Spring Fling
Do you know what is hanging out on the bristles of your
toothbrush? If someone in your family gets sick, their toothbrush becomes contaminated with bacteria and viruses and
can continue to cause illness after the initial infection. So be
sure to toss the toothbrush after an illness.
These bacteria aren’t only present when we are sick though,
even normal healthy microorganisms can cause infection if
they enter your gum tissue due to an injury, a break, or an
ulcer. So we are putting a new meaning to “spring fling.” The
weather is changing and so should your toothbrush! It is recommended that you should change your toothbrush every
three months. So here is an easy rule: when a season comes
to an end, send your toothbrush packing with it.
In the months between, efforts should be made to keep a
toothbrush ACAP (as clean as possible ). Be sure to always
thoroughly rinse off debris with tap water. No sharing with
family members! If you have a systemic illness or immune
disorder, you may want to soak it in antibacterial mouthwash. When you are finished brushing your teeth, be sure to
store the toothbrush upright in a rack or cup where it can dry
out. If you are traveling and want to use a toothbrush cover,
try to find one that allows for air circulation, because a lack
of air can harvest even more bacteria. If you use an electric
toothbrush, treat it the same way as a regular one. Toss the
brush attachment after illness or when the bristles begin to
wear down. A clean toothbrush is one way to a happy,
healthy mouth!
