I am particularly excited by this trip since I am a native of Croatia and lived there until I moved to the United States in 1990. Although I’ve been living in the USA for more than 25 years now, I maintain close ties with Croatia as the rest of my family still lives there, and I try to visit as frequently as I can. I look forward to returning to Croatia this upcoming July with a group of Vassar alumnae/i. I recommend this trip to anyone who is fascinated by stunning art and architecture. Dalmatia is a narrow belt of the east shore of the Adriatic Sea, stretching from the island of Rab in the north to the Bay of Kotor in the south. The hinterland (Dalmatian Zagora) ranges in width from fifty kilometers in the north, to just a few kilometers in the south; it is mostly covered by the rugged Dinaric Mountains. There are 79 islands (and about 500 islets) that run parallel to the coast, the largest (in Dalmatia) being Brač, Pag, and Hvar. The largest Dalmatian city is Split, followed by Zadar, Dubrovnik and Šibenik. The name of the region stems from an Illyrian tribe called the Dalmatae, who lived in the area in classical antiquity. Later it became a Roman province; as a result a Romance culture emerged, along with the now-extinct Dalmatian language, later largely replaced with related Venetian. With the arrival of Croats to the area in the 8th century, who occupied most of the hinterland, Croatian and Romance elements began to intermix in language and the culture. In addition to locations of natural beauty and architectural significance, we will be visiting sites of historical interest that cover a vast range of East-Central European history from ancient Rome through the collapse of Communism and beyond. I look forward to taking part in this unique trip with you. Like most people from Croatia, I love café culture and cherish lively conversations about virtually any subject—especially, if these discussions take place over exquisite food and wine. I hope to meet many of you in July. After earning her degree, Bojana continued her research as a postdoctoral fellow at Weill Cornell, but also began to branch into teaching by holding Visiting Assistant Professorships at Bowdoin College in Maine.
