A State of New Jersey Best Practice School BHS Holds Drive for Suits for Success By: Mrs. Danielle Salsman, Advisor Throughout the month of February, the Business Honor Society held a charity drive to collect new or gently used men’s and women’s professional attire to donate to Suits For Success. According to their website, Suits for Success, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower individuals on their journey toward self-sufficiency through professional development services. One o fhte services offered by Suits for Success is to provide economically disadvantaged clients with professional attire for interviews and the first week of employment. The students solicited donations from local stores and items left behind from local dry cleaners. In addition, they contacted professionals at many local businesses and schools to seek out donations. Items collected included suit sets and separates, shirts, shoes, and other accessories. The students did a fantastic job and collected over 200 items which will be dropped off to Suits for Success during spring break. This is the third year that the Business Honor Society has held this drive and we are proud to say it was our most successful year yet! BHS Members Shyama Dave, Tiffany Leung, Hemali Patel, Stuti Vyas, Vivek Patel, Ian Smith, Zaryaab Naqvi, Derek Lopez, and Laila Abbas pose with some of the donated items. A State of New Jersey Best Practice School NHS Actively Working to Better the Community By: David Tian, Treasurer The members of the JFK National Honor Society have been very active over the past few months, helping to make both their school and their community a better place. On December 3rd 2015, the National Honor Society held its annual blood drive with the Central Jersey Blood Center. The blood drive was a great success, and the money raised will be donated to the Buddy Ball organization, which helps children with special needs to participate in an organized sports program. Throughout the month of January, members of the National Honor Society assisted their fellow classmates by attending peertutoring sessions after school. In February, members hosted a hot chocolate sale, which students were glad to see after arriving at school in the cold weather! That month, the National Honor Society also assisted at the open house, helping to guide parents to the correct classrooms and making sure everything was running smoothly. But the year isn’t over yet, and the National Honor Society has plans for several more upcoming events. New members will be inducted into the Society during a special ceremony later this month. Afterwards, members will participate in the local MS Walk on April 16, in order to raise funds for the benefit of those with multiple sclerosis. With these goals in mind, the National Honor Society continues its tradition of dedicating its time and effort to making a difference in the community. The team will participate in a second competition at Bridgewater High School on April 2, and 3. Students have worked for the last six weeks to build a robot that can submitted a safety animation video and applied for an additional five awards. Other experiences this season included a trip to Comcast Center in Philadelphia where students participated in a robotics boot camp that familiarized them with the many challenges of the program and helped them get the skills necessary for this year’s “Stronghold” game. The team travelled to NJIT in overcome physical obstacles, breach fortress security, pick-up a large ball and shoot it, as well as climb a castle wall. In addition to building a robot, the USFIRST program gives students many opportunities to learn about project planning, business plan development, marketing, web development and design, finance and sponsorship development. This year, students produced and early January for the season kick-off event, where they presented the team “Stronghold” flag and picked-up a kit of parts that enabled them to build their robot. The 2016 “Mr. JFK” candidates were Brian Bido, Cristian Cardosa, Anthony DelPopolo, Connor Freeman, Nick Gurrieri,Thambu Jisnnu, Dan Lodato, Frankie Maravilla and Lincoln Thom (pictured below). During the week long competition students cast their votes for their favorite candidate in the following categories: “Best Hair”, “Nicest Smile”, “Most School Spirit” and a general vote for “Mr. JFK”. The highlight of the event was the very exciting and entertaining Friday evening competition. Performing before a packed auditorium and competing for votes from a faculty panel of judges the candidates put on March 2016 an outstanding display of style, talent and wit! The evening event categories consisted of “Formal Wear Modeling”, a “JFK High School Trivia” contest, a “Talent” segment and an “Open -ended Question Response”. A National & State of New Jersey Service-Learning Leader School Page 6 John F. Kennedy Memorial H.S. A State of New Jersey Best Practice School News from the Visual Arts Department By: Ms. Vivianna Acuna-Fransisco On January 7th, Mrs. Rotella’s AP Studio & Art Major students collaborated with the AP Art Students from Perth Amboy High School for the 3rd year in the row in a group show at the Perth Amboy Gallery Center for the Arts. Mrs. Acuna-Francisco is the gallery’s curator. This year the theme was Coexistence. The concept was that there are many things in nature that appear to be complete opposites, yet they manage to coexist. What’s more, they usually need each other; one cannot be without the other. The purpose of the show was to explore the complex relationships that exist between these seemingly opposite forces that, at the same time, exist in harmony with one another. The exhibit was very successful and attended by many. Congratulations to Brandon Bravo, Elissa Dalerta, Brandon Jones, Natalia Klimchuk, Taffy Lashley, Katelyn Poisler, Chamodhi March 2016 Ranathunga, Saad Salahuddin, and Thamarat Singcharoenchai (pictured below) on an excellent show! On March 1st, Brandon Bravo was honored by Mayor McCormac and Woodbridge Council members for his