Workplace Safety Tip
TAKE A BREAK. Giving
your eyes a rest and allowing them to focus on
things at varying distances can help reduce strain
and fatigue. It is recommended workers take a
10-minute break for every hour spent on the
computer. These breaks
can include working on
taxks that require your
eyes to focus on objects
at a further range.
Health & Wellness
What are HIIT and MICT workouts, and which type is more beneficial to my
health?
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Moderate Intensity Continuous Training
(MICT) are types of exercise designed to improve cardiorespiratory fitness. HIIT is
characterized by periods of work performed at or near maximum exercise capacity
(often measured by oxygen consumption or heart rate) followed by periods of recovery. For example, a HIIT workout may consist of a series of 30 second sprints and 30
second rest intervals on a treadmill. MICT workouts involve maintaining a certain intensity of exercise for a sustained period of time. During these workouts, you would
not be working at maximum capacity, as that would be very difficult to maintain. An
MICT workout may involve running along a flat trail at a constant pace for at least 15 –
20 minutes before stopping. HIIT workouts tend to be shorter in duration than MICT
workouts.
Both types of workout are great options for exercise. Research has shown HIIT to be
more effective at improving maximum cardiorespiratory capacity (how well you take in
oxygen during exercise), although MICT can provide similar results to a lesser degree.
Both types of training can also assist in weight loss and achieving overall better
health. If you’re trying to choose between the two, it’s best to choose the type of training that you enjoy the most. Everyone has different emotional responses to exercise,
so the key is finding a workout that you are motivated to do and can maintain over
time. Both MICT and HIIT offer a wide range of options that include cycling, biking,
and jogging (MICT) or hill springs, plyometrics and specialized classes (HIIT). Experiment with different combinations of workouts to find the fitness routine that works best
for you!
