GYLR Scholarship List
(Get Your Life Right)
February 10, 2017
Ms. Henderson is your College & Career Center Coordinator, she is located in room 233 and is
available to assist you & answer questions regarding your plans after high school. She is a great
resource for information on colleges, scholarships & careers.
Useful websites:
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ - is a link to the Occupational Outlook Handbook which provides up to date
and valuable information on many career fields and the necessary education required.
http://www.collegeboard.org/ – has a useful college search program.
http://studentaid.ed.gov/ – is a website from the US Dept. of Ed. with information on how to pay
for college and more.
http://www.fastweb.com/ – is one of the most well-known scholarship search websites.
General Information:
IMPORTANT CHANGES TO FAFSA:
The government, after all these years, realized that for the vast majority of us our financial
situation doesn’t fluctuate much from year to year, so for the first time ever you will be able to
complete your FAFSA in the fall!

The application for the 2017-2018 school year (your freshman year of college) will go live Oct. 1st.

To complete this application families are to use their 2015 tax information.
BENEFITS OF THE CHANGE:

The wait time has been eliminated. Starting October 1st you have everything you need to begin
your 2017-2018 FAFSA since you will be using 2015 Tax information.

This change will allow students and their families to have a better idea of the amount of
financial aid that will be offered by the colleges they’ve applied to much earlier, with many
colleges hoping to have award letters in the mail before the winter holiday break.
** You can have your financial information sent to up to 10 colleges but those colleges will not be
able to send you financial aid award letters until you have completed their admissions application.
https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm– this is where you apply for a (Federal Student Aid) FSA ID.
You and the parent that is providing financial information will both need a FSA ID prior to starting
your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Your FSA ID will serve as your official
signature each time you complete your FAFSA and should be kept in a safe place.
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) - this is where you go to fill
out your FAFSA online. Remember you’re applying for aid for your freshman year of college, so
you’re completing the 2017-2018 school year form. (not the 2016-2017 form) using 2015 Tax
information.
College Recruiters come every school year to meet with interested seniors to talk about the programs
and opportunities their schools have to offer. I will keep an updated listing of these
colleges/universities and the date they will be here in the building to meet with students on the wall
outside of room 233 and have upcoming visits announced in the morning announcements. It is up to
you to check and these spots often because I receive new information about colleges coming every
week. In order to meet with a recruiter you must sign up with Ms. Henderson or on the posted
sign-up sheets outside of room 233. You must sign up at least a day in advance. When you sign up
to meet with a recruiter you will receive a pass when the recruiter arrives.

Scholarship Listings (SPECIFIC COLLEGES)
These scholarships are college specific; if you apply and receive a scholarship listed here the money is
only good at that school. If you are interested in a specific college, I encourage you to go to that
school’s website to see what scholarships they have to offer incoming freshmen. If you need help
please come see me.
Searching for Scholarships:
 The first place to begin looking for scholarships is at the colleges you’re most interested in
attending, and preferably ones that you have already applied to. Colleges often offer general
scholarships to students who have a certain GPA/ACT/CLASS RANK. You may find that
you’re eligible for general scholarships but nothing will be awarded to you before you actually
apply and are accepted.
 Once you applied for general scholarships (which for some colleges might just mean completing
the application) the next step is to look for departmental scholarships. These scholarships are
awarded to student based on what they want to study.
 Next I suggest looking for outside scholarships. These scholarships can be used at which ever
college you decided to attend. Most often outside scholarships can be “stacked” or added to
scholarships that you have received from colleges.
 The scholarship search is ongoing. This list will be updated every 2 weeks with information
that comes across my desk, but is in no way intended to be comprehensive, as there is no way
I can list every scholarship available at any given time. I would encourage you to sign up at
reputable scholarship search websites like; www.fastweb.com and
https://www.collegegreenlight.com/
 There are many scholarships that are offered only to college students. So continue to look for
and apply for scholarships while you attend college.