recently published book that was written by Jesus Ramos III from Think, Act, Believe, a non-profit group geared to youth empowerment. Brandon illustrated this children’s book titled “Tab Albers, Finds His Purpose” is about a determined Panda finding the path to his end goal. Brandon also was invited to read his book at Menlo Park Terrace School for Read Across America on March 2nd. A National & State of New Jersey Service-Learning Leader School Page 7 John F. Vans Custom Culture is a national high school customization competition using blank Vans shoes to be customized around specific themes. Vans Custom Culture was created to inspire and empower high school students to embrace their creativity through art and design. Vans believes everyone should be empowered to express themselves creatively and should be given the tools to do so. The winners will be announced in May. Wish us luck!! Set Design was very busy this past month getting the sets and props ready for this year’s senior play, Legally Blonde. Students dedicated many hours to creating the beautiful backdrop to this great musical. Thank you to all those students for their creativity and hard work. Math Team Holds Home Meets this Winter By: Mr. Patrick McGroarty, Advisor The JFK Math Team has weathered the winter months quite nicely. We had a January and February home meet to keep our mathematical acumen sharp. A home meet allows up to a maximum of ten students to work on the problems collaboratively for one hour, and submit one common solution paper. Our Math Team was so well represented, that we had one group of ten March 2016 compete under my supervision in Room 232, while a second group of eight was under the supervision of Ms. Smith in the Peer Tutoring Club. Our next away meet is March 16th at East Brunswick High School while the last away competition will take place on April 13th at Bridgewater High School. Any students who are interested in attending these competitions should contact Mr. McGroarty, The Club Advisor, or one of our two co-captains, Aditya Sridhar and David Tian. A State of New Jersey Best Practice School “Here’s What’s New” with the JFK Choirs By: Ms. Christine Scott “If music be the food of love, sing on.” David Dickau Music is a ubiquitous part of our everyday lives, and musical talent is something that must be cherished and nurtured. At John F. Kennedy Memorial High School, students are given an opportunity to foster their interest in music through our Choirs. The Chorus, Concert Choir, Show Choir and the Chamber Choir make up the various groups that aspiring musicians of JFK can be a part of. Each group has to it a distinct color, which allows students to explore different kinds of music while having a learning experience at the same time. Here’s what’s new with the Choirs at JFK. Chorus The Chorus is an ensemble that meets as a class during the school day – everyone is welcome to join! Students in this year’s Chorus performed at the annual Winter Concert. The highlight of their performance was the “Hallelujah Chorus”, which received a standing ovation! Professional guest musicians accompanied the Chorus on cello, percussion, and bass, adding an overall charm to the performance. The Chorus will be performing with the Iselin Middle School Choir at JFK’s annual Spring Concert – over 200 students total are expected to take part in the performance. Concert Choir The Concert Choir is the largest of JFK’s auditioned groups and meets as a class during the school day. This ensemble holds various fundraisers throughout the year including Gertrude Hawk chocolate, Ashley Farms cheesecakes, and various raffles, can shakes, and bagging hours at grocery stores like ShopRite. We are currently selling bracelets similar to “Alex and Ani” Bracelets, with Kennedy Charms on them – please see Miss Scott in Room 126 to order! In January, funds acquired from our fundraisers were used to bring in the all-male a cappella group Casual Harmony from Rutgers University to perform for our Concert Choir students. We are hoping to have Casual Harmony come back March 2016 in the spring! Other acquired funds will be used for our educational spring trip – destination TBA. Chamber Choir The Chamber Choir is the smallest, most elite group of singers at JFK, consisting of only 15 students. Students must pass through two rounds of auditions in order to be a part of the Chamber Choir. In addition to the Winter Concert, this ensemble has performed at a number of community events this year, including the candlelight ceremony at Flynn & Son’s funeral home in December. They will be performing alongside the Iselin Middle School Select Choir at the Woodbridge Township School District Excellence in Education dinner on March 16. Show Choir The Show Choir, another auditioned group, performs popular music with choreography. Recently, this ensemble gave a high-energy performance at the Iselin Middle School Winter Carnival on February 20. The Show Choir will be performing at the Evergreen Senior Center in May and is currently planning a joint performance/fundraiser with the RockNRoll Chorus – a professional a cappella group – for the spring. Music in Our Schools Month Music In Our Schools Month® or “MIOSM®” is NAfME’s annual celebration during March which engages music educators, students, and communities from around the country in promoting the benefits of high quality music education programs in schools. Research has proven that access to a quality music education increases graduation rates, develops critical thinking and leadership skills, fosters self-esteem and the ability to work cooperatively, and enhances learning in other core subjects. For this reason, we are proud to be celebrating MIOSM at JFK for the first time this year. We encourage all students and faculty to follow us on Twitter and Instagram (@jfkchoirs and @JFKBands)! All month we will be posting tweets written by the students, celebrating the ways that music education has had a positive impact on their lives. Each morning, we will be sharing with you statistics which reflect the benefits of participating