SACRED HEART CHURCH ~ RIVERTON, NEW JERSEY
Understanding Our Catholic Faith
From the Gospel of Matthew we hear these words
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… but store
up treasures in heaven.”
Years ago a Chicago restaurant had specially printed placemats at all its tables. The mats were designed exclusively for
the restaurant. And if you asked the waitress, she would give
you one to take home.
Let me share with you the wording that appeared on these
mats.
“In 1923 an important meeting took place at Chicago’s Edgewater Beach Hotel. Attending the meeting were the following
men:
• The president of the largest steel company
• The president of the largest utility company
• The president of the largest gas company
• The president of the N.Y. Stock Exchange
• The president of the Bank of International Settlement
• The greatest wheat speculator
• The greatest bear on Wall Street
• The head of the greatest monopoly
• A member of President Harding’s cabinet.
That’s a pretty impressive lineup of people. Yet 25 years later...where were those nine insurance giants?
According to the story on the placemat…the president of the
largest steel company, Charles Schwab, died penniless. The
president of the largest utility company, Samuel Insull, died
penniless. The president of the largest gas company, Howard
Hobson, had gone insane. The president of the N. Y. Stock
Exchange, Richard Whitney, went to prison. The bank president, Leon Frazer, died a suicide. The wheat speculator, Arthur Cutter, died penniless. The Wall Street bear, Jesse Livermore, died a suicide. The head of the world’s greatest monopoly, Ivar Krueger, died a suicide. The member of John’s
Harding’s cabinet, Albert Fall, was given a pardon from prison so he could die at home.
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… but store
up treasures in heaven.”
For some people who may think it, Jesus isn’t knocking the
acquisition of wealth. He isn’t knocking private enterprise.
What he is knocking is the foolish idea that some people have
of placing greater importance on laying of material treasures
than on laying up spiritual treasures.
Jesus tells us that what counts when we die is not the wealth
we acquired during life, but the person we became in the process of living. We violate the priority that Jesus speaks of
when we acquire wealth at the expense of becoming dishonest; when we acquire power at the expense of being ruthless;
when we acquire a reputation in the community at the expense
of neglecting our own family.
In short, we violate the priority that Jesus speaks of when we
acquire passing treasures in this life at the expense of losing
eternal treasures in the life to come… my friends, let us pray
that we will see that what counts in this life is not the wealth
we have acquired but the person we became in the process of
living!

eGiving with Faith Direct
This month we are introducing a new and exciting
way for you to support our parish offertory and
second collections: Faith Direct. Faith Direct enables parishioners to make your Church contributions through either direct debit from your checking/savings account or through your credit/debit
card. No more writing checks or searching for envelopes on the way out the door. Now you can apply the convenience of direct debit to your parish
offerings in much the same way as you may now
use it to make your mortgage, car or tuition payments. Faith Direct also offers you personalized
offertory cards to replace your envelopes for the
collection basket.
Please join me in enrolling by responding to the
mailing you will receive or www.faithdirect.net to
enroll securely online. Our parish code is NJ759.
