In music, circles—or Os—denote full, perfect measures; the interjection “O” or “Oh” was thought to capture the many movements of the soul; the saying “Giotto’s Circle,” existing since the fourteenth century, was coined after the artist Giotto painted a perfect circle in a single stroke. These sentences describe just a few of the many uses of the letter O throughout history. This circular letter comes from the Greek letter O micron, which means “Little O” and is typically contracted into Omicron today. While the history of the letter is varied, it stands as the only letter which forces a speaker to mimic the shape of it in their mouth in order to pronounce it.
