There is still, however, one phase of t h e drill which we believe should be made more explicit t o t h e men. That is t h e question of cuts. This confusion resulted from t h e direct contradiction of t h e order of President Gallup, which read t h a t t h e usual number of cuts would be allowed, b y the instructors in charge, who said t h a t no cuts could be taken. This naturally led to a s t a t e of u t t e r uncertainty, and as conditions a r e now, no one knows just what is expected. This is the real reason of our being in college, and it should receive our .first and most earnest attention; in importance it stands above everything else. W e believe i t would be well for every member of t h e first-year class to m a k e a careful examination of himself, a s t o whether he is giving t h e proper amount of time and attention to t h e essential college work. If not, he himself and n o one else is t h e loser. H e will g e t out of his college education exactly w h a t he puts into it in t i m e %nd energy diligently applied to t h e lessons assigned. If h e h a s n o t already realized this fact, i t i s n o t y e t too late to make <a fresh s t a r t and g e t t o work. Even if he has fallen down thus far, there is still time to "make good" before the mid-year examinations; b u t further delay is likely to prove fatal to his college career. Every d a y lost will m a k e his task so much t h e harder. A college education has been well likened t o a n investment. The student is investing his time, his money, and his services; and a t present the inv e s t m e n t is doubly precious, under t h e s e w a r conditions.
