Teddies come to school!
Nursery and Reception children brought
their teddy bears to school for a week as
part of the IPC Bears
Topic. The children
painted pictures of
their bears, wrote about them and let them
join in all the activities in their classroom. On
Friday everyone had lots of fun at a Teddy
Tropical Inc.-counters!
As part of our Year 6 link
with Bluecoat Secondary
School Willow Class were invited to a presentation by
Tropical Inc, a company who
are dedicated to increasing
awareness and fascination of exotic animals.
The children had a
unique and exciting opportunity to learn about
and handle a wide range
of animals including
snakes, spiders, meerkats, parrots, tortoises
and even a skunk. The
children were amazed
to learn lots of interesting facts and were
surprised
to find out
that snakes
have no
hearing, instead they
use jaws to
pick up vibrations to
help them get around and detect prey. Ali
Usman was even brave enough to handle a
tarantula whilst Abu Bakr demonstrated
that he has no fears of snakes. Overall,
the children thoroughly enjoyed the Tropical Inc learning experience as it was both
fascinating and interactive.

been learning a range of circus skills including juggling and spinning plates. In Art & DT
we have been working collaboratively and we have made models
of the big top circus tent. Also,
we have been face painting and
looking at the clown expressions

Robinwood Residential for Y5
This half term saw year five go
on their two day residential trip
to the fantastic Robinwood Activity Centre. The trip was a
huge success, and was a great
opportunity for all the children
to learn through new and exciting experiences. From the zipwire to the giant swing, caving
to canoeing, the children were
pushed to their limit to overcome their fears. It was also a
chance for the children to develop their life skills by being away
from home for two nights. A
fantastic time was had by all,
here are some quotes from the
children themselves about the
trip:
I enjoyed the zip wire
and the giant swing.
The funniest part was
seeing my friend
scared to go in the water. I was scared when I
went in to the Piranah
pool but not once I
came out.’
‘My favourite thing was the
piranha pool. I fell in three
times but I loved it, I had to
swim back to the edge!’
The staff were excellent, and the food
was plentiful and delicious. We can’t
wait to show you all the pictures at
our Robinwood awards ceremony!

‘My favourite thing
was the trapeze, I
faced my fear of
heights and overcame
it.’

‘
Robinwood was
great! All the
activities were fun,
but my favourite was
the Giant Swing.’

Story in a day!-Phase 3
On 22nd January 2014 Year 4 held a ‘Story in a
Day’ event. The aim of this day was to create
an exciting writing day that would develop
our writing skills.
We spent the whole day writing! We planned
our ideas, wrote a draft copy, edited our
work then presented a final best copy of our
story. The theme for our story was
‘alone on a desert island’
We had many adventures along the way and
produced some fantastic stories. Year 4 enjoyed it so much that on 12th February Year 5
and 6 also held a ‘Story in a Day’.
We are planning on a story day every half
term now. Please come in and read all our
stories that are on display

St Hilda’s Movie Makers!
Mr Vinten has been working with some year
6 pupils to learn how to use i-movie with
some recently purchased Apple Mac i-book
pro laptops. Humaaira, Saima, Shahil,
Sulaiman, Hafiza, Sajida and Nadiah have all
made movies about our school. They have
developed their skills in filming and editing. The pupils said they really loved the
sessions and especially enjoyed interviewing the teachers and Mrs Pursey.
Will we be seeing them in Hollywood or
Bollywood in years to come?

Oldham Dodgeball Competition
St Hilda’s participated in the Oldham
Dodgeball Competition that was held at
Failsworth Sport Centre. The team competed against other local primary
schools in games of 3 sets. After
earning a draw against the joint
champions in the first game of the
tournament, the children became
more confident and went on to
earn a very respectable 4th place.
The achievement was amplified
by the fact that this was the
team’s first ever experience of
playing against other schools.
The dodgeball team was made up
of Year 6 children: Mohsin, Hasan, Hafiza and Humairaa from
Pine class and Saima H, Nadia, Ali
Usman and Rasal from Willow
class. All the children did a fantastic job at
representing the school and we are all very
proud of them.
