The theme for the dance was “A Luau on the Bayou.” The cafeteria was transformed into a Hawaiian island with paper lanterns and decorations. Dads and daughters wore their favorite tropical outfits and everyone was given a lei when they arrived. They danced to a great mix of music played by DJ Pork Chop. The Bobcats even took over the stage to dance to the music! When they were tired the dads and daughters took a break to eat and drink refreshments. Mr. Colon helped serve chocolate chip cookies, cake, lemonade, and lime –sherbet punch. Students pick a Purpose/Question to get started. based on a science topic that can be questioned through testing. 4th grade students have a list of questions to pick from, so they can be creative and scientific. 5th grade students also do the same and work on experiments. “Science Fair projects were all so creative in so many ways,” said Principal Colon. “Science Fair was super fun and messy. I enjoy the playing and the fun,” said 5th grade students Kyara Forde and Sydney Hollis. PAGE 2 The World of Sports By Ishmael Patterson The new basketball courts at our school are AWESOME! The next thing we should do is put sod around them. The basketballs are bouncing into the mud and we are going out to get them and getting dirty. The kids chase the balls into the mud then they are sent to the office. Then the office workers are crowded with wet dirty children who need clean clothes. We sometimes miss lessons while waiting to get clean. Putting sod around the basketball courts will solve this dirty mess. Bobcats show your S.P.O.T.S not your spots! Race to School Rules By Travis West Jr. Students at S.L.P. are not following the rules in the bathroom, classroom, P.E. and in the cafeteria. For this reason, here is a reminder of our rules: And that’s why SPANISH LAKE PRIMARY has S.P.O.T.S. Opinion: Stay on the Sidewalk Side By: Lee Kilgore By Avery Black I’m going to tell you two great places to sign up for soccer. Soccer is also known as football in many other countries. The first place is Gonzales Soccer Club. It is located at Carver Park, Gonzales Soccer Club. Also you can contact them using this email [email protected]. The second place is Baton Rouge Soccer Club. It is located at 142 Lobdell Ave, Baton Rouge, LA. Also you can contact them using this phone number (225) 924-2157. Have you ever been in a neighborhood looking for a house in the parish and thought, ‘this looks nice. It has a sidewalk for the kids?’ Then you go to another house and think the complete opposite? Well, what’s up with that? There are a few neighborhoods in our parish that have sidewalks. The sad part is that most don’t. Well, there are no sidewalks in my neighborhood. What if people want to walk or run for exercise? What do they do then? In my subdivision people By Angelo Gonzalez On February 7, 2014, the 22nd Winter Olympic Games began in Sochi, Russia. They had 88 nations represented with 2,873 athletes participating. There were 98 events in seven sports contested. The biathlon was the most physically challenging sport because cross-country skiing is one of the best forms of exercise in the world. Other skilled events were figure skating, luge, slope style skiing, snow-boarding, half pipe skiing, and curling. The host nation, Russia, won the most medals with the United States coming in fourth. On February 23rd the Olympics ended. The 2018 Winter Olympics will be hosted by South Korea with the Summer Olympics being held in Brazil. walk or run in the streets. What if they want to ride a bike? Why ride in the streets when you can ride on a safer sidewalk? It’s not just running or biking either. What if people want to skateboard or rollerblade? That’s pretty hard to do on a street. What about a rip stick or a scooter? So why not have sidewalks in neighborhoods, it’s a great idea? For another thing, most parents are more likely to buy a house with a sidewalk in front of it. It provides a safer environment for children or adults. Sidewalks can also prevent children from the risks of playing in the roads. I understand that sidewalks can be expensive or hard to put in. However, people would be more likely to buy a house with a sidewalk in front of it. Would you rather sell less houses without sidewalks or more houses with sidewalks? My point is that sidewalks would create a happier safer neighborhood. So if there are different reasons for the prevention of sidewalks, I’d like to know them because sidewalks are a great idea. Opinion: Just Don’t Litter By Kadynn Alexander If you’re ever taking a walk and you see trash on the ground, stop, pick it up, and throw it away. We shouldn’t litter because the Earth has done so many great things for us. One thing the Earth has done for us is give us life. Next, Earth gave us food and water. Lastly, the Earth gave a home. Instead of showing the Earth respect, we have shown disrespect to the Earth by littering it. If people in the community don’t stop littering, our neighborhoods will look like a dump. For example, when the wind blows, so much of the litter can be blown to other places like the beach. Let’s say that a crab thought that plastic rings were food, and they tried to pick them up. They could get stuck on the crab’s claw and annoy him. Also, the litter can go in the sea and some of the animals might think it is food. They can get sick, choke, or even die. So don’t litter! You can do the three R’s: reuse, recycle, and reduce. When you reuse, you can make and get new things. When you recycle, you can get brand new things. And if the recycle men keep reducing, you can get new things you probably like. So don’t litter. Throw away your trash and reuse things that you can. Also, recycle plastic. That helps us to keep reducing. Remember, kids, don’t litter! VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE Student Spotlights By Olivia Vroon By Molly Anderson By Sophia Horridge Westley Lazenby is a new kid in school. Book reviews By Karlie Lobell By Abby Lobell I liked Flora and Ulysses because the book was heartwarming I disliked Flora and Ulysses because I really dislike non-fiction and the whole family can enjoy it. “Wa Fump!” It all started books. FLORA AND ULYSSES by Kate DiCamillo By Abby Lobell I disliked Locomotive because it had very dull picture es and the words were kind of hard to read. It was about people riding a train and what you can do on a train. It was also about how a train works and the people who run the train. Locomotive would be better if it had more intere sting pictures with brighter colors. Locomotive was not a very good book in my opinion. LOCOMOTIVE by Brian Floca By Karlie Lobell There’s a book called Locomotive about the journey it takes to be on a train with people in the 18th century. Personally I think it doesn’t show a point of view. It was not funny. It wasn’t sad. It’s plain. It was the 2014 Caldecott winner, though, so you might like it. But I don’t think so, because I didn’t.
