A Message from the Provincial
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Saint Martin,
The Dominicans came into
existence to preach Gospel Truth,
Jesus Christ. Two crucial components of St. Dominic’s vision for the
Order of Preachers are: a) sound
ongoing philosophical and theological
education and, b) constant simplicity
of life in common. In all variety of weather conditions,
Dominic and his earliest band of preachers walked the
hills, valleys and farmlands of Southern France in the
early 1200’s preaching in towns large and small. Being on
the roads a considerable amount of the time preaching,
teaching and evangelizing is an itinerant way of life. It
is during those spans of time preaching on the road, the
followers of Dominic continue to pray, study, and live in
harmony with those with whom they are on mission. We
are also mendicants, that is, beggars.
As religious itinerants we do not retire. With increased
age we may slow down, yet, we continue to serve those
with whom we live and preach as well as those to whom
we are sent, faithful and unfaithful alike, in cities great
and small, and hopefully with ever-increasing joy and
wisdom. In May, our brother Fr. Austin Green, O.P. turned
93. He continues his preaching and caring for souls in his
community of assignment, in parishes and in other
preaching sites. The languages he uses are English,
American Sign and some Spanish. He can often be found
walking around the block with his cane in one hand and his
rosary in the other. Fr. Green is an inspiration to all of us
as a man of continual contemplative prayer, study, and the
preaching and living of sacred doctrine. I’m always learning
something from friar Green and one thing I’m attempting
to emulate is his simplicity of travel. Like our Master, friar
Bruno, fr. Green travels light, one small bag; I confess to
embarking on mission journeys with enough for a garage
sale. My conversion to Christ’s own life continues.

Three Friars Profess Solemn Vows

On May 22, 2013, the Dominican Province of St. Martin de
Porres celebrated the solemn profession of three of our friars,
fr. Mariano D. Véliz, O.P., fr. Cristobal de la Encarnación
Torres, O.P., and fr. Francis Jose Orozco, O.P. The
profession took place during Mass at St. Margaret of Scotland
Church coinciding with the the friars annual assembly held
in St. Louis this year. The brothers professed obedience to
the Master of the Order, Fr. Bruno Cadore, O.P., Provincial,
Fr. Chris Eggleton, O.P., and to their successors, for life. In
attendance were approximately 80 members of the Dominican
family, friars from the Provinces of St. Martin de Porres and
St. Albert the Great, sisters and laity. Friends and family were
also in attendance.
Fr. Don Goergen, O.P., Prior of St. Dominic Priory in St.
Louis concelebrated, Fr. David Wright, O.P., Student Master
presented the students and Fr. David Caron, O.P., was Master
of Ceremonies. After the liturgy, a reception was held at St.
Dominic Priory.

North American Dominican Justice Promoters
2013-2014
The North American Dominican Justice Promoters met in March in Grand
Rapids to discuss the future directions of the action on behalf of justice.
The North American Dominican Justice Promoters respond to the call for
justice in our world today. Engaging in issues using the pastoral model of
seeing, judging, and acting, we preach with the eyes, mind, and heart of
who we are. In solidarity with our sisters and brothers around the world,
and recognizing the need to address the global impact of climate change
and its ramification for all justice issues, we commit to study, advocate
and act in the following areas: Climate Justice, Economic Justice, Human
Trafficking, Migration/Immigration, Peace and Security for All Life

Please be active and prayerful about these areas of on-going concern as we seek to preach the Gospel.
We call our Dominican sisters and brothers to join us in this effort. As members of the world-wide
Dominican Family, we advocate for justice through our ministries, through our presence at the United
Nations, and through our corporate socially responsible investing. We collaborate with all who seek
a more just and sustainable world.
Aquinas Institute Inaugurates New President
On the weekend of April 13-14, 2013, there were four Inaugural events
at Aquinas Institute of Theology—the Dominican Graduate School of
Theology in St. Louis, in preparation for the installation of Fr. Dave Caron,
O.P. as the 8th president of the Institute. Aquinas Institute is the school
our students attend.
Based on the Four Pillars of Dominican Preaching and beginning with the
Preaching/Ministry Pillar, the inaugural weekend began with faculty, students,
board members and guests goint to Operation Food Search in St. Louis where
participants bagged over 1500 bags of food in 2 hours. These bags go to
poor children in St. Louis so they have healthy food to eat over the weekend. For the Prayer Pillar, there was a Mass of Commissioning in which the Board
of Trustees and all in attendance held hands over Fr. Dave as a prayer of
commissioning was prayed by Academic Dean, Fr. Greg Heille, O.P. and Sr.
Catherine Vincie.

