*The minimum loan amount is $1,000. Your interest rate will be determined by your credit score or your cosigner’s, whichever is greater. Rate is

will be required to review the Application Truth in Lending Disclosure prior to submitting an application.

To be eligible for the interest rate reduction for automatic payments, you must be signed up for automatic payments through Great Lakes
Educational Loan Services. If at any time automatic payments are stopped or the loan is not in repayment status, the rate discount will not be
applied. UW Credit Union reserves the right to modify or discontinue benefits at its discretion and without notice.
Our limited-term personal loan differs from
other similar industry loan programs in that it
is designed to provide you with low monthly
payments that can easily be incorporated
into your monthly budget. Other programs
may provide a lower interest rate, but have
significantly shorter repayment terms that
can cause monthly payments to exceed
$250. In addition, the program offers you
a no-cost Credit Consultation. During this
service, one of our financial specialists will
review your credit report with you and look
for opportunities to lower interest rates on
outstanding loans, reduce monthly payments
and retire debt sooner.
We encourage you to learn more about
the benefits of this program by visiting us
online at uwcu.org, stopping by a branch
or calling us at 800.533.6773.

APR is Annual Percentage Rate. Rate as of June 2011 and subject
to change. Provided chart is intended for sample payment usage
only and is subject to change. The 24 and 36 monthly payment,
total payments and total interest paid are for a $1,500 loan. One
limited-term personal loan per household. Offer valid with new
personal loans only and subject to underwriting criteria. Program
may be changed or discontinued at any time.
When Retirement
is Right For You
Here are some important factors to
consider to decide if now’s the right time
to retire.
Social Security
 Typically accounts for 40% of the
average retiree’s income.
 Experts suggest you need at least 7080% of your pre-retirement income to
maintain current standards of living.
 Start taking benefits from ages 62-70.
 Benefits are potentially reduced
the earlier you start them prior to the
Social Security Administration’s normal
retirement age for your birth year.
Health & Long-Term
Care Insurance
 Often the most unpredictable and
expensive item in retirement.
 Become familiar with Medicare
benefits and eligibility requirements.
 70% of people age 65 or older will
need some form of long-term care for
5 years or longer.
 Medicare and health insurance plans
typically don’t cover long-term care.
Spending Money in Retirement
 Develop a post retirement budget—
an assessment of spending needs—
things vs. experiences.
 Experts say taking 4% out of your
retirement fund annually is typical.
 Travel may be easier health-wise at the
beginning of retirement.
 Account for market downturns and
outliving your life expectancy.
Our financial advisors can help you
decide if retirement is in your near
future. Plus, we have in-depth knowledge
and understanding of the Wisconsin
Retirement System and Employee Trust
Fund. We can help you become more
educated regarding your options and
provide you with projections based
on your age—giving you an unbiased
analysis and developing an outcome in
your best interest.

Money Management Tips for Couples
When one partner in a relationship is primarily responsible for handling the finances, use
these tips to keep the other partner informed and avoid distress.
Share Account Knowledge. Both partners should know all account names, online logins and
passwords, balances, loan amounts and total monthly expenses. Everyone should also know
where important documents are located like insurance policies and mortgage deeds. Both
partners need to be prepared for the unexpected. It’s also a great time to take advantage of
Money Management Tools in Web Branch to help one another learn where money is going
as well as seeing an overview of finances.
Discuss Goals. Both partners should have equal decision-making power when it comes to
determining financial goals. Set aside regular time to have conversations about your financial
goals. Try to find a balance that makes both partners happy.
Explore Separate Accounts. Rather than pooling all your money together, it may work
best to have separate accounts for each other for personal expenses and a joint account for
household expenses.
Don’t Keep Financial Secrets. It’s important to have an open and honest relationship about
your finances. Discuss large purchases and any debt. Keeping these secrets can put a lot of
strain on your relationship.
Pay Off Debt. Even if it existed before the relationship, both credit ratings can be negatively
impacted, and both partners are likely contributing toward the accumulated interest. Access
your credit score for free using My Credit Score in Web Branch. Register with My Credit
Score to view a credit report snapshot and see how opening a new loan or paying off debt
will impact your scores. You can also have a free Credit Consultation to see how we can save
you money paying off loans you have elsewhere. Stop by a branch, call 800.533.6773 or
visit uwcu.org to set up an appointment.
New Debit Card Legislation
Takes Effect October 1, 2011
While the final impact of the Wall Street Reform Act for consumers is uncertain, please know
that we will work hard to minimize the cost we must pass on to our members, keep fairness
a priority and remain competitive in the marketplace. We welcome your feedback and will
continue to keep you informed on the impact this legislation will have on our membership.
Save Money On Gas
With the rising costs of gas prices,
try these simple tips to save you money at the pump.
Empty Out Your Trunk. If you have a lot of extra items that you carry with you and don’t
use regularly—golf clubs, store purchases, winter gear—consider removing them. One
hundred extra pounds can reduce fuel economy by 2%.
Check Your Owner’s Manual. See what type of gas to buy for your car. You can most likely
get by with a regular octane level of gas, rather than premium fuels. Use the correct gradient
of oil, and change your oil according to what is recommended. This reduces wear caused by
the friction of moving engine parts and removes harmful substances. Keeping your engine
in-tune according to your owner’s manual can boost gas mileage by 4%. Plus, find out what
the proper inflation is for your tires. Underinflated tires can decrease fuel economy by 6%.
Buy Gas During Cost-Saving Times. Gas is typically cheaper on Wednesdays. It’s also best
to buy gas three days prior to a holiday before the price climbs.
Shop Around for Good Prices. Search gas price websites to see gas stations in your area
that have the best deal. Examples include gasbuddy.com, gasprices.mapquest.com and
gaspricewatch.com.
Use Your Cruise Control. Gas mileage decreases at speeds above 60 mph. Use your cruise
control to avoid random accelerating and slowing down, which lessens your fuel economy.
FIS/UNISYS Award Recipient
Award Money Donated to American Family Children’s Hospital
UW Credit Union received the FIS/UNISYS FIRST Award. This award recognizes and
honors our innovation in providing members free access to their credit scores. Among nearly
100 clients nationally, we were chosen as the sole recipient of the 2011 award. The award
included a $10,000 monetary donation to the winner’s charity of choice. The full amount was
donated to the American Family Children’s Hospital on behalf of our members and employees.

