Pelvic (Pregnancy/Uterus/Bladder) Diagnostic & OB • You should begin drinking 32 ounces (one quart) of water one-and-one-half hours prior to the scheduled appointment time, and be finished drinking one hour before the appointment time. • A full bladder is necessary for this exam. You should not urinate after drinking the water, until the exam is complete. • You may eat. • Any medications can be taken. Gallbladder and Upper Right Quadrant (Gallbladder/Liver/Pancreas) Day Before the Exam: • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before (NPO). Day of the Exam: • Nothing to eat or drink until after the exam is completed. • Any medications can be taken with limited sips of water (unless your medications need to be taken with food). When abdominal & pelvic ultrasounds are scheduled together, you will be given two time slots due to the different preparations necessary for each test. These times will usually be about two hours apart. 3 Continued U H G E N E V A M E D I C A L C E N T E R Ultrasound Continued Kidney/Renal • No preparation necessary. If kidney and bladder ultrasounds are scheduled together: • You should drink 32 ounces (one quart) of water one hour before the appointment time. • A full bladder is necessary for this exam. If possible, you should not urinate after drinking the water, until the exam is complete. For the Abdominal Ultrasound (first of two tests): Carotids (Venous & Arterial) • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before and until the exam is completed (NPO). • No preparation necessary. • Venous and arterial ultrasound exams must be done on separate days and cannot be scheduled on the same day. • The venous ultrasound exam will be done 1st to assure there are no blood clots. For the Pelvic Ultrasound (second of two tests): • After the first test, you will drink 32 ounces (one quart) of water to fill your bladder for the pelvic ultrasound. You will also be able to eat while filling the bladder. 4 L l C CE eN nT tEeRr UU HH H G S E GN eE nV eAv aM Em De IdCi Ac a E X A M I N AT I O N P R E PA R AT I O N F O R DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY The day of the test, you will be asked several questions regarding your medical history and you will be asked to sign a consent form for us to perform the test. If you have any questions regarding the preparation or your test, please call the Radiology Department at 415-0165. Upper GI/Barium Swallow/Small Bowel Follow-through (SBFT) • Supper at scheduled hour the night before your appointment. • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before and until the exam is completed (NPO). • Any medications can be taken with limited sips of water. • IMPORTANT: following the exam, it is essential to drink a lot of fluids to clean the barium out of your system. IVP (Intravenous Pyelogram) Follow the instructions contained in the Fleets Kit given to you by our Radiology Department. Preparation begins at breakfast, the morning before the exam is scheduled. Please follow the preparation fully so that you are properly prepped for the examination. Continued Certain blood tests may be required for us to perform this test. If lab work is necessary, you will be informed of the need when scheduling your test. 5 U H G E N E V A M E D I C A L C E N T E R Diagnostic Radiology Continued If you have had barium x-rays, dye or nuclear medicine, wait 7 days before scheduling this test. Barium Enema or Barium Enema with Air Contrast Follow the instructions contained in the Fleets Kit given to you by our Radiology Department. Preparation begins at breakfast, the morning before the exam is scheduled. Please follow the preparation fully so that you are properly prepped for the examination. Mammograms * • Wear a two-piece outfit, as you will need to remove only clothes from the waist up. • Do not wear deodorant, perfumes or powder under the arms, on or near the breasts. • If you have had any previous mammograms elsewhere, please make arrangements to bring the films with you or have them mailed to our facility prior to your appointment If you have any questions regarding the preparation or your test, please call the Radiology Department at 415-0165. • After the preparation is completed, nothing to eat or drink after 10:00 PM the night before and until the exam is completed (NPO). • Any medications can be taken with limited sips of water. • IMPORTANT: following the exam, it is essential to drink a lot of fluids to clean the barium out of your system. Bone Density (Also Known as DEXA Scan) Wear comfortable clothing, preferably pants with an elastic waist band. *Evening and weekend scheduling available for mammograms. 6 U H G E N E V A M E D I C A L C E N T E R E X A M I N AT I O N P R E PA R AT I O N F O R NUCLEAR MEDICINE Brain Scan • No preparation necessary. • This test takes about one hour. Gastric Scan Gallbladder Scan (HIDA) • Nothing to eat or drink eight hours before the exam. • This test takes about two hours. Bone Scan • Drink plenty of fluids prior to the exam. There are no restrictions on eating prior to this exam. • No X-ray barium 24 hours prior to the exam. CT oral contrast (barium) is allowed. • The scan itself takes about one hour. However, once the I.V. injection is done, there will be a three-hour wait before the 7 scan begins. • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before and until the exam is completed (NPO). • 6 hours prior to study, any medications can be taken with limited sips of water. • This test takes about two hours. • If you are diabetic, please bring your insulin in with you, a meal will be given to you as part of your test. Gastrointestinal (GI) Bleed • No preparation necessary. • This test takes anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Infection WBC (All Day Study) • No preparation necessary. Liver/Spleen Scans • No preparation necessary. • This test takes about 45 minutes. Continued U H G E N E V A M E D I C A L C E N T E R Nuclear Medicine Continued Renal Scan • No preparation necessary. • This test takes from two to three hours. • Force fluids prior to study. Thyroid Uptake and Scan This study requires two days for preparation. • No IVP/Intravenous/ CT scan contrast three months prior to the exam. • No thyroid medication three weeks prior to the exam. Lung Scan (VQ Scan) First Day: Nothing to eat four hours before the capsule is taken. • No preparation necessary. • This test takes about one hour. Second Day: No further preparation necessary. The scan takes about one hour. Meckel’s Scan • No preparation necessary. • This test takes about one hour. Gated Cardiac (MUGA) • No preparation necessary. • This test takes about one hour. Parathyroid Scan • No preparation necessary. 