Julius Caesar Synopsis
Caesar has returned in triumph from the war against Pompey,
though tribunes Marullus and Flavius express their discontent to
the people at the outcome. During the celebrations, a soothsayer
warns Caesar to beware the Ides of March. Cassius and Brutus
discuss their fears that Caesar’s ambition is to become queen,
despite learning from Casca that she had refused the people’s offer
of the crown.
Casca, Cassius, and Cinna meet during a stormy night that has
been full of unnatural events, and agree the need to win Brutus
over to their cause: the elimination of Caesar. Brutus meanwhile
has been reflecting on the dangers of having Caesar crowned.
When the conspirators arrive at Brutus' house she agrees to the
assassination plot. She is reluctant to reveal her intentions to her
wife, Portia, but yields to her persuasion.
Caesar’s wife Calpurnia, frightened by dreams and omens, tries to
persuade Caesar not to go to the Capitol. She agrees, but Decius
reinterprets the omens in a favourable light, and she decides to go,
disregarding a warning on the way from Artemidorus. When Caesar
refuses to grant Metellus Cimber’s suit, the conspirators kill him.
Caesar’s friend Mark Antony meets the conspirators, who allow her
to speak at Caesar’s funeral following Brutus’ own speech. Brutus
justifies their action to the citizens and receives their support, but
Antony’s speech rouses them against the conspirators. Brutus and
Cassius flee. The angry people kill Cinna the poet, mistaking her for
Cinna the conspirator.
Antony forms a triumvirate with Octavius, Caesar, and Lepidus.
They plan the deaths of the conspirators and form an army. Brutus
and Cassius join forces at Sardis, agreeing to fight together at
Philippi after a fierce personal quarrel. Messala brings news of
happenings at Rome, and reports that Portia has killed herself.
Caesar’s ghost visits Brutus at night and warns her that she will
meet Brutus at Philippi.
The two sides parley, then the battle begins. Thinking they are
defeated, Cassius orders her servant Pindarus to kill her. He does
so, but it is then revealed that the news was misleading, as Brutus
had gained an advantage. A further battle leads to Brutus’ defeat,
and she too commits suicide. Antony and Octavius acknowledge
Brutus’ nobility, and arrange to bury her with honour. Octavius’
reign as Emperor begins.

Fraternal Order of Eagles
Host of the Ryerson School of Performance’s Social Events
Maple Leaf Aerie 2311 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE),
chartered in Toronto in 1938, is steps from Ryerson University and has
been a long-standing supporter of the
Ryerson School of Performance and the
Performance Production students. The
founding of the FOE in 1898 was a result
of the collaboration between a Seattle
theatre owner and one of the largest
travelling vaudeville circuits in the United
States.
Soon after the founding of the FOE, the
new Northwest District of what would
become the International Association of Theatre and Stage Employees
(IATSE) realized that, by joining the FOE, they could use their lodges,
called Aeries, to help resolve labour issues with the producers of the
shows, as well as between local people and those who travelled with
the shows. Using the rapidly multiplying Eagles’ lodges throughout the
United States and Canada, the Northwest District proposed a labour
arrangement with the founders of the FOE whereby the Union would
assume responsibility for supplying the myriad performance production
staff required by the shows. By 1913, the Eagles had more than one
million members and IATSE had adopted the labour-supply idea, still
called Yellow Card Shows (Eagles membership cards are yellow),
throughout North America.
Although the FOE and IATSE are no longer connected in any way, their
initial collaboration assured a strong future for both organizations. The
Eagles are proud that our mutually-beneficial relationship has come full
circle at 17 Elm Street.