The inauguration ceremony and rite made up the Study Pillar. In this ceremony Fr. Dave made a Profession of Faith, signed it and was invested with
the presidential medallion. The image of St. Thomas Aquinas, patron of the school, is on the medallion.
The Community Pillar was celebrated at a reception in the Aquinas Institute building, with good food, drink,
music and conversation.

Province Welcomes New Deacon
On May 11, 2013, fr. Peter Damian Marie
Harris, O.P., was ordained the Diaconate at St.
Margaret of Scotland Church in St. Louis, MO.
Also celebrating ordination to the Diaconate were
fr. Luke Barder, O.P., and fr. Jude McPeak, O.P.
In addition, fr. Nicholas Monco, O.P., was ordained
to the Priesthood. These three friars are from the
Province of St. Albert the Great.
The ordaining prelate for this joyous occasion was
Most Rev. Edward M. Rice, Auxiliary Bishop of St.
Louis.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held at
the St. Dominic Priory and Studium where our
student brothers live.

Houston Gala

Chairman of the Board of Directors of The San José Clinic
The Houston Southern Dominican Gala took place
on May 5, 2013, at the Houstonian Hotel. The
Province was privileged to honor The San José
Clinic with the St. Martin de Porres Award.
Located in the downtown area, a ministry of
the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, the San
José Clinic has been serving the uninsured for 90
years. Staffed with numerous self-giving volunteers who welcome all with open arms, the clinic
continues to open its door to people who would
otherwise not receive any medical attention. The
Dominican friars saw in the clinic’s ministry a
strong connection with the legacy of our Patron,
Saint Martin de Porres. The evening was a remarkable success due to the generosity of many
benefactors, supporters, and friends of the Order
in this great city.

From May 20-23, 2013, almost 70 friars of the Province of St.
Martin de Porres met at their annual assembly which was held at St.
Dominic Priroy and Studium in St. Louis this year.
The Assembly began with the Provincial’s address by Fr. Chris
Eggleton, O.P., Four friars, Fr. Jerry Austin, O.P., Fr. Bob Burns,
O.P., Fr. R.B. Williams, O.P. and Fr. John Markey, O.P.. gave
presentations. Reports about finances, vocations, development, the
studium and formation were all given. Fr. Greg Heille, O.P. of the
Central Province was the facilitator for the entire Assembly. A tour
of Aquinas Institute was enjoyed by all.

Vocation News
Novices and Student Brothers with candidates at DEW
This past February we gathered at St. Albert the Great Priory and Novitiate in Irving outside Dallas,
TX, for the spring Dominican Experience Weekend (DEW). An impressive group of young men
joined us for the weekend along with two of our student brothers from St. Louis, MO. Even though
our novices were in the midst of their own novitiate year, they were good enough to also assist us.
For the upcoming novitiate class, 2013-14, we will have three men entering our pre-novitiate in
late July. Upom completion of this two week program, they will move to the Novitiate and later
be vested with the Dominican habit in mid-August. Our current novices will profess simple vows
in early August and then they will move to the Studium in St. Louis.
On May 22nd at our Assembly in St Louis, we witnessed three of our young friars, fr. Mariano
Véliz, O.P., fr. Cristobal Torres, O.P., and fr. Francis Orozco, O.P., profess solemn vows in the
Order. More details can be found about the vows ceremony on the front page of this issue of Info.

