A Historical Overview of Miami Valley Golf Club
The first actual opening day of our historic club was June 3, 1919 but our story began way before that:
The land that our club sits on was connected to the Treaty of Greenville, which was signed in 1795 by General
Anthony Wayne and various Indian Chiefs including Little Turtle and Blue Jacket. Some tribes dissented from
this treaty however, and another one had to be signed in 1802 by the Governor of the Northwest Territory,
William Henry Harrison, and other tribes. This signing took place at a big tree on the Club property, which
would now be between #9 and #10 fairways. It can be argued that our club was instrumental in opening up Ohio
and the Western Territories for settlement.
Later, the land on which our club now sits was used for farming, a gypsy camp and a church through the mid
and late 1800’s. It was owned by the Mumma family, the Sellars family and finally Mr. And Mrs. Walter
Kidder, the true founders of our Club.
The Kidders were wealthy and benevolent people, and their strong sense of community drove them to develop a
recreation center. However, the thought of a golf course to benefit the area residents prevailed, and additional
acreage was purchased to bring the total tract to 157 acres.
Deciding to go first class, they contacted the premier golf architect of that time, Mr. Donald Ross.
Unfortunately, Mr. Ross initially refused the Kidders as he was extremely busy with other projects. However,
he was finally persuaded to come to Dayton and stayed with the Kidders while he looked over the property. One
night, Mr. Ross met with Mr. Kidder and eighteen others at the Kidder home, and they became the original
Charter Members of the Miami Valley Golf Club. The course was laid out on a blackboard and later reduced to
paper which now hangs on the wall outside our foyer at the Club.
Mr. Kidder was appointed as the first President of the Club in 1919. The organization became incorporated,
and membership structure was formed. The Kidders deeded the land to the corporation with the proviso that it
always be maintained as a recreational center. By this time, in 1919, the Kidders had spent $310,000.00 to
develop the property, a lofty sum by any means in those times.
Around 1920, the original clubhouse was built where the swimming pool and cart barn are now located, then
expanded to a new facility that opened in 1930. Many additions have taken place to produce what is now the
premier clubhouse facility in the Dayton area with a charm and grace that is hard to reproduce in modern
architecture.
As with any successful private golf club operation, there have been good times and tough times through which
to maneuver. With the help of many dedicated employees and, more importantly, many helpful and dedicated
members, Miami Valley Golf Club has prospered for over 96 years. There is nothing to indicate it ever being
anything other than the great club it is today.
From Gene and Frank Marchi to Larry Herrmann as professionals to Andy Reynolds and Jim Hesselbrock as
superintendents, Miami Valley prospered beyond anyone’s expectations. The members, though, are truly the
reason a club like this succeeds. There was E.P. Randolph who served as President and Manager through the
Depression years, actually loaning the club $25,000 to help it weather the storm. During that same time, he even
built the swimming pool and the club’s first watering system. It was always the members that carried the club
to new heights which included many major events.
The 1931 Western Open was won by Ed Dudley (4 rounds at 4 under par) holding off the great Walter Hagen.
The 1957 PGA Championship, the last held at match play, was won by Lionel Hebert over Dow Finsterwald
2 & 1.
Many exhibitions by great players including, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Tommy Armour, Byron Nelson and
Babe Didrickson Zaharias occurred throughout the years.
The club has held many other major events including State Opens, Amateurs, and The National Left-Handers
Tournament (1954) in which our own member, Ray Stockmyer, reached the Semi-Finals. The club produced
many champions including Bob Servis, Ruth Pickrel, Janet Beardsley, Don Penny, Brian Fogt and Gene
Monnette. All of these great players used their experiences at Miami Valley to propel them to regional and
national championships.
Although many changes have occurred to our club over the years, from golf course to clubhouse, from
employees to membership, one constant has been the caring, committed, and diverse membership at this club.
Whenever you arrive at Miami Valley, whether you are a golfing member, social member or guest, it always
feels like you are coming home.
Grounds Department – 274-6079
Course Superintendent – Jim Hesselbrock , GCSAA
The grounds and golf course at Miami Valley Golf Club are maintained to the highest possible standards. Each
and every maintenance activity performed by the grounds crew is aimed at reaching our high standards.
Occasionally, some maintenance activities can be disruptive to play. These activities are usually planned well in
advance and will be communicated to the membership via the club’s newsletter, signs posted in the golf shop
and on the 1st and 10th tees, as well as through email.
Plant protectants are occasionally applied to the course to protect it from damage caused by insects, weeds or
disease. All materials are applied in the safest way possible by trained and licensed employees. Only EPA
approved materials are applied. Applications are scheduled for Monday mornings when the course is closed but
this schedule can be influenced by weather conditions. Any questions or concerns related to these applications
should be directed to the Course Superintendent at 274-6079 or by email at [email protected].
Our goal is to provide the membership of Miami Valley G.C. with a golf course that they can be proud of and
look forward to playing every day. Please bring any suggestions of how we can better reach our goal to the
attention of Jim Hesselbrock, course superintendent, or any member of the Grounds Committee.