in your school music program. Please come by Door #2 to see our MIOSM bulletin board, and don’t forget to stop by Room 126 to get your free “JFK MIOSM” pencil, while supplies last! A State of New Jersey Best Practice School Boys’ Indoor Track Season Wrap-Up By: Coach Robert Herre The Boy’s Track team accomplished a great deal this season. We traveled to New York City and participated at the famous Armory, to Staten Island and competed in the brand new Ocean Breeze Park Track and Field Complex, and to Toms River to face off against teams from all over the state on numerous occasions. We had the most successful season for Boys’ Track in Woodbridge Township. Rahual Mahju, Wyatt Emme, Harvey Aberin, and Brandon Redd all received medals this season. Anthony Del Popolo medaled on 10 different occasions and AJ Moore 9 times. Dan Lodato and Devlin Sayles had Mustang-season bests in the Shot Put and the High Jump respectively. Prakher Chandra set a new personal record in the Mile and obtained the best times this season for our team in the Mile and 2-Mile runs. Individually and in groups, at the County and State Relays, the Mustangs brought home hardware each meet. Del Popolo, Moore, Jissnu, Brown, and Sayles all were given honors of All-Blue Division for their performances this season. We are looking forward to continue our winning tradition this spring season. Competition Cheerleading Season By: Coach Kelliann O’Brien This year the Varsity Competition Cheerleading squad was made up of 15 skilled and enthusiastic girls. The squad started off their season with workouts during the summer to get in shape for the season. These workouts included endurance training and strengthening exercises anticipating a competitively tough season for us. The girls continued practicing throughout the year four times a week, as well as, cheering at boys and girls basketball games, and competing every weekend. They performed at seven local competitions including Bishop Ahr, Woodbridge, Jackson, St. John Vianney, and David Brearley. The season ended with a trip to Ocean City, Maryland where the girls performed at the NCA National Competition. While our season didn’t go as well as we would have March 2016 wanted it to, Coach Herres and Coach O’Brien couldn’t be more proud of each girl on the team. This year the squad is losing four seniors that will truly be missed by both the coaches and teammates. The coaches wish these exceptional cheerleaders nothing but the best and good luck in all of their future endeavors. As for next year, the team has endless potential and we are looking forward to a great upcoming 2016-2017 season. All four sports awards were given to one of our well deserving underclassmen. Junior, Amanda Irizarry was crowned this year’s MVP; Junior, Destiny Hill was recognized as this year’s Most Improved Player; Sophomore, Julia Fischer was given the Sportsmanship award; and Junior, Tara Della Torre was the recipient of the Mustang award. With their heart, dedication, and hard work – we know the underclassmen will come back next year ready to win! A National & State of New Jersey Service-Learning Leader School Page John F. The Mustangs finished 2nd this year in the Blue Division with a 6-3 division record and made it to the Sweet 16 of the GMC Tournament before bowing out to Sayreville 53-44. The highlight of the season was a win on the road at Spotswood, the team that ended up winning the Blue Division championship. In this 70-65 victory, Kobie Wells scored 20 points, Peter Obertan had 16 points, and Tamaj Coleman chipped in with 14 points. The leading scorers for JFK this season were Peter Obertan with 12 PPG, Kush Patel with 9 PPG and 9 RPG, and both Tamaj Coleman and Kobie Wells finished with 8 PPG. The Mustangs will be saying farewell to three Seniors that have contributed greatly to the Boys Basketball program: Jaspreet Hari, Christian Picon, and Kush Patel. Girls’ Winter Track Team’s Hard Work Pays Off By: Coach Robert Seavy The girls’ winter track team took advantage of some mild winter weather by training hard during the early part of the season. Their efforts paid off with two dual meet victories and a second place finish in the blue division at the GMC Relays. Although they dropped a spot to third at GMC Championships, the girls enjoyed the opportunity to compete at the new Ocean Breeze indoor track facility in Staten Island. They also began the season by running at the world-renowned New York Armory, and competed in NJSIAA competitions at the Toms River Bubble. In total, the girls set five JFK winter track records this season in both relay and individual events. One athlete, sophomore Stuti Vyas, was a part of all of those records. Stuti set new marks in the 1600m and 800m runs and anchored three different relay teams. Other athletes who made great contributions to March 2016 the team were sophomore hurdler and sprinter Jackie Kelly, sophomore mid-distance runner Harvinder Kaur, junior mid-distance Gabriella Boland, and senior leaders Rujuta Patel, Fion Chan, and Kelly Edgeworth. Stuti and Jackie were both honored by the GMC coaches by being named to the All Blue Division team. With a strong set of underclassmen, the girls’ winter track team looks to build on their success in future seasons. A National & State of New Jersey Service-Learning Leader School Page John F. Success for JFK Girls’ Basketball By: Coach Nick Smith The Girls Basketball Team compiled a 11 -12 record and a 6-6 division record this season. The girls played hard throughout the season improving as each game went on. The season started off strong with a hard fought victory against Carteret and culminated in a huge upset win over the favored Spotswood March 2016 Chargers. The team qualified for both the GMC Tournament and the state tournament playing well in both contests. As the season progressed, the girls came closer together and formed a long lasting bond. Congratulations on a successful season! The coaching staff would like to wish the Seniors the best of luck in the future and thank them for all they have done for the program.
