The Chowder Chatter The Official Newsletter of The Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society Cape Coral / Fort Myers, Florida www.cmcs-sail.org Next Full Moon: September 8 P.O. Box 101268, Cape Coral, Fl. 33910 September, 2014 Commodore’s Message Hello, Summer Dreamers, Hope everyone is enjoying their summer vacations! Ray, Breeze, and I are loving the cooler temps of the Smoky Mountains; and Allen Fiske, our Vice Commodore, has gotten to "try on" the Commodore Commodore Cap for a few meetings. I hear Diane Fowler he is doing a fabulous job! Along with many others: Gary & Jean Blessing hosted the Parrothead Cruise at Tween Waters and got RAVE REVIEWS. Susan Reekie is looking for a few more folks to help hosting 2015 cruises. Wendy Cook did a bang up presentation at the last Board Meeting - outlining several money saving options for Yearbook 2015. Also, rumor has it - Joe Barch, owner of Felix Marine - wowed the crowd with his informative tips to prevent lightning damage to our boats. Al Eastman held a wonderful cookout at the July picnic; but due to health reasons, he has had to resign as Chairman of the Liberty Ashore committee. Al has helped a lot this year and been the LEADER for many delicious events. Lucky for US, Jen Barch, has volunteered to step into this role. CALL JEN TODAY to help her with the fun and FOOD. Also, thanks to ALL for keeping the club running this summer! September brings much FUN: Mel Rudd leads the "where the wind blows" cruise to Naples; and the Kayusa Cup race kicks off the racing season. Of course, we are ALL planning to attend the HUGE event of the year: Summerset Regatta, October 10 -12. Plenty of fun for racers, cruisers, and land yachts alike. Make it a special weekend aboard your boat, or book a luxury room at the Pink Shell, our host. Visit: www.SummersetRegatta.com for all the "scoop". Also, lets start planning more CLUB DAY SAILS ! The Naples club has had much success with this and CMCS dabbled in it this last spring. We met at the Pink Shell docks for lunch & then sailed back to home ports. Many of our club members reminded me that they work Monday - Friday; so I think 2 day sails per month should be perfect: one on a WEEKDAY for those of us with more flexible schedules, and another on a WEEKEND day for our friends who work during the week. Sound good? I know many of you keep your boats UP river & a day sail to the Gulf is not possible. Maybe one day, we can all sail UP RIVER to use the FREE dockage of the city of Fort Myers Docks?? Did you know you can dock there FREE until 10 pm? We could all meet and walk to a lunch spot? Or, bring lunches and tie up at the island there? USE YOUR IMAGINATION, people! WE can invite club members who don't have boats new people who need to experience the MAGIC of sailing, children, potential crew members.....the list goes on! Steve Roake always says, "Our boat sails 6, feeds 4, but sleeps only 2". Our fleet is 50+ sailboats strong - get out and show your yacht off! Call Commodore Diane if you would like to be in charge of ONE DAYSAIL. Start thinking about which committee or Board Position you may be interested in. **See article about election procedures*** September 12 – 14 is the Kayusa Cup Race/Cruise. The cruisers usually sail to the South Seas Resort on Friday and the racers arrive Saturday sometime depending on the wind. I don't think any boat has ever been late for the 5 o'clock happy hour. Reservations for a slip are a must, as this is one of SouthRear Commodore-Cruising west Florida's premier reJohn Reekie sorts. Dan & Debbie Merriman have a flyer in this edition with all the details. After you make your reservation directly with the resort marina give them a call or e-mail to let them know you will be joining them. Then, upcoming in December, the Commodore's Cup Dinner has been changed!! MARK YOUR CALENDARS - as I know how hectic the holiday season can be. The RACE is still on for Dec. 6 Saturday; but the dinner is now moved to SUNDAY, Dec. 7 at LaVenezia Banquet Hall in downtown Cape Coral. (Same venue as the Change of Watch Dinner last January). The CMCS Board has voted to subsidize $10 per ticket! So, the sumptuous buffet; appetizers, and OPEN BAR for 2 full hours will only set you back $20 each!!! SUCH A DEAL! We can do this because we are saving the $825 room rental fee from the CCYC!! And, always remember Mark Twain's famous quote, "Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you did NOT do than by the ones you did do. So, throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the wind in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." Summerset is next month, October 10th- 12th. Our membership has been great as we are on the road to record contributions in both boat name and corporate sponsorships. Congratulations! Your contributions to youth sailing have been very much appreciated by the children, parents, Edison