Miami Valley Golf Club Guest Policy
The club is designed for use primarily by the members; however, we encourage you to bring guests to
experience our wonderful golf club. In most cases, it is necessary for a guest to be accompanied by a member
while at the club.
With a few exceptions, a member may bring up to three guests at a time. If you need to sponsor a larger group
at the club, special consideration may be given by the Board of Trustees and/or the Golf Professional. A
member may sponsor a group of up to 19 guests on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons, with arrangements made
through the Golf Shop. Member sponsored groups larger than 20 people will require Board approval.
Upon scheduling your day with your guests, it is helpful to give the golf shop staff sufficient notice so that we
might entertain your guests’ needs properly when they arrive. We want them to feel welcome and at home when
they come to Miami Valley, and letting us know in advance will help us accomplish this.
Your guest can place his or her bag at the bag drop area in the parking lot. They can ring the bell and our staff
will take care of their clubs from that point.
Our staff will clean your guests’ clubs after their round if desired. If your guests are playing here for
consecutive days we can store their clubs in the secure bag storage area.
Junior guests must abide by normal MVGC Junior rules.

Starting procedures:
Other than major events approved by the Board and/or Golf Committees, Miami Valley does not have tee times.
We are proud of this tradition as it permits us to almost always put a member on the golf course and also helps
us find a member a game when he or she would like to play.
We place a great deal of responsibility in the golf shop to help you arrange your golf days, and if we know in
advance of your plans, we can do that more effectively. A call to the golf shop (278-7381) will always help us
service your golfing needs better. We are here for you, it’s your club, and if you ever feel as a member that it
was difficult getting on the golf course, please let us know.
On busy days there will be a starter in the gazebo on the first tee. When all three or four players of a group are
present, they may give their names to the starter for a position on the tee. Again, all players of a group must be
present for the starter to accept your name. Singles or twosomes will be assisted by the starter or the golf shop
staff in finding additional players.
It is our policy to inform the membership of all special events during the golf season. Please use this book and
make yourself aware of the schedule should it conflict with your golf plans. We will also notify the membership
regularly via email of upcoming events. Make sure we have your current email address. There will also be
notices placed throughout the club well in advance of any major event.
In unusually crowded times, with permission from the Professional staff, groups may start from #10 tee. Groups
on the 9th hole will have the right of way on #10 tee. A group starting on #10 will be given a time on #1 tee. The
10th tee will open at approximately 8:00 on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
No more than 4 players will regularly be permitted to play during the golf season, April 1st – September 30th,
unless approved by the Golf Professional. Special events and off – season play may include more than four
players in a group, provided permission from the golf shop has been given.
Social Member Golf Privileges:
During the golf season, social members may play golf twice a month during the appropriate guest times as
stated in the guest policy.
A guest fee will be charged to the member’s account based on the time of year the social member plays. During
the off-season, social member play is unlimited.
A social member’s child is eligible and encouraged to participate in the Junior Golf Program. After the age of
12, a membership must be taken out and fees paid to the club.
Social members may use the practice facility all year for a fee of $100.
Social member greens fees will follow the normal guest fee rates.
Member Sponsored Groups:
Miami Valley Golf Club is an excellent place to hold charitable events, company tournaments or any member
sponsored group. Along with our excellent clubhouse facility, we can provide your event with the best golf
