THE IUCN RED LIST OF THREATENED SPECIES™ Taxonomy Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Animalia Arthropoda Malacostraca Decapoda Gecarcinucidae Taxon Name: Parathelphusa maculata De Man, 1879 Synonym(s): • Potamon tridentatum variety incertum Taxonomic Notes: This species was formerly included in the Parathelphusidae but has recently been reassigned to the Gecarcinucidae; Parathelphusidae is now regarded as a junior synonym of Gecarcinucidae (Klause et al. in press). Assessment Information Red List Category & Criteria: Least Concern ver 3.1 Year Published: 2008 Date Assessed: January 1, 2008 Justification: The assessment by Ng & Yeo (2007) is followed here. Listed as Least Concern in view of its wide distribution, presumed large population, and because it is unlikely to be declining fast enough to qualify for listing in a more threatened category. Geographic Range Range Description: Singapore: Singapore. Malaysia: Widespread throughout Peninsular Malaysia: Pulau Aor; Terengganu. Indonesia: Sumatra: southern half of Sumatra (ca. 1°101'S, 101°15'E) (Ng 1988). Country Occurrence: Native: Indonesia (Sumatera); Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia); Singapore © The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Parathelphusa maculata – published in 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2008.RLTS.T134119A3903586.en 1 Distribution Map © The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Parathelphusa maculata – published in 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2008.RLTS.T134119A3903586.en 2 Population No information available. Current Population Trend: Stable Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information) Primarily aquatic. This species prefers lowland streams and seems quite tolerant of muddy waters. These animals have a high tolerance of low oxygen conditions and can be found in stagnant pools sometimes. It is common under rocks, logs, vegetation and debris, but also dig deep burrows by the banks. The burrows always open above the water level, however, the end of the burrow is always filled with water (burrows can be a metre or more in depth, can be slanted and sometimes bent). Gravid females rarely move around in the open, instead stay in the burrows. Brooding ones are occasionally encountered. This is a nocturnal species and is most active after sunset. Can be a pest in rice fields, but is basically harmless. Systems: Freshwater Threats (see Appendix for additional information) No immediate threat, especially to populations within protected areas throughout its range. Occasionally sold as pets in the aquarium trade. Conservation Actions (see Appendix for additional information) The retention of designated protected areas.
