March 4 and 5, 2015 Literature – To Kill a Mockingbird Students took a quiz on chapters 4-6 of To Kill a Mockingbird Read chapters 7-9 for next time. Students received two quotations from the beginning of the novel. For each one, students are to explain what it means and write a brief response to it. We discussed the quotations when finished. Describe the following characters SO FAR in the novel (character, not looks): Atticus, Scout, Jem. o Use quotations to support your descriptions. o This may be done individually or in small groups (up to 4 people) o We discussed this and then turned it in. Logical Fallacies We discussed logical fallacies (flaws in logic). We then watched a video introducing five logical fallacies: Red Herring, Ad Hominem, Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc, Ad Misericordiam, Bandwagon. o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmIb2Jb-KC8 Students took notes, and we discussed the flaws. For next time, students should find examples (t.v., magazines, news articles…) of at least four of the fallacies. o Either bring in the examples, or write down a description of each. o Say which fallacy it is and how it fits the definition of that flaw in logic. Language Practice Students did a practice language assessment. (Pickles) We went over it when finished. Students had the rest of the period to read To Kill a Mockingbird.