experience in the Dayton area.
The Golf Professional and the Director of Operations work together to provide a schedule of these events that
serve our members’ needs while, at the same time, not adversely affecting our normal play.
Please use your club as much as possible for these functions. As stated before, large groups require Board
approval, and you should contact the Golf Shop for scheduling. See club by-laws or contact the golf shop for
regulations governing these groups.
Important Golf Information……….
Lost and Found:
All lost and found items should be turned in at the front counter of the golf shop. If properly identified, the
items will be immediately returned to the owner. Other items will be placed in our lost and found area.
Messages:
We take messages very seriously in the golf shop. Any non-emergency message will be taken care of and
delivered to the member or guest as soon as possible. Emergency messages, naturally, are handled immediately.
Always notify the golf shop staff when you are at the club so that we can do this part of our job properly.
Lightning Policy:
For the safety of all players, the staff will sound the warning siren when dangerous weather is approaching. At
this time, all players must vacate the golf course immediately and not return until given the all clear by the golf
shop staff. Shelters are located east of #3 green, south of #9 and #17 tees.
Pace of Play:
Very simply, if you familiarize yourself with our starting procedures and keep up with the group in front of you,
there will never be a problem with slow play. Naturally, golf lends itself at times to lost balls etc. and there can
be unusual circumstances that make it hard to keep pace. It is our job in the golf shop to monitor play at all
times, and we feel strongly about this responsibility.
Any round of golf over 4 hours at Miami Valley is too slow and we will work hard with all of our members
to see that time limit met. Please call the Golf Shop, 278-7381 to let us know of any slow play situations. Our
professional staff will do everything possible to help speed up play.
RULES OF PLAY
Handicapping posting in Ohio is done between April 1st and October 31st. During that time, the ball will
be played as it lies. There are times when weather conditions create a situation when winter rules must be
adopted. Any other local rules will be posted and placed on tournament rules sheets prior to play. If and
when these extreme conditions call for winter rules, scores should still be posted.
USGA RULES GOVERN ALL PLAY
HANDICAPS:
Beginning in 2014, we have implemented a “Handicap Committee” which has been put into place to
monitor the frequency of Member’s posting scores. This was set up to help insure the most fair and
equitable events possible.
To understand the handicap system, keep this in mind: A player’s handicap reflects his/her
“CAPABILITY”, rather than their ability.
The USGA uses the best 10 out of the last 20 handicap indexes to compute your handicap. The maximum
handicap index for Men is 36.4 and for Women it is 40.4. A minimum of 5 posted scores is required to compute
a handicap.
All scores will be posted individually by members. It is assumed that the player has attempted to make the best
score possible on each hole played and during each round played. MVGC is a member of the USGA GHIN
handicap system. Any other questions regarding the handicap system can be answered by the golf shop staff.
Equitable stroke control charts are posted in the locker rooms and Golf Shop for your assistance.
The Golf Shop

Golf Club Repair

Professionals, we feel that offering this service is important to the membership at Miami Valley Golf Club.
Some of the repair services we will offer are:




Regrip golf clubs
Reshaft golf clubs, otherwise we will send equipment back to the company for repairs
Length adjustment

Club Fitting
The MVGC Golf Professionals are certified club fitters. Club fitting has come a long way the last few years,
and we are taking it another step forward for our members this year. No set of clubs will be sold without the
proper fitting.
The cost of a fitting session is $75.00, and if you purchase equipment, that fee will be waived. Spend the
time to go through a fitting even if you are not buying clubs at this time. You will learn a lot, and it will
take the guess work out of your next equipment purchase.
