Head Coach
Ryan Schalk
Coach Schalk is starting his second
season as the head coach of the Jayhawks and seventh season with the
program. In the first season under Coach Schalk, the Jayhawks finished
20-14 which was good for a third place finish in the conference as well
as the regional tournament.

Coach Schalk was born and raised in Muskegon, Michigan. He
graduated from Oakridge High School in 2005 where he was on
the basketball team and the baseball team. His baseball career was
highlighted by advancing to the State Semi Finals in 2004. His senior
year he earned various honors including All- Conference, All-District,
and All-Area as an infielder. Ryan was nominated as Oakridge’s Male
Athlete of the year for the Muskegon Sports Hall of Fame as well as
Showcase Athlete of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year at Oakridge
High School. He was also Academic All-Conference in basketball
and graduated 8th in his class. Coach Schalk went on to receive an
Associate’s degree from Muskegon Community College in 2008 and
a Bachelor’s degree in education from Grand Valley State University
in 2015.
Before taking over the head softball coaching position, he served as
an assistant coach for five years with the Jayhawks. In that time, the
program received several honors and awards which was highlighted
by winning the National Championship in 2010. Other honors and
awards during that time period included, the 2010 Division II National
Coaching Staff of the Year, 2012 Division II East Coaching Staff of the
Year, and 2014 MCCAA Western Conference Coach of the Year.
Coach Schalk has also been involved in many aspects of softball
throughout the years. He currently serves as an instructor for Michigan Blue Chip Softball Camps, the Director of Operations
for the Lakeshore Summer Softball Camp, and the Head of Fastpitch Softball at Softball World in Muskegon, MI. In addition to
coaching softball, he served as an Assistant Girls Varsity Basketball Coach at Reeths-Puffer High School and the Head JV Girls
Basketball Coach at Reeths-Puffer High School as well.
When asked about his coaching philosophy, Coach Schalk says, “Our program is all about building a family and learning tough
life lessons through the game of softball. At the end of the day, or five years from now, no one is going to remember the wins
and losses or the things they learned about the game. What they will remember are the life lessons and the great experiences
they had playing alongside their teammates for the two years they had here.”
When asked about the 2015 Jayhawks, Coach Schalk says, “This is one of the most athletic and well-rounded teams we have
ever had. We have several players that can play multiple positions as well as great depth in our pitching staff. We also have a
great balance of power and speed that will help us win many games this year. Our goal is the same as it is every year, which is
to bring another National Championship back to Muskegon Community College.”

Assistant Coach
Kelsey Bandstra Coach Bandstra is starting her
fourth season as an Assistant Coach with the Jayhawks. She was part of
the 2010 National Championship Team, and in 2011 the team finished
as Co-Conference Champions. Her responsibilities are working with
pitchers, but also helps with infielders, outfielders, and hitters. She also
is a pitching instructor and she trains pitchers of all ages. In her spare
time she works for Galloway Custom Homes as a House Manager.
Kelsey graduated from Rogers High School in 2009 where she played
softball and bowled for four years. In her junior year her softball team
finished Runner-up in the State Tournament. She was named First
Team All-Conference for 3 years, and First Team All-State her Junior
and Senior year. Her bowling team also made it to state all 4 years for
team event and individuals. Every year her team finished in the top 8 in
the state and she individually finished in the top 10. After high school
Kelsey played on a Big-League World Series team in 2010. Her team
went on to win the World Series beating the Philippines 14-4.
Kelsey currently attends Davenport University to study Sports
Management and is working on her Bachelor’s Degree.
