Male Seahorses like to curl their tails around sea grass and stay within a 1-square-yard area. It is a vertebrate fish because it has fins, they breathe under water, and they are cold blooded. Backbone Page 5 Food Chain/Food Seahorses mainly eat brine shrimp. They can eat up to 3000 shrimp a day! Some predators of Seahorses are crabs, stingrays, tuna, penguins, various other types of fish, and the biggest predators to Seahorses are Humans. A Seahorse gets its energy from shrimp. Page 6 Adaptations One adaptation a seahorse has is mobile eyes so it can look out for predators and prey without moving its head. Another adaptation a seahorse has is the ability to change color so if predators and prey come it can hide. Another adaptation a seahorse has is its s-curved body because it can let them reach further than straight bodied ancestors. Some more adaptations a seahorse has is its long, thin snouts allowing them to reach into small places for food. Seahorses are able to grow fleshy appendages on their bodies that give them a weed like appearance that helps them with camoflauge. One more adaptation a seahorse has is courtship. Before seahorses can even begin breeding, they must have a like dance. This courtship courtship assists in the ability to receive the eggs from the female seahorse. The female inserts a tube known as an ovipositor, into the males pouch. Seahorse range Page 8 Human Impact One of the biggest predators for a seahorse is a human. Here are some things that we do to harm Seahorses. The traditional Chinese medicine trade uses up to 150 million Seahorses a year from the wild and these are used for all types of medicine. The curie trade takes about one million Seahorses from the wild. They are taken from the sea and left to die in the boiling sun and then sold as souvenirs. The pet trade takes about one million Seahorses from the wild and is thought that less than 1,000 survive more than six weeks. Glossary Adaptation-A part of the animal that helps an animal survive. Courtship- It's the step before mating, kind of like dating. Mobile eyes-It can look behind and in front of its head like chameleons.
