From the down the Road at the Oklahoma City National H.O.G. Rally!!
Before I left home to ride to the OKC Rally I looked at several maps and decided to challenge
myself to get to OKC without ever riding a freeway. According to my GPS software, I was going
to turn a 1300 mile ride into a 1660 mile ride but, what the heck, I had time. I’ll tell you about it
if you want to keep reading.
I left home and headed out toward Victorville and Hwy 18 thru Apple Valley, Lucerne Valley
on Hwy 18 and 247 and Hwy 62 thru Yucca Valley, Twenty Nine Palms and Joshua tree. I
crossed the Colorado River at Parker Arizona and then south and east a bit before turning north
on Hwy’s 71 and 89 toward Prescott. The ride up to Prescott’s 7000 feet above sea level was
beautiful (and the heat level came down a LOT). At one point on the very winding road I stopped
at an overlook at could see the whole Joshua tree valley below me. Very nice. I made it to
Payson, Az. for the night. Lots of Pine trees and cooler weather was nice.
I stayed at altitude and cooler riding along Hwy 260 to Show Low, Az and then Hwy 60 into
New Mexico. I was looking forward to Pie Town (Peter, Brian Turnbull, and John Rost will
know about aptly named Pie Town). :=) I stayed with Hwy 60 to Socorro and there is where my
“No Freeways” plan went in the toilet. One map I had showed a road south that would bypass I25 south to Hwy 380. It was only 7 miles of freeway but the bypass around was 40 miles which
wouldn’t have been bad but the map DIDN’T tell me that it was a bad dirt road (oh well, you
won’t hold 7 miles of freeway against me will you?). A bit sad, I continued on to Roswell, NM
for the night. Continued on Hwy 380 clear across New Mexico and into Texas passing south of
Lubbock and picked up Hwy 277 north east to Wichita Falls for another night on the road (I
could have made it on to OKC but it was HOT and I was tired). From Wichita Falls, I picked up
Hwy 81 north toward OKC and some of the surrounding towns where some of my cousins live.
Had a nice visit with them then on to OKC and the rally.
I had dinner with Kim Briggs . Many of you will remember her but you probably won’t know
that she is now the GENERAL MANAGER of the same dealership that “fired” her as the
Chapter Director a few years ago. In time the cream rises to the top (old Okie saying) :=)
I saw the eblast/info about 5 Million Mile Monday. I will be heading toward Chama, New
Mexico and plan to log about 500 miles for the day. I hope you all log a LOT also.

Too much fun! The L.O.H. Progressive Breakfast Ride had 52 H.O.G. members in
attendance and what better way to spend a Saturday morning than to ride & eat!
“There’s only one thing better”!!!! And, yes, the route was a little crazy to each of the
homes, but…you can’t say it was boring!
Terry & Ray Crawford shared their home and welcomed us with coffee, juice, fresh
fruit & muffins, along with a beautiful backyard setting, “babbling stream” and a sign at
their front door to welcome us. Then on to Patty Walker’s home, in Oak Park, to rumble
around her neighborhood. She graciously served some real “southern style” cooking
with egg casseroles, sausages, biscuits & gravy and, of course, more coffee. After
crawling through the traffic, back to the west side of Ventura, we arrived at the home
of Susan Van Abel & Eric Oltmann. The lemon bars, brownies, blueberry buckle,
chocolate truffles and, of course, more coffee were just the “sugar rush” we all
needed. And, let’s not forget the spectacular view from their backyard! Sure makes
you realize what a wonderful H.O.G. Chapter & L.O.H. we are so fortunate to belong to.
And, for those of you who did not join us…we hope to see you next year on this
awesome ride.
And…I’m excited to see several new female faces around our Chapter and at our L.O.H.
meetings. Remember, you do NOT need to “ride” to actively participate in L.O.H.
Female passengers (and their riders) are always welcome. Come join us at our next
meeting the first Monday of every month, 7:00pm, at Round Table Pizza in Camarillo.
Bring your smile, new ideas and any riding experiences to share.

For locations/groups/companies that go above
and beyond in planning a ride or event for our
chapter, it was suggested about presenting
them a plaque. This is separate from our Ride
Master program and is for recent events such
as Simi H.O.G. picnic and Hi Cees BBQ
Appreciation. The costs of plagues are
roughly $14 so it was suggested about doing
just a certificate. Rick will discuss with Susan
about creating a design/template for these.
Rick will write a letter of appreciation for the
Simi H.O.G. to publish in their newsletter.

Kathy presented an updated flier regarding the
Ride Master program and planning a Ride.
These will be given to individuals interested in
planning a ride/event for the chapter and gives
guidelines for making it successful. There
were 4 Tri Tips left over from Kern so it was
suggested to raffle of names of those who
were at Kern and if they are at the meeting
they can take one home. We are looking for a
volunteer to lead our ride for Million Mile
Monday.

