Students read silently Abandoned Farmhouse and mark uses of poetic devices while determining mood and completing text rendering activity. Read aloud Abandoned Farmhouse Students complete character analysis: what lines reveal things about each of the characters? Discuss. Discuss use of poetic devices. Students answer: what happened at this farm? What happened to this family? What is the general mood of the poem? (Include discussion of ambiguity) ASSIGNMENT: write a brief poem imitating the style of Abandoned Farmhouse, using your bedroom as the setting. What do the items in your bedroom say about you to someone who might stumble across them? Is there a difference? Share. Students read Deserted Farm, marking use of similes and metaphors. Read poem aloud Students share similes and metaphors found: what do they indicate? What pictures and ideas do they create? Students determine mood/moods of the poem. Complete venn diagram, comparing and contrasting Abandoned Farmhouse and Deserted Farm. Friday, January 6 Objectives: Apply the use of transitions in writing Compare and contrast two poems Procedure: Review transitions in writing: to change from paragraph to paragraph, to set up examples, to continue examples, to show differences. Provide students with a list of transitions for each situation. Introduce writing assignment: compare and contrast Abandoned Farmhouse with Deserted Farm. Provide model topic sentences. Provide time for students to draft essays.
