With the year half way done, I got the opinions of grade nines and learned what they think of Sanford. The students wish their names to stay anonymous. What is your favorite part of Sanford? “My favorite part of Sanford so far has been the larger classes. They allow me to have more of my friends in the same class.” Another student said, “The part I enjoy the most is the Mezz. I find it to be an easier class and that I am able to do well in it.” A different student enjoyed gym more because it doesn’t give him home work and can let him blow off steam. What would you change? “If there was one thing about Sanford I could change, it would be bigger lockers. This would give me easier access to my utensils and more room for my winter jacket. Otherwise, I would not change a thing. It’s good the way it is.” What do you think of the lockers? “I don’t enjoy having a bottom locker. Have you ever noticed that everyone around your locker goes to theirs at the exact same time as you? And it really doesn’t matter when it is! It’s obviously inevitable that others near you will be there first thing in the morning, during class change, lunch and the end of the day. That’s pretty predictable. But it could be half way through class, any class, and the person directly above, below or beside you will also be at their locker. Are they psychic or something? How, and why, are they always there?! And 99% of the time you could look down the hall, and you’ll be the only two or three people actually at their locker. I know I’m not the only one who has noticed this, as it was suggested to me by several people that I should address this issue. We’re busy with friends, family, and significant others. Just as the semester ends, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Sanford Collegiate is buzzing with excitement for a change in schedule. But February seems to have a hidden week that isn’t talked about much. That is ‘Eating Disorders Awareness Week’, which is the last week of February- and there are of course different ideas of what an eating disorder really is. It is classified as a range of psychological disorders that is displayed in abnormal eating habits. Anorexia nervosa or bulimia, are the most thought of in general. However, there are many more disorders that not spoken of or recognized when seen, such as Selective Eating Disorder (SED) or Night Eating Syndrome. These eating disorders are extremely serious and can go as far as causing death. This is an extreme topic that more often than not people can get uncomfortable talking about, and really it is understandable. Bodies are put under extreme conditions and the outcome is visible to the world. If you know someone with an eating disorder, they are most likely under stress and fear and have psychological dispositions that are changed compared to ours. An eating disorder underlies the fear we have that we can’t control, and we feel the need to control things. It isn’t a one-time experience, eating disorders take over your life, and they ruin your everyday activities and thoughts, just one put down at a time. We cannot control ourselves when it comes to impulses; every time you give into yourself it makes it harder for you to get out. Eating disorders are more popular when anorexia is talked about- which might be a more extreme version of many disorders, but it certainly isn’t the only one. through something like this then make sure to tell someone you know who can do something or tell you how to handle the situation. For anyone out there, who is set on doing what they are going to do, then I will tell you one thing- it gets better. Talking about your situation and your fears help to a point where you can feel good about yourself, and eat healthy, follow a work-out routine and life is amazing again. We are all busy with our own lives that we forget sometimes the things that don’t affect us right now will never be a problem, but we can all work towards supporting those who need us. -Sarah Steinig There will always be people who suffer from these dreadful disorders, but there is one thing you can do to spread awareness, and that is to inform yourself. Someone who has an eating disorder will not typically come out and say it, but they will try to cover things up and act suspicious. Learn the signs and symptoms, ask around, talk about it. February is famously known across the country as I Love to Read Month, to encourage children to read more and to enjoy reading as well. Schools set up goals for their students to reach and at the end of the month they celebrate their achievements in reading. Schools also invite local celebrities, such as radio personalities, news anchors and reporters, newspaper journalists, politicians and even some of the Winnipeg Jets players, to read to the children and encourage them to read at home. Schools can enter a contest to win the opportunity to have one of the Winnipeg Jets players come to their school and read them the official Winnipeg Jets children’s book “The Home Team”, sign autographs and answer questions. To enter the contest schools must list their Top 5 reasons why they would like to host the Winnipeg Jets. The contest is starting this year to encourage young hockey fans that reading can be just as exciting as watching the game. Other organizations, such as The Children’s Museum, are also holding special activities all month long for I Love to Read Month. Each school celebrates I Love to Read Month in very different ways all set up to encourage children from a young age that reading is cool and fun to do anytime any place, and whatever mood you are in. Reading is essential to helping young minds grow for the future. -Erin Westra Page 4 using their save, a teammate in distress could be helped out in order to keep them in the game. Just before the competition, the teams consisting of 8 boys and 10 girls were given one minute to discuss strategy for the difficult battle ahead. The bee began with the boys’ team winning the privilege to go first. The words started off easy enough, with “idioms” and “clock” both spelled correctly, but it didn’t take long for the competition to get dirty. On only the third word to be spelled, no less than five minutes into the bee, the girls’ team was caught cheating red handed. An exuberant cheer rose from the guy’s side of the room as Mrs. Reis announced the penalization of one point from the girls’ team. The cheating incident is evidence of how quickly the competitiveness of a spelling bee can corrupt one’s mind and lead to total loss of sportsmanship. The spelling bee is not a sport for the faint of heart. As the bee went on, both the girls and guys teams saw their first members lost when Sara Winzinowich and Scott McConnell both missed the mark on their words by one letter. As the rounds went on the tension in the room reached a fever pitch when Noah Lay- Sabre Scoop the face of immense pressure failed to spell “depreciate” making Kurtis and the boys winners. A triumphant roar from the boys’ side filled the room as they had emerged victorious. After the presentation of prizes a potluck lunch was enjoyed by both sides in celebration of a good battle fought. Around the World News Chaos In Paris Bee Spells Drama For Grade 12 Students On December 18th the grade 12 students in room 9 were locked in to the greatest battle of wits the world of sports has to offer: A spelling bee. A spelling bee, for those of you who don’t know, is a fierce competition in which participants are required to spell out a word correctly in order to move on. Spell the word incorrectly, however, and you are out. Typically as the competition goes on, the words become increasingly difficult to spell, and the men are quickly separated from the boys. Mrs. Reis’ grade 12 Transactional English class figured themselves up for the challenge and thus, the spelling bee of December 18th was planned. With Mrs. Reis as facilitator and yours truly as the on-scene reporter, the class was split into two teams (guys vs. girls, naturally) and the ground rules were laid down. The spelling bee would proceed in alternating order. If the first team spelled the word correctly, the second team would get a different word to spell, but if the first team was incorrect, the second team would have an opportunity to spell that same word correctly. The format was to be single-elimination, with each member possessing one “save”. By The two both incorrectly spelled “pneumatic” so the bee would go another round, despite the girl’s furious protests of a time limit violation by Kurtis. Two more rounds would go on with no winner declared. Kurtis then spelled “xylophone” correct, but Lynessa, in te, taking his time to mull over his options while tasked with spelling “faucet”, was called out by Kendra Neufeld: “It’s already Christmas!!” Amidst the ensuing bedlam, Mrs. Reis declared that any more out -of-turn outbursts would result in the elimination of a team member. However, it was made clear by Kendra’s frustrated comment that these two teams did not like each other one bit. Later on while struggling with “xenophobia”, Kurtis Weins was miraculously saved by Josh Peters, a move that would pay dividends later on. Lynessa Hofer shocked the room by correctly spelling the marathon word “antidisestablishmentarianism”. It appeared the guys team was done for, with the girls still having three members standing against the lone boy, Kurtis. However, the unthinkable happened. Kendra, stuck on “pterodactyl” was saved by Sarah Steinig, but Sarah proceeded to spell the word incorrectly, eliminating both her and the trashtalking Kendra, setting the stage for a dramatic one on one faceoff between Kurtis and Lynessa. After the shooting on Parliament Hill in Canada the world has been on high alert for terrorists and extremists. People around the world are being intimidated by the death threats they are getting from the movie “The Interview”, associated with the assassination of the dictator Kim Jong-un, to the tragic event on January 7th, 2015. On the streets of Paris in France, two masked gunmen armed with rifles and other assault weapons forced their way into the office of Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical weekly newspaper which is known for mocking religious figures of all denominations. An attack that lasted only five minutes left twelve people murdered in cold blood and 11 innocent people were inflicted with non-fatal injuries. After entering the building of Charlie Hebdo and shooting and killing staff cartoonists, an economist, editors, maintenance workers, guests and police officers, the terrorists continued to shout “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great” in Arabic) and also “the Prophet is avenged”. They swiftly exited and drove off continuing north of Paris when they abruptly and violently smashed into another car, injuring the driver. Abandoning their car they carjacked another vehicle to flee from the scene. The three terrorists, who plotted the attacks over the course of about a year, all died in Friday’s shootout. ever, have decided not to print the controversial editorial cartoons because they were deemed offensive, but some countries, including France did allow it. A satirical newspaper or comic is another form of freedom of speech. Every country limits free speech to a certain degree. Some do so only to prevent immediate harms; others ban “hate speech” (offensive utterances against groups). Since the Paris attacks, both approaches are colliding with each other and with free speech. Is freedom of speech allowing the truth to be flowing and transparent for all to see and hear? Or, is freedom of speech being used in a harmful way towards others causing violent acts to occur? “We are under threat because we are a country of freedom, and because we are a country of freedom we ward off threats and will punish aggressors,” French President Hollande said. Freedom of speech is a very hot topic in the world. It allows people to have the right to communicate one’s opinions and -Anastasia Pasieczka ideas to anyone willing to receive them.