Friar Spotlight - Bro. Herman Johnson, O.P.
1.How long have you been a Dominican?
I joined the Province of St. Albert the Great in 1976.
2.What drew you to the Order?
When I was ten years of age, my father brought into the
house a pamphlet about the life of a newly canonized saint.
This saint was Martin de Porres. In reading about this
four-hundred-year-old spiritual figure, I felt something
of a fusion of spirits with all the joy and peace that are
integral to an authentic divine encounter. As I moved
along through elementary, high school and college, I was
quite settled on my vocation as a Dominican Brother. As
such, in 1976 after college I entered the Chicago Province,
and afterwards the newly established province named for
St. Martin de Porres.
3.What is your current ministry?
My years in the Order have been an adventurous discovery of God’s ways. It’s been
very good. It’s been a joy bringing the Dominican preaching ministry to the African
American people in the context of university teaching. After a short tenure at Loyola and
Tulane Universities, I have been Chair and Professor of Spanish at Xavier University.
4.How has the roll of Cooperator Brother in the Order changed over the years?
The Dominican Brother’s vocation is a beautiful gift to the man who is attracted to our
Pillars of Prayer, Study, Community and Ministry. He lives out that expanded concept
of preaching so talked about at a number of general chapters. Whereas in the past the
Brother served valuable internal supportive services for a particular priory, today a Brother
is more out in the market place. He is equipped with a formation suited for himself and
ministry for our contemporary time.
5.What are you hopes for the future of Cooperator Brothers?
I see the decline in the Dominican Brother vocation as a grace filled challenge for the
whole order in terms of necessary renewal. We were reminded at the Providence, R.I.
chapter that Dominic received a second vocation years after his priestly ordination. That
vocation was to be a contemplative preacher. Although we are classified as a clerical
order, Brothers embrace in freedom and joy the preaching charism by the relational
manner in which they live and serve. It is encouraging to know that, although small in
number, there are new vocations worldwide. This was seen this past November in Peru
when 75 Brothers from different countries gathered. This gathering was called by the
Master of the Order, Fr. Bruno Cadoré, O.P., on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of St.
Martin de Porres’ canonization. I am hopeful that the Brothers will remain a vital sign
and example of the fullness of Dominican religious life and the primacy of preaching.

While many of our Info readers know some of our Provincial Office staff, many know only one
or two or know only their names. Over the next few issues of Info, we will be interviewing our
staff so you can learn more about each of them. We hope you enjoy these articles.
Interview with Isabelle Williamson,
Administrative Assistant
Where are you from originally? I was born in New Orleans, LA.
Tell us about your family.
I have two grown sons, Lucas and Paul. They are
both really great sons and I am proud of both of
them. In addition, my dear dad is still alive. My Isabelle began working with the Dominicans under
wonderful mother died in Dec. 2010 from can- the administration of Fr. Alberto. She has worked
cer. I have one brother who is the oldest child for three of the six Provincials. Fr. Alber to
Rodríguez, O.P., Isabelle Williamson, Fr. Chris Eggleton,
and four sisters; I am the oldest of the girls. My O.P., and Fr. Marty Gleeson, O.P.
siblings all have children, so I have 13 nieces and
nephews, three of whom are my Godchildren.
With the exception of a nephew in Indonesia, we are all within an hour’s drive of each other.
What do you do at the Provincial Office?
I am the Provincial Team’s assistant. Working with the Provincial and his Vicar, I answer
the Provinical’s phone, take dictation, layout editor of Info, type letters, assist with computer
troubles, file, set up conference calls, and do pretty much all the things an administrative
assistant would do.
How long have you worked for the Dominicans and what has been your experience?
I started work with the Dominicans in February 1998, so a little more than 15 years. My
experience for the most part has been a very good one. I have met many wonderful priests,
many of whom I claim as friends, who often restore my faith with their great preaching. Most
of the Dominicans I have met are compassionate, caring, Godly men. While there have been
some trials and tribulations, overall this has been a good experience.
Lenten Retreat
The Province’s annual Lenten Retreat was held
on Marh 2, 2013 at Rosaryville Spirit Life Center
near Hammond, LA. The one-day retreat was led by
Fr. Chris Eggleton, O.P., Provincial and Fr. Tom
Condon, O.P., Socius and Vicar Provincial. The
t h e m e o f t h e r e t r e a t w a s “A m b a s s o r s f o r
Christ: Formed in Prayer.” Those who attended
enjoyed continental breakfast, study sessions, lunch,
meditation and Holy Eucharist.
