Nursery (Spring 1) Topic: Terrific Toys Here are the fun and exciting activities that your child will be covering over the next Communication and Language Your child will take part in daily Letters and sounds sessions. Children will listen to a range of texts and be given the opportunity to retell them with story props/ small world toys/ puppets and masks Play game ‘place the teddy’ using positional language i.e. over, under, behind, next to. Children will follow simple recipes and instructions e.g. making playdough, teddy biscuits Talk about and describe their favourite toys. Creative Development Sing songs about toys following the Music Express scheme. (Jack in the box, robots) Join in with the actions. Use a variety of boxes and joining materials ie masking tape, Cellotape, glue to design and create robots. Use cars and other wheeled vehicles to make print pictures. Design and create clothes for doll cut-outs- use collage materials. Describe texture of the materials. Children will explore sound, learning how they can change the sounds of instruments. Children will make models of their favourite toys. Children will make bouncy balls with balloons and sand. Use cogs & wheels in the craft area to design moving toys. Personal, Social, Emotional Development Children will take part in regular SEAL sessions, where children will discuss feelings, learn about how to become to a good friend and how to speak positively about themselves. Children will also develop their turn taking and sharing skills. Children will take part in team building activities where they have to work collaboratively. Children will bring home Bewley Bear for the weekend to look after and care for him. Physical development Topic ideas relating to theme: Terrific Toys (Spring 1) Topics will now be more child-led and planning will reflect the interests of the children. To inspire the children we will plan for themes. These may change due to interests. Problem solving, reasoning and Number Children will sort toys according to their colour and size. Children will complete and copy patterns using the compare bears. Children to practise counting, on a daily basis. Measuring out the ingredients (using non-standard units – cups/spoons) Children to make shape teddies Have a toy shop so children can use mathematical language of size, weight, money in their play Literacy Children will be encouraged to hold mark making tools correctly when using chalks, paintbrushes, pencil, pens etc Write name labels for their toys. Read books linked to toys. Write a diary entry for Bewley Bear Knowledge and Understanding of the World Experiment with cars and ramps using different textures- how far do the cars travel on the various textures? Children will complete a simple computer program where they must put the toys on a shelf by clicking and dragging. Children will learn about other cultures and special celebrations, learning about The Chinese New Year. Children to use and program Bee-Bots. Children take part in daily Wake up and Shake up dance and movement session to music. Children will develop their ball skills in Friday PE sessions developing their throwing, catching and kicking skills. Children will develop a range of cutting, chopping, peeling and stirring skills in the baking sessions. Talk about effects of exercise after PE or outside play – perspiration, racing heart beat, heavy breathing, tiredness. Make puppets and a jack in the box to develop cutting and joining skills . Ideas for you to try at home: Talk to your child about their toys, ask questions about the colour, size etc Play “Guess My toy?” put a selection of toys out for your child to look at then describe one for them to guess. Can your child describe one for you to guess? Talk to your child about your favourite toy, if possible show them and also get older relatives to talk about their favourite toys
