Sept. 3 - 13, 2016 - St. Matthew Catholic School

8th Grade Honors English
Week of September 3 - 13, 2016
Personification: Messages Sing
Eighth Grade Honors English students identified examples of the literary
device, personification, in their class novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Personification
is giving human attributes to non-human objects. Just as Harper Lee described the
tin foil in a tree as winking at Scout, students practiced personification by writing
their own inspirational messages to classmates.
“Her long hair slept on her strong shoulders.”
“His strong glasses rested over his brow.”
“Her shimmering eyes danced in the sunlight.”
Everyone enjoyed receiving a compliment and learning to personify personal
attributes.
To Kill a Mockingbird: A Mouthful of . . . Gum!
This past week, eighth grade Honors English students read about how Boo
Radley left two pieces of Wrigley’s gum for Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird. Scout
also found two pennies and a wedding ring box in a knot-hole of the tree. To fully
experience the novel, students passed around a ring box with two pennies and
experienced the joy of Wrigley’s gum. What an exciting day in the life of Scout!