8 U H G E N E V A M E D I C A L C E N T E R E X A M I N AT I O N P R E PA R AT I O N F O R CT SCANNING Chest Scan with Contrast/High Resolution Chest Scan with Contrast * Certain blood tests may be required for us to perform this test. If lab work is necessary, you will be informed of the need when scheduling your test. • Nothing to eat or drink three hours prior to the exam. Head/Brain Scan * Certain blood tests may be required for us to perform this test. If lab work is necessary, you will be informed of the need when scheduling your test. Abdominal & Pelvic Scan* Certain blood tests may be required for us to perform this test. If lab work is necessary, you will be informed of the need when scheduling your test. • Nothing to eat or drink three hours prior to the exam. You will be required to drink a CT scan contrast agent that can be picked up in our Radiology Department at least a day before the exam. The directions for use will be on the bottle. Spine Scan * • No preparation necessary. Sinus Scan * • No preparation necessary. • Nothing to eat or drink three hours prior to the exam. IAC Scan * • Nothing to eat or drink three hours prior to the exam. Renal Stone Protocol CT Scan* *Evening scheduling available for all CT scans. • No preparation necessary. 9 U H G E N E V A M E D I C A L C E N T E R E X A M I N AT I O N P R E PA R AT I O N F O R CARDIOPULMONARY Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) • No respiratory medications on the day of the test. Echocardiogram • Please wear loose clothing. Electroencephalogram (EEG) • Hair must be washed and air dried…no blow-drying. • No make-up or hair mousse/gel/spray. • No perfume or body sprays. • Please wear a button-up shirt or blouse. 10 U H G E N E V A M E D I C A L C E N T E R E X A M I N AT I O N P R E PA R AT I O N F O R CARDIAC STRESS TESTING • Total length of appointment is approximately one hour. Stress Echo (Treadmill) • Light breakfast or lunch is permitted. • Bring list of medications. • Wear clothing and shoes comfortable for exercise, button up shirt, pants and no underwire bra. • You will have an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) before exercising on a treadmill. • Immediately after exercise you will have another echocardiogram for cardiac evaluation. • Total length of appointment is approximately one-and-onehalf hours. For all Cardiac Stress Testing, please bring your physician’s order and your list of current medications with you for registration. Also, please do not wear perfumes or colognes. Dobutamine Stress Echo (No Exercise) • Light breakfast or lunch is permitted. • Bring list of medications. • An IV will be started. • IV medication (Dobutamine) will be given and echocar diograms (ultrasound of the heart) will be performed for cardiac evaluation. • Total length of appointment is approximately three hours. Treadmill Stress • Light breakfast or lunch is permitted. • Bring list of medications. • Wear clothing and shoes comfortable for exercise, button up shirt and pants. • You will exercise on a treadmill with monitoring of your blood pressure and EKG for cardiac evaluation. 11 Continued U H G E N E V A M E D I C A L C E N T E R Cardiac Stress Testing Continued before exercising on a treadmill to evaluate your heart at rest. • At the peak of exercise another isotope will be given and then followed with a repeated scan for cardiac evaluation. • Total length of appointment is approximately four to six hours. Adenosine/Persantine Nuclear Stress (No Exercise) • No caffeine at least 48 hours prior to the exam…that is, 9AM two days before your test (see Pg. 13 for list). • Early morning testing: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before and until the exam is completed. • Late morning testing: Light breakfast before 6:30 am and nothing to eat or drink until the exam is completed. • Bring list of medications. • Wear clothing and shoes comfortable for exercise, no underwire bras. • An IV will be started. • You will be given an isotope through the IV and scanned to evaluate your heart at rest. • An IV medication (Persantine) will then be given and your blood pressure and EKG will Treadmill Nuclear Stress • No caffeine at least 48 hours prior to the exam…that is, 9AM two days before your test (see Pg. 13 for list). • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before and until the exam is completed (NPO). • Bring list of medications. • Wear clothing and shoes comfortable for exercise, no underwire bras. • An IV will be started. • You will be given an isotope through the IV and scanned 12 U H G E N E V A M E D I C A L • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • be monitored. • Another isotope will be given and then followed with a repeated scan for cardiac evaluation. • Total length of appointment is approximately four to six hours. • If you have any chronic respiratory disease or condition, please notify the cardiology technician prior to your test. About Caffeine Some tests require that you not eat or drink anything containing caffeine for 48 hours prior to the exam. If you do take caffeine, your test will have to be re-scheduled for another day. Here are some guidelines to help you avoid that inconvenience.
