paid to draw pictures I think
I would be doing it anyway.
Donovan and Yuki
Pet: What pets do you share your life with?
Donovan: My first pet was a Springer Spaniel
who ended up being called Warts, but my
favourite dog was a Beagle called Joe Cool.
He was lucky to survive falling into a boiling
stream at Rotorua. Now we have a sleek black
cat called C4. We got him from my sister.
Recently, we got another cat from the SPCA.
She is a tiny white thing called Yuki, which
means snow. She is a Manx cat and has no tail.
Pet: Why do you love drawing animals?
Donovan: Animals are really fascinating.
I love all their strange appendages and
differing personalities. I like
drawing animals more than
other things like vehicles,
buildings or landscapes.

This delightful book is Donovan Bixley’s Kiwi take
on the classic song, Old MacDonald had a Farm.
Pet: What projects do you have coming up
in the future?
Donovan: I have a neat junior fiction novel
that I’m writing and illustrating called Dr
E. Phil’s Island of Certain Doom. A bunch of
Science Fair contestants crash their plane on an
island, which has all of the world’s most deadly
creatures on it. It’s going to be lots of fun
illustrating the komodo dragons, vampire bats,
giant crocs, electric eels – plus, a few surprises!
We have three copies of Old MacDonald’s Farm
to give away. To enter, write your name,
age and address on the back of an envelope and
