Crete has always been a crossroads of the world old maritime roads

INTRODUCTION
Crete has always been a crossroads of the world old
maritime roads of the Mediterranean Sea. It resembles
like a continent inhabited by strange stubborn peoples.
There was a meeting point of different experiences, a
melting pot of old and heterogeneous cultures.
It has a history of centuries, with roots that are lost in the beginning of the myths.
Here had born Zeus, father of gods and humans in Greek mythology. Here he had coupled secretly,
with the beautiful nymph Europe who gave her name in our continent.
Crete managed in the passage of centuries but also under the pressure of foreigner conquerors to maintain up today
unchanged the particular characteristics of the local culture and popular tradition the roots of which reach to the Minoan era.
Expressions of the local popular culture are the mores and customs of the indigenes the traditional celebrations and festivals
that are still alive.
In Crete coexist harmoniously the inhospitable
barren and severe mountainous landscape with
fertile green plains, the golden of the beach with the
deep blue sea and all together with the sunny blue
sky in a unique harmony.
In Crete you will find all the kinds of vegetation zones each one with its own special plant and animal kingdom.
CLIMATE
Crete with the 300 days of sunshine has one of the healthiest
climates in Europe. The temperate Mediterranean climate prevails in
the bigger part of the island but in the wintry months snowfalls occur
in the mountains. Rainfalls are high in the west and are decreased to
the east.
Prevailed winds are northwest while in the summer the “meltemi”
a north wind ensures satisfactory dew and ideal conditions for the
friends of Surfing. In the summer often blows a hot southern wind
which is called (Livas or sirocco).
Generally winters are mild in Crete, spring and autumn sweet and
pleasant, the summers sunny and warm.
The morphology, the geography and the climate compose an
idyllic place where reigns the balance of the nature.