On June 8, 2011, the Senate voted 54-45 in favor of delaying portions of the Wall Street
Reform Act which involved debit card legislation that shifts the cost burdens of the payment
system from retailers to financial institutions. While a majority voted for additional study
of this complex issue, 60 votes were needed under Senate rules for the delay to be approved;
therefore, the debit card changes will go into effect this fall. While the Wall Street Reform
Act currently exempts financial institutions like UW Credit Union (those with assets under
$10 billion), Federal Reserve officials in charge of implementing the law have stated that this
exemption may not be realized in practice. We have continued to keep you informed on this
important matter over the past months. UW Credit Union took an active role in voicing
our concern to our elected officials, and we appreciate the voice of many of our members in
contacting representatives of their congressional delegation.

365-Day Processing
Currently, transactions performed on
Sunday within Web Branch are dated
with Monday’s date. Beginning on July
17, as an enhancement to our members
and our dedication to providing you
real-time access to your accounts, we
are adding the functionality of posting
on Sundays and holidays.
This means that Web transfers and
payments made to UW Credit Union
loans as well as automatic transfers and
payments made on Sundays will now
post to your account the same day,
rather than the next available business
day. Earn an extra day of interest by
transferring funds to a certificate or
avoid a day of interest when paying off
a loan. As always, debit transactions,
ATM withdrawals and Touch Tone Teller
transfers will post the day they are made.
Recognition for Sustainability Efforts
We are committed to sustainable initiatives and have been named both a 2011 Mpower
ChaMpion and a 2011 EPA Green Power Partner.
The 2011 Mpower ChaMpion Program is a free, voluntary carbon reduction program for
Madison-area businesses. The credit union was one of 18 businesses selected. Businesses
that receive this recognition are committed to reducing their carbon footprint, including
the use of energy, water, transportation and waste. Through the program, the credit union
commits to sustainability initiatives and receives tools and support to complete them. The
Mpower ChaMpion program is sponsored by the U.S. EPA, City of Madison, Campos
Comprehensive Engineering and Focus on Energy.
UW Credit Union was also named a 2011 EPA Green Power Partner. The Green Power
Partnership is a free, voluntary program that encourages organizations to buy green power
as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with purchased electricity use. The
credit union was selected because 57.2% of the electricity we use for our branch network has
been generated from renewable resources, such as wind power. We are the first credit union
in the country and the first financial institution in the state to achieve this designation.
Oshkosh Hours Change
We have new hours for our Oshkosh branch, located
in the Reeve Memorial Union. Already in effect, visit
our branch Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. We are
no longer open on Saturdays.
Funds Availability Policy Amendment
The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer
Protection Act of 2010 requires an increase in the
amount of deposited funds from $100 to $200
for next day availability. If all of the funds that you
deposit by check or draft are not available on the
same business day that we receive your deposit,
UW Credit Union will make the first $200 of your
deposit available immediately. This change will go
into effect on July 6, 2011.
UW Credit Union Summer Stage
We’re proud to continue our sponsorship of the
Summer Stage at the Memorial Union Terrace. For

Chip and PIN Credit & Debit Cards
Europe and Canada have adapted the chip and PIN payment for credit and
debit cards. These cards are embedded with a chip and are protected by the use of entering
your PIN. However, some merchants have mistakenly refused to accept Visa cards containing
magnetic stripes.
Visa cardholders should be able to use their cards globally. The chip and PIN terminals are
designed to recognize magnetic stripe cards. Visa is working with merchants to make sure
they understand correct acceptance procedures.
If someone refuses to take your card:
 Have the merchant swipe your card and follow the prompts on the terminal.
 Ask the merchant to call their financial institution for instructions.
If your card is rejected at gas stations or ticket kiosks:
 Try to locate a terminal where a clerk can help you with the transaction.
Your UW Credit Union Visa cards are still a great option to use while traveling. For debit
cards, you’re able to access $5,000 daily for signature-based transactions. At ATMs, depending
on how long you’ve had your card, you can withdraw $525 daily for cards 180 days or older.
If you’ve had your card less than that, you can withdraw $225. You can also perform a cash
advance with your credit card for a small $2 fee. Interest, if applicable, is charged at your
current rate starting on the transaction date and is not higher for cash advances.
Our Monroe Street branch will close at 1 p.m. on
Thursday, September 1, due to the Badger Football
night game. We will resume our regular hours for
both Friday and Saturday.

Sing for the Children Sponsorship
Sing for the Children, a variety music show to
benefit the American Family Children’s Hospital,
raised $54,000 during two shows in April.
UW Credit Union was a proud sponsor of the event.
The proceeds from the event were donated to the
hospital’s patient and family fund.
Scholarship Winners
This spring, we provided $11,750 in scholarships
to 25 deserving high school seniors in our
market areas. View a list of winners at uwcu.org/
highschoolscholarships.
We are listening to members’ needs for chip and PIN cards and are working on
implementing this technology. We will keep you posted on our progress.
