Business Sweden, Ekelundsgatan 1, Göteborg
Welcome to a seminar during which we will take a close look at the vast business
opportunities in Maghreb, and how to do business in these countries. Learn more about the
latest development in different sectors such as ICT, Urban Transport, Energy, Oil and gas,
Construction, Mining and how Swedish companies can be part of the these growing markets.
Algeria is the fourth largest economy in Africa, after Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt.
The petroleum industry is the single most important industry in the country and
Algeria has significant reserves of natural gas and oil.
Algeria is an important
trading partner of Sweden and roughly 20 Swedish companies are represented in the
country. Swedish exports to Algeria has nearly tripled over the last 10 years, and amounted
in 2013 to 3.3 billion, and consisted mainly of wood and engineering products. There are a
fair amount of business opportunities for Swedish companies, primarily in the oil and gas,
infrastructure, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and ICT.
Morocco has a mixed economy based largely on light industry, tourism and
agriculture. Since the 1990s, economic reforms and investments in tourism have led to
improved government finances and Morocco in recent years has had an average high
economic growth. Around twenty Swedish subsidiaries are established in Morocco, mainly in
telecoms and industry. Swedish exports to Morocco have more than doubled over the past
ten years, and amounted to 2.7 billion in 2013. There are a large amount of business
opportunities in Morocco for Swedish companies, especially in construction, clean tech and
energy efficiency, infrastructure, wood and ICT.
In the context of a political and security crisis, Tunisia registered moderate growth of
2.6% in 2013. Growth is likely to accelerate in the calmer climate brought about by the
adoption of a new constitution, and the formation of a new government. Tourism,
petroleum and mining industries, as well as textile production, are the main industries
of Tunisia. Sweden mainly exports ICT products, wood and vehicles to Tunisia. In 2013
Swedish exports to Tunisia amounted to 742 million, and has remained constant over the
past decade. Swedish imports from Tunisia comprised the greatest proportion of engineering
products and amounted in 2013 to 162 million. There are over 15 Swedish companies
established in Tunisia. Business opportunities for Swedish export companies are to be found
mainly within medical devices and pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, clean tech, textiles,
infrastructure and transport.