Sailing Center and the other youth sailVice Commodore- ing programs that we contribute Summerset to. Over $13,000 has been disSteve Romaine tributed this year to programs from which the sponsor donations come from and the homeport of the participants. This support, year after year, has enabled this club to win a national award from U.S. Sailing for “Outstanding Organizational Support 2012.” Everyone needs to come to this meeting and participate in the Summerset Regatta by land or by sea and hopefully both. Expect this year’s Summerset will be full of surprises. It is even going to be HUGER than the 61 boats that participated last year. Last-minute contributions can be made until September 19th, then we have to lay out and print the 275 regatta T-shirts with corporate logos and boat and corporate names. Updates: The new Pink Shell Marina has received 24 reservations to date. Dave O’Connor, dock master, is going to try to get everyone in but as of now he is putting additional boats on a wait list. There is still plenty of room at Moss Marine, Salty Sam’s and Gulf Star Marina at special regatta rates of $1.25 per foot. We are asking each boat at Ft. Myers Beach to dress ship with brag, signal, sports, etc. flags for this, the 49th Summerset Regatta. The entry/Notice-of-Race/order form has been mailed out to over 300 sailors. Jerry Canning has been receiving them back already. Wouldn’t it be great for the organizers if they would be received early? You might even be guaranteed the shirt size you order! September’s monthly meeting: Don’t forget to come to the September 16th meeting at the Cape Coral Yacht Club at 6:30 PM. This meeting, entitled “Kickoff to Summerset” will feature: Prize for the oldest Summerset T-shirt Prize for the most used (tattered/torn/ paint stained) Summerset T-shirt A Summerset Trivia Contest with prizes A Summerset cake Tropical music Photos of past Summersets The presentation of the West Marine Check from the last Community Day will be presented to the Edison Sailing Center Summerset Raffle Tickets are already available from Suzanne Aguilera. See the flyer in this newsletter for information on how to obtain yours! Do you have any Dacron sails to donate to Summerset? If you do, please contact me and I will pick them up from you. We will get them to Ella Vickers, Inc., and they will be converted into great door prizes. Thanks! It’s not too early to begin thinking about the 50th anniversary Summerset Golden Jubilee in 2015! Planning has already begun! It’s gonna be HUGEST! Happy Sailing! Steve Romaine – Vice Commodore, Summerset Regatta CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2014 Page 4 Margaritaville Cruise Recap Margaritaville Cruise Recap (cont’d) CMCS’s third annual “Meet Us in Margaritaville” cruise began on August 8th at noon (hey, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere!) Cruisers were welcomed with souvenir margarita glasses filled with that immortal concoction. Friday’s arrivals included Free Spirit (soon to be known as Gone with the Wind), Miller Time, Sea Mist, I Sheet You Knot, Tanglef o o t , S w e e t Baboo, Jazzy, Freestyle, Air Supply, Mental Floss and Trust Me!!! All settled in at Margaritaville North and got together at 5 O’Clock for Buffett-inspired appetizers and more margaritas. All rose to their feet for the national anthem of “Margaritaville.” Some left for dinner, others just hung out with DeeDee’s Buffett banners – I’m tellin’ you it’s like he was there! Our last event turned out to be “Fill the Margarita Glass” another game which called upon contestants to be resourceful and inventive, using water from the Gulf to fill glasses from 6 feet away. In the end, we had three first place teams: Linda and Ric k ( Men ta l Floss), Steve and Cindy, and Jim and Bev. Mother Nature interrupted our games with a magnificent storm brewing on the Gulf, so, erring on the side of caution, the final game was called. Contestants left the beach with baited breath, wondering what incredible prize they might have won! Saturday morning at 10 AM, the competition began for fabul o u s prizes! The first event was a Water Balloon Catch with DeeDee and Tim (Miller T i m e ) coming in third place, Joe and Denise (I Sheet You Knot) in second, and Steve and Cindy (Air Supply) in first. Badminton Volley was the next event with Joe and Denise coming in third, Glen (Freestyle) and Waite (Tanglefoot) in second, and Bev and Jim (Sweet Baboo) in first place. Following an afternoon of relaxing and pooling, Parrotheads gathered at 5 O’Clock for libations and appetizers, partying in true Buffett style. Tom and Linda Koenig arrived by land to join the fun. This year there was an added event: Bubbles to Buffett. Let’s just say Steve “Bubbles” Romaine stole the show! Not to be outdone, Kristie (Sea Mist) gave Steve a run for his money! Cheeseburgers in Paradise were served and an incredible