Warm up: Characterizaon is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.

Direct Characterizaon
• Direct Characterizaon‐ tells the audience what the personality of the character is. • Example: “The paent boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.” • Explanaon: The author is directly telling the audience the personality of these two children. What is Indirect Characterization?
Indirect characterization, on the other hand, occurs when a narrator doesn’t come right out and tell the reader the personality of a character, but by reading between the lines an audience can guess the character’s disposition based on certain criteria.

Use the mnemonic device of STEAL to remember the five types of indirect characterizaon
speech, thoughts, effect on others, actıons & looks! Speech What does the character say? How does the character speak?
Ex: Calling someone stupid with an angry tone. (That character is probably ___.)
Thoughts What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings? Ex: Kim is thinking about whether or not she should tell the teacher her neighbor is copying off of her test. (Kim is probably ___.)

Effect on others toward the character What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reacon to the character? Ex: Johnny told Adam that Jake cancelled their last minute sleep over plans.