Upcoming Progressive Breakfast has roughly
50 members signed up for it. There is a
shortage of available road captains that will be
attending. Les will incorporate using those in
training as drag.

POT was shared with the board… Action
Items that is. Kathy and Sabrina will work
together on preparing a survey for the chapter
members. It will be an updated version of the
one from a few years ago. With the upcoming
elections and Activities Officer being one of
the positions up, Kathy will put together a
proposal for July or August meeting regarding
opening up for a 2nd Activities Officer position.

June Meeting. Job assignments were given out to
all board members to assist with membership
renewals. Greeters will be Rick, Nadine, Les and
Linda. Membership Table will be worked by
Sabrina, Mike, Kathy, Rob and Robert. New
Member Table to be worked by Leslie. PreRegistered Table (currently 15-20 people) will be
worked by Susan. Joanne and Darryl will maintain
their regular spots (lucky ducks). It was discussed
that we ensure there are no duplicate meal tickets
given out. Those who have already pre-registered
will only be no that list to avoid going to the other
table.

Advertising in the Hogwash has shown success
after the first month. Total of $125 was collected
for those advertising in June Hogwash. Should
there be a question on a business that conflicts with
our sponsoring dealer, we will obtain approval from
Tracey or Jason prior to publishing.

SPPR/GDA donation will be given out at June meeting.
Terry Crawford confirmed individuals from GDA will be
attending to accept the chapter’s donation. Joanne will
write the check that day to present to them.

The chapter’s annual action will be held at the July
chapter meeting. Rick needs help (what’s new) with
presenting the items. Susan and Joanne to work
together on logging the winners and amounts to be
collected. Kathy and Mike volunteered to help with
auction item presentations. Sue Penner had presented
to Rick about donating her cookies and asked that the
proceeds be given towards a particular member. To
avoid setting precedence on future requests as this, it
will be suggested that Sue can do a bake sale during the
auction to collect the money for her donation to the
member.
There are two guests attending June meeting to discuss
upcoming rides/events: Bill Davis and Dan Fine. They
were informed of normal 3 minutes to talk to members.
(There’s a faint odor in the room… I think Robert didn’t
shower….)
10. Rick will be gone for September meetings.
Sabrina will be in charge… you have been
warned!

I was driving my motorcycle very slowly
down the highway. A State Trooper pulls
me over.
"What have I done wrong, officer?"
•
Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the
national animal but was outvoted when John
Adams and Thomas Jefferson chose the bald
eagle.

Over an estimated 150 million hot dogs will be
consumed today. That's roughly 1 dog for every
two people in the U.S.
•
Over $211 million has been spent on the
importation of fireworks from China.
•
Oddly, the majority of the nation's flags and
patriotic paraphernalia in relation to the 4th of
July are produced in China. Nearly $349 million
dollars are used each year to import in the flags,
banners, decorations, and emblems.
•
The first 4th of July party held at the White
House was in 1801.
•
The words Under God were not added to the
Pledge of Allegiance until the year 1954.
•
The 4th of July was not declared a national
holiday until 1941.
•
The national anthem is actually set to the
tune of an old English drinking song called
To Anacreon in Heaven
I asked.
"You are going 26mph on a major
highway. There is a law against that," the
officer says to the driver. "You must go at
least 50mph."
"But when I turned on the highway, the
sign said 26!"
"HA HA HA!" The officer laughs out loud.
"That is because this is Interstate 26!
The 26 isn't the speed limit!"
The cop looked to the back seat and saw
Sue sitting behind me. She looked as
pale as a ghost.
"What happened to her?" the officer asks.
"I don't know, but she has been that way
ever since we got off of interstate 160."

I was on my Harley stops at a stoplight and a
guy on a scooter pulls up next to me.
The guy on the scooter leans over and takes
an admiring look at my Harley and tells me
that he has a really bike.
Well, the light turned green so I pull out very
fast deciding to show off and peels out and
leaves the guy on the scooter in the dust.
Then, all of a sudden, I see the scooter zip on
past me. So, being a little cocky, I floor the
bike again and blows past the guy on the
scooter. A few seconds later, I again see the
scooter zip on past me.
So now I am a little irate as well as a little
miffed that that scooter keeps passing me so
I floored my bike it until he is going over 100
mph.
I think to myself that there would be no way
that scooter could catch me now, but then I
look in the rearview mirror and see that
scooter starting to catch up.
I then decide to find out what that scooter
really is and slams on his brakes. Then the
scooter crashes into the Porsche. After the
dust settled, I see the scooter driver lying in
the road and I go over to him and ask him
how he could go as fast as the Harley on a
little wimpy scooter...
The dying man replied, "I can't really, but my
suspenders were caught on your side
mirror...."