array of Buffett- inspired side dishes were enjoyed. Junior Mints! I want my Junior Mints!! After the repast, Buffett Trivia and Name that Buffett Tune provided some fun and music, with contestants vowing to study up before next year! It was every sailor for him/herself, with amazing prizes! Sunday morning, Jimmy Buffett’s referenced Café du Monde opened with our own Linda Eggers preparing fresh beignets! Coffee was served and breakfast shared. It was an incredible spread. Then all boarded their vessels and headed home to their own Particular Harbor to await next year’s festivities. Remember: We are the People our parents warned us about! Gary and Jean Blessing CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2014 Summerset Cruise Page 5 Ladies Bridge Club Mark your calendar: Summerset Regatta – October 10th -12th. There are plenty of activities for nonracers. Sail down and anchor out in the Fort Myers Beach Mooring Field and come ashore at The Matanzas Inn’s dinghy dock under the bridge. Shoreside facilities are available at the Inn. You don’t need to bring a boat! Become a “Land Cruiser” and come out to join in all the fun! Entering the Regatta as a cruiser (by land or yacht) has many advantages. Each entry receives one complimentary tee shirt, access to the Skippers Meeting where Cruisers door prizes will be awarded to those lucky Cruiser Entrants, Complimentary Cocktail Party tickets for your entire “crew”, and an opportunity to join in the festivities at the Awards Dinner. The following Marinas have offered a special Summerset Regatta rate in the past. Make your reservations early as these marinas fill up fast! Pink Shell Resort & Marina 239-463-8620 and ask for special regatta rate for dockage reservations made before Sept. 25th. Fort Myers Beach Mooring Field – Matanzas Inn – 239-463-9258 To get complete mooring field information Google Fort Myers Beach Mooring Field. Matanzas Inn asks that you call when you reach the bridge and they will assign you a mooring ball that will accommodate the size of your boat. You will need a dinghy; there is no transportation to and from any of the events from the mooring field or any of the marinas. FYI - you will need to complete a registration form when you register at the Inn and you’ll need to have your boat registration and insurance policy numbers. If you want a copy of a map of the mooring fields please contact me. Under the current bylaws, the 1st Vice Commodore has the responsibility to submit this article in August for the September Chowder Chatter each year explaining how the process works. There are two ways a candidate can be nominated for a Flag Officer or Director position. The first way is that the Club Development Committee can nominate them and the second way is that any member in good standing can nominate them. Historically, the Nominating Committee operated on a 3 month basis. On November 12th 2013 the Board expanded this Committee to a 12 month Club Development Committee “CDC”. The Club Development Committee “CDC” consists in part of a past commodore, two current directors and two members from the general membership. If you are interested in serving on the CDC, contact the 1st Vice-Commodore. The Commodore will also solicit interest from the floor at the general membership meetings for members interested in serving on the Club Development Committee “CDC”. At the September and October General meeting(s) of CMCS, the Commodore will review the process of selecting the Officers and Directors for the coming year. The Commodore will also encourage that written nominations for Flag Officers and Director positions be submitted to the CDC no later than November 1. The Nomination form is available on the CMCS Web site, and published in the September and October Chowder Chatter. You can nominate yourself, in fact you will notice that you have to sign the form and another member in good standing has to sign the form. We do not want someone nominated who does not want to serve. The Club Development Committee meets throughout the year to prepare a Nomination slate of Officers and Directors, and will report that slate as a recommendation of the CDC at the November Board Meeting. No action may be taken by the Board other than to accept or reject the recommendation of the CDC before the December General Meeting of the Society. In the event that the CDC Club Development Committee does not select a nominated candidate provided from the general membership for its’ own slate of Officers and Directors, that nominated candidate shall still be included and placed on the ballot. In other words, all properly nominated candidates will appear on the ballot. All nominations shall then be submitted by November to be published before the December Meeting of the Society. Another element to our voting process is the Credentials Committee that will actually run the election. Two members selected