Summer 2014 - Greenwich Tritons

Tritons Junior Newsletter – Summer 2014 For a reason I can’t quite work out (another senior moment – Ed) last month’s newsletter didn’t happen so you can now enjoy a bumper summer double edition. Training in August Our summer training timetable continues throughout August: Wednesday 6-‐7pm run in Greenwich Park, meet at the Bandstand Thursday 5-‐6pm swim at Charlton Lido Saturday 2-‐4pm cycling at Cyclopark Sunday 6:30-‐7:30pm swim at Eltham College As we prepare for the final London junior series aquathlon on 31 August and Hever Triathlon on 27/28 August we will be focussing on race preparation with shorter, sharper intervals and transition practice. Volume has reduced but intensity will be high! We are investigating the possibility of arranging an open water swim session at the Serpentine, details tbc. Locally there are parkruns at Avery Hill, Dulwich Park, Brockwell Park, Danson Park, Crystal Palace and Hilly Fields. Parkrun attracts all shapes, sizes and ages and if you need to walk or can’t manage the full distance that’s fine … as long as Bruno isn’t watching! As well as building your running endurance you can monitor your progress by running the same course over a period of time. Page 6 Meet the Coaches! This month … get to know Jim “the Plum” Kirkland. I have been actively involved in Triathlon for about 10 years now and a Greenwich Tritons Club member for the last four, Coaching Officer for the last two of those. I was getting a bit stale running, my marathon count was then in the eighties, and I was concerned about my aging bones and joints lasting me into my dotage, if I had known how much damage I was likely to do to myself falling off my bike I would never have started. The first time I got into the water competitively in a Triathlon was the lake in Frankfurt for Ironman Germany in 1995 and since then have managed to cover of most of the race distances involved from sprint upwards. My life outside sport has virtually disappeared with coaching or my own training sessions on virtually every day of the week. I’m currently a Level 2 coach and a qualified Triathlon Race Referee but I’m still looking to increase my knowledge base within the sport. My original motivation for taking up triathlon was to give me a reason to learn to swim, I assumed, being tight with my money, that the expense of entering an Ironman would focus my mind on actually being able to ensure I could complete the first of the three disciplines. It worked however I am still one of the worst swimmers in the club despite the hours of effort put in. The advantage being I have spent so long trying to sort my stroke out I know all the tricks and tips to pass on to others. I still have competitive goals though, and sneaking up an age group on my next birthday gives me a chance of GB qualification with a bit of application. That, and getting Michelle Treadwell into the pool, are my goals for the next couple of years. Keeping in Touch I will continue to send out updates by email but here are a couple of other ways in which you can keep up to date with the latest club news, results and information: •
