Childbirth Education
At Renown Children's Hospital, we have professional childbirth educators whose mission is to
support families with evidence-based options in childbirth to promote safe and positive
personalized birth experiences. Education and communication encourages discussion
between families and caregivers to ensure an optimal pregnancy, childbirth and parenting
experience.

Childbirth Education (Great Expectations) - There are two types of Childbirth Education
Classes - a traditional five-week series or an All-in-a-Day course. Our classes fill up quickly so
early registration is recommended. This class will help prepare you for your birthing
experience. Emphasis is on relaxation and breathing techniques, labor support, variations of
labor and birth, and options for medication and anesthesia, cesarean sections and
postpartum. This class includes a tour.
Gestational Diabetes - This is a two-session program that is designed to keep moms and
their babies healthy during pregnancy. The class includes information on meal planning, blood
sugar monitoring, the loan of diabetes equipment and follow-up support
Baby & Family Suites Tours - Tour our Baby & Family Suites, Labor & Delivery and our
William N. Pennington Nursery. You will also learn more about the pre-admission process,
where to check-in and what to expect during your visit.
Sibling Class - This fun class is a great way to introduce and prepare big brothers and
sisters. Your child will learn how to change diapers, practice feeding and dressing a baby. A
tour of the newborn nursery is also included. This class is for children ages two-to-ten and
must be accompanied by a parent.
Medications for Birth - This complimentary class is a medical interventions for pain
management class that will address the source of labor pain, a person's natural reaction to
pain, and also medical interventions that can be used to decrease the pain. IV pain
medication, epidural anesthesia, and spinal anesthesia will be discussed. If available, an
anesthesiologist will attend.
A New Beginning (postpartum care for mom and baby) - This complimentary class will
help prepare you for the first few days and weeks after birth. You will learn what to expect
after delivery, how your body is healing, warning signs, and when to call your doctor. This
class will help expedite your discharge. We recommend taking this class prior to delivery.
The Lactation Connection – Located at the Shops at Renown, across from Starbucks at
Renown Regional Medical Center. Come by before you have your baby and meet our
Lactation Liaison. She will help you sort out all-things breastfeeding - from products including
bras and pumps to resources if you face challenges. We will help you meet your
breastfeeding goals.
Moveable Feast/Breastfeeding Basics - This class will help you get off to a good start by
learning proper breastfeeding techniques and how to avoid common breastfeeding
challenges.
Breastfeeding Forum (support group for moms) - Led by a board-certified lactation
consultant, you will discuss successes and challenges of breastfeeding. A scale is available
for you to weigh your baby weekly.
Breastfeeding: The Next Phases – This complimentary class is for moms who are
breastfeeding, but moved beyond latch, growth and intake and are curious what’s next.
Introducing Solids – Led by a Registered Dietitian, this class will be helpful whether you’re
thinking about introducing solids, or concerned that your baby isn't getting enough/too much
solids. You’ll also learn about moving from breastfeeding to more table foods at one year.
Infant Care (Baby Basics) - In this class you will learn how to care for your newborn:
diapering, swaddling, cord care, bathing, signs of illness and when to call the doctor are just a
few of topics covered in this class.
Infant CPR - Learn the special skills needed to help an infant in distress.
The Happiest Baby on the Block - Learn an extraordinary approach to keeping your baby
happy. In our Happiest Baby Class, new parents will learn step-by-step how to help their baby
sleep better and how to soothe even the fussiest baby in minutes…even seconds.
Northern Nevada Fitting Station – Three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly. The
Northern Nevada Child Passenger Safety Seat Fitting Station is the region’s first full-time
facility to offer child vehicle safety restraint education, inspection and installation. For more