from the general membership, not any Flag Officer or Director, will constitute this committee. The Commodore will request volunteers at the November membership meeting. Requests for absentee ballots would be made to the Credentials Committee. The Fleet Purser and Fleet Yeoman will act as staff to the Credentials Committee. Voting is by membership, not by member. In most cases that means that each family has one vote. We anticipate that you will pick up your ballot with your name tag at the December meeting of the society. There will be provision for write in nominations. If you request an Absentee Ballot and then decide to attend the December meeting of the society, you will not get a second ballot. This process and procedure is a work in progress and may need some modifications. Our goal is to help you get more involved in the workings of your club. CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2014 Page 8 Edison Sailing Center News Recipe for Summer Fun Mix 1 part sailboat, 4 parts water, 1 part youth with multiple tablespoons of sponsors. Stir in equal parts sunshine, wind and laughter. Percolate for about two weeks. Yield: one smiling summer sailor! Thanks to CMCS members, Summerset sponsors and the dedication of Mr. Summerset – Steve Romaine – thirty more children were able to discover or re-discover a love of the water and sailing. We were delighted to welcome back CMCS family & extended family to the north shore of the Caloosahatchee, as well as some community faces of children who might never experience sailing any other way. As we recap the summer in total, we welcomed about 240 youth sailors to the north shore – 30 of whom were a direct result of YOUR efforts! Marla Parker did a superb job of tabulating and reporting the grant recipients. Did we have enough wind? Never! Did we have too much sun? Always! Did the kids learn something AND have fun at the same time? Ab-so-lutely!! We are on the north shore every Wednesday afternoon and most Saturdays (when we’re not racing) between 9:00-4:00. CMCS members are always welcome to join us on the water or on the shore! Thank you for ALL that you do to support youth sailing – not only locally, but throughout the region Stephanie Webb, Director Six of the thirty youth sailors CMCS sponsored this summer have extended their time on the water by enrolling in our Year Round Program and have already “staked out” their boat, sails and equipment to take them on a lifelong journey of enjoyment and learning. Edison Sailing Center is only their first stop along this waterway…for those who stick with it, we will recommend becoming summer “Blue Shirts” – those who help pay it forward and teach the new students; some will go on to join the Sea Scouts, an important step for those who will eventually apply to one or more of the nation’s service academies. Another handful will pursue training through US Sailing’s proven instructor courses, and others will remain on “this side” of the sail, seated on the rail, competing in national and international events. As you may recall, three of our sailors competed in national and international events this summer, logging between 4,000 and 15,000 miles each to compete in one or more events in the US and abroad. In each case, these sailors brought home invaluable lessons learned and all brought home more than medals or trophies…memories that will last a lifetime! Summer would not be complete with humor: One woman registered for both morning and afternoon programs. She carefully entered all of the required fields on the electronic registration form. When I saw the birthdate I originally thought she’d filled out the paperwork incorrectly for a child and asked if she would provide the accurate DOB for the young sailor. She quickly replied, “ Oh no, it’s not for a grandchild…it’s for me! Your classes sound like so much fun, I want to register!” Now how do you respond to that, I ask you?! A few of the ESC summer sailing grant recipients at the August CMCS Meeting CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2014 News from Bill and Mary Misenheimer We are back on the boat after returning home for the month of July as Mary's dad had a mild stroke. Barefeet stayed in Annapolis. After flying back Aug. 5, we sailed to Baltimore. Fell's Point is a great anchorage, however dinghy docks are in short supply. There is only one, but it is near a Safeway, Ace Hardware and West Marine. The Inner Harbor has no landing sites for dinghies; you can tie up at a wall for $20.00 for 5 hours. Since our time was short, rather than going further north we cruised the Eastern Shore visiting Oxford and St. Michael's. Oxford has a population of 650 and 1,100 boat slips. St. Michael's is larger and is home to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, with a great representation of the history of the bay and the watermen that are still making their living there.